ISA Internships are more than just a placement. It’s a Global Career-Building Experience.

FEATURED STUDENT: JOANNA CHORAZECZEWSKI

Joanna completed an internship in Shanghai, China focused on medical lab work and neurology. As a pre-medical student, she wanted to learn about similarities and differences of science and medicine abroad. Joanna split her internship time between the Shanghai Institute Pasteur and St. Michael Hospital. While at the Institute, she learned about the various lab techniques used in molecular biology. She also interned at a hospital in the neurology department with doctors, nurses, and physical therapists.

She even got to scrub in to a few procedures. Joanna credits her internship with giving her a multitude of skills in the Mandarin culture, language, and traditions, as well as lab techniques and more about Western and Chinese traditional medicine.

“ My future as a scientist and as a doctor was benefited greatly by my experience abroad in China. The knowledge that I gained abroad also helped me diversify myself and have a greater appreciation for cultures different from my own.

Joanna Chorazeczewski Loyola University of Chicago

Why Intern Abroad?

PREPARING FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER

As a college student or recent graduate, it is important to find ways to add value as a future employee. Participating in an international internship experience is one way students can take a big step in differentiating themselves from other college graduates. Fewer students venture abroad for Global Career-Building Experiences. Interning abroad will not only allow students to explore potential career paths, but it will also provide students the opportunity to gain valuable skills in unique ways.

HARD–VS–SOFT SKILLS

Tangible and technical skills, like knowing certain software, mathematics or typing, are known as hard skills. These are often the easiest to recognize and talk about.

Soft skills are personal characteristics that enhance the way a person conducts their job and handles working relationships. Soft skills also fall into a very important category of transferable skills. Transferable skills are skills that are commonly utilized across many fields and positions. Employers value these types of skills, because they are harder to teach than hard skills.

The good news is that many of the skills associated with interning abroad tend be soft and transferable. The five skills listed below are often mentioned as the most desirable by employers and are examples of skills participants can hone while abroad:

Communication – the verbal or written sharing of information to others

Problem Solving – the thought process of coming up with solutions to issues

Adaptability – the ability to adapt to new and changing environments or situations

Planning/Organizational Skills – the ability to complete or plan a project or task in an efficient and planned manner

Initiative – the ability to take charge or action without prompting

5 KEY SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH INTERNING ABROAD

“They say outside of your comfort zone is where you grow the most. Before my internship, the furthest I lived from home was a four hour drive to Athens, OH and I had never been on a plane. My internship proved I was capable of becoming my own person in the real world. Yes, I learned a lot about the sports industry, but more importantly, I learned about being independent, worldly, open and understanding of different cultures and ways of thinking.”

– B. Noyes, Basketball Australia 2004

The ISA Difference

A FOCUS ON YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL

Our focus is to provide programs and services with individual goals in mind, so that students can get more out of their experience.

THE DISCOVERY DIFFERENCE

The Discovery Difference is the framework our team uses to enhance student experiences abroad. We provide students personalized program recommendations based on their goals and interests. Then, throughout the pre-departure process, our Program Managers and Site Specialists will give students individualized attention to ensure that all questions are answered and they are well prepared for their experience. Once abroad, our in-country staff will lead a multi-day Bridging Cultures Orientation Program to ease the transition and accelerate exposure to the host country. Throughout the program, our on-site staff will plan additional excursions and suggest individual activities to engage students in the 5 areas of discovery: personal, academic, cultural, social and professional.

MORE THAN 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

We’ve been around since 1987, and have become a trusted partner to hundreds of U.S. and Canadian universities. We work hard to provide a wide variety of quality programs, strong on-site support and personalized attention.

STAFF WHO UNDERSTAND YOU

Our team, both in the U.S. and abroad, are passionate about study abroad. Our Program Managers and Site Specialists have all been abroad and understand firsthand what students are going through as they prepare for an international experience. Once in country, on-site staff provide guidance and insight to the local culture and are available 24/7.

Students will be supported by a team of engaged on-site coordinators who can assist them with finding the right balance of study and activities to make their internship abroad experience one-of-a-kind.

“I just wanted to say thank you for everything that you did for me and let

you know that my internship was the reason my current job hired me. I

love what I am doing now and am extremely happy that I did

the internship... because it opened my eyes to what

I truly want to do with the rest of my life.”

If participants select this option, in addition to the hours that they will work at the internship site, they will have standard written assignments to complete. Credit is issued as a letter grade.

These assignments will help guide participants throughout their internship experience by helping to establish realistic expectations, and set and track goals so that they are maximizing their experience. The internship site supervisor will also be required to submit an evaluation so that we can track the participant’s performance.

