global prescription medicines to soar
TRANSCRIPT
Global prescription medicines to soar
According to a report by the QuintilesIMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, glob-al spending for Prescription medicines could increase to $1.5 trillion by 2021, an increase of 33%. Historically large numbers of new medicines will emerge from the R&D pipeline in the next five years, the report says we can expect a lower annual rate of growth of 4-7 percent instead of the recent 9 percent because of pricing and market access pressures, lower volume growth in pharmerging markets and greater savings from patent expires.

Lilly predicts high numbers for 2017
Financial predictions for next year show an increase of 5% average annual reve-nue for Lilly.
They are also confident that they will launch at least 20 new products in 10 years, 2014 – 2023.
Lilly believe that the outlook that the company is providing today should be well received and should allow for investor interest to return to what we see as an in-dustry-leading longer-term growth story

More concessions highlight need for change
Price concessions granted by the UK Department of Health (DoH) in November included as many as 18 different ingredients in 29 separate presentations. The rising tide of monthly concessions granted by the Department is just one symptom of the need to overhaul the pharmacy reimbursement system, which has been under scrutiny now for years (Generics bulletin, 3 October 2014, page 9).

Dispensing Fee Rises October 2016 Some GP practices mostly in rural areas provide dispensing services to patients. There are strict rules about who can or can’t be dispensed to by the GP practice; for example the patient must live more than a mile from the nearest pharmacy. The location must be rural in character and the patient must have applied to go on the dis-pensing list. There are approximately 1700 Dispensing doctor sites in the UK. Dispensing doctors receive a fee for each item that they dispense which is calculated by dividing dispensing doctors’ remuneration’ by the number of items expected to be dispensed in the relevant year. The feescale is calculated and agreed by the Technical Steering Committee, run by NHS Digital every year. Feescale changes 2016/17 NHS Digital has released the updated feescale for GMS GPs with effect from 1 October 2016. Key changes are:
the dispensing envelope for 2016/17 has increased from £176.1m to £178.2m
the average volume increase of fees is 0.54 per cent
Full details can be found on the NHS Digital website
NEW DISPENSING FEE SCALE - Effective from 1st October 2016
Please note, the Dispensing Fee is PER ITEM. Some items will attract more than one dispensing fee(see Drug Tariff).
Please note the latest dispensing fee scale can always be found inside the latest Statement of Fees and Allowances which can be found online at www.nhsemployers.org
