Cosmetic Chemicals
Ingredients that are used in manufacturing of cosmetic products are known as cosmetic chemicals. Cosmetic chemicals can
be either synthetic or natural. Cosmetic ingredients are of different types, such as Emollients, Surfactants, Single Use
Additives, Thickening Agents, etc.
Emollients & Moisturizers provide hydration to the skin, particularly to the epidermis. Theterms ‘Emollient’ and ‘Moisturizer’ are often used interchangeably but an Emollient is aspecific ingredient found in moisturizers.
Surfactants are chemicals that are primarily used in shampoos, face washes, etc.Surfactants help reduce the surface tension of a liquid in order to facilitate the cleansingaction. Surfactants can broadly be classified as: Cationic, Anionic, Non-Ionic and Amphoteric.
Single Use Additives are ingredients used majorly in skin care and hair care products.These include deodorants, antiperspirants, hair setting gels and polymers, etc.
Thickening Agents are chemicals used to impart the desired rheology to the cosmeticproduct thereby giving it improved stability and viscosity. Thickening agents are primarilyused in shampoos and moisturizers.
Others: It includes UV Absorbers, Preservatives, Carriers, Pigments and Powders.