Guaranteed HousingHousing for the Internship Program is included in the program fee and varies by destination. Regardless of the location, ISA Internships puts an emphasis on safe and clean accommodation. Due to the short term nature of the program, housing types and amenities can vary and is typically assigned to participants.

ISA Internships has concentrated on keeping the cost for the Internship Program at a reasonable rate to our students. Participants can be assigned to accommodation in a homestay, shared on-campus accommodation, student apartments or hostels. Participants may be housed in different accommodation based on the location of their internship placement and commute times.

Specific details about the program accommodation and public transportation routes will be provided approximately 3-4 weeks prior to departure and can be found in the participant’s online account. Please note that it is typically not an option to not utilize the arranged program accommodation, as housing is included in the program fee.

DISCOVERYCOMPASS

Our in-country resident staff suggests recommended self-led activities for students throughout the time abroad. Activities are optional and designed to explore the five key areas of discovery: academic, social, personal, cultural, and professional. These are not just visits to tourist attractions. For instance, these activities include things like networking opportunities, local festivals, gallery openings, and other similar events that you can’t find in a travel book but that will truly enhance your experience.

SAMPLE SELF-LED DISCOVERY ACTIVITIES

The Great Sydney Race Scavenger Hunt Sydney, Australia In order to explore local landmarks and to mingle with locals, interns are challenged to a scavenger hunt which takes them all over the city.

Career Exposition Wellington, New ZealandInterns in Wellington attend the main graduate recruitment fair for a local university and network with local businesses to see the possibilities that await them when they graduate.

Professional Networking Hong Kong, Shanghai, China and SingaporeInterns attend a professional networking event or a dinner with a guest speaker, such as an industry leader, successful entrepreneur, or business manager. Interns are able to get an inside perspective about business in China and Hong Kong, as well as Asia as a whole.

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES

Our in-country staff will provide students with a robust calendar of events. Students have the option to take part in these events during their free time. Staff-led and independent activities will reflect the five dimensions of the Discovery Compass. Students’ own exploration of the culture, the academics, the people, and themselves is what will truly make their experience unique. ISA's in-country staff will also provide students with advice and recommendations for their continued, self-directed pursuit of Discovery.

One of the first adventures that students will experience in their new country is the Bridging Cultures Program. The Bridging Cultures Program aims to ease students’ transition to their study abroad experience and accelerate their exposure to their new host country.

The Bridging Cultures Program is ISA’s multi-day, in-country study abroad orientation program that blends adventure, lecture, and culture into an informative and fun introduction to the student’s new host country. This program is an introduction to the ISA study abroad experience and is designed specifically for semester and academic year abroad students. It is included in the program fees.

THE PROGRAM'S LOCATION VARIES AS DOES DURATION AND FOCUS, BUT EACH BRIDGING CULTURES PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO:

• Help speed up the socialization process by helping them to meet other students who are interning abroad in the same country at the same time.

• Guide each student through a goal-setting activity to encourage them to reflect on their expectations for their study abroad experience.

• Introduce students to the local culture through a variety of activities including the learning the key words and phrases in the local language, tasting traditional food, understanding traditions, and more.

• Visit culturally relevant destinations in the program locations such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

• Prepare students for some of the relevant health and safety issues in their host country.

• Inform students of the cultural and professional differences they’ll experience.

• Start students on the road to discovery by providing them with a fun and memorable adventure at the beginning of their study abroad experience.

Now that you have decided to intern abroad with ISA...

TIPS FOR A STANDOUT APPLICATION:

The actual internship is not the only learning process of the internship program. The initial step of preparing the applications also gives you exposure and experience in preparing professional-looking documents for future career opportunities.

HELPFUL HINTS:

• Watch out for spelling and grammatical errors! Be thoughtful with your essay questions.

• Do you have relevant education and/or experience for your desired internship?

• Be honest about your skill level.

RESUME:

Your resume is also a key element in the application process. It is important that you show your possible internship host what relevant education, interests and experience you have to support your desire to intern in the field that you have chosen. Be sure to indicate your major and minor study areas.

COVER LETTER:

Your cover letter is probably the most important document you will provide with your internship application. Your cover letter should not be geared toward a specific internship site or location, but rather should be general and focused on the specific field in which you are interested and on the various types of learning outcome you would like to achieve. Also, let the reader know why you want to intern abroad. We suggest that you keep your location options open to all destinations. Each of these amazing destinations offer high quality internship placements, fascinating cultural experiences and the change to learn relevant and transferable skills and knowledge.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION:

Your letter of recommendation should be from professors, academic advisors, previous/current employers or a combination of the three. The most professional presentation is to have the letters typed on university or company letterhead.
