Appendix

Definitions in the Report Definitions of Delays

On-time: A flight is considered on-time if it takes off (with the wheels off the ground) less than 30 minutes after the scheduled

departure time.

Late: A flight is classified as late if it takes off 30-45 minutes after the scheduled departure time.

Very Late: A flight is classified as very late if it takes off 45-60 minutes after the scheduled departure time.

Excessively Late: A flight is classified as excessively late if it takes off 60 minutes after the scheduled departure time.

Sample Size, Cancellations and Flight Completions

Sample Size: Sample size data is a count of the number of flights for which VariFlight was able to capture actual departure,

arrival or cancellation data.

On-time & Delay Calculations: The calculation of on-time and delayed flight percentages include only those flights that were

completed and for which VariFlight was able to collect final status. Cancelled flights are not included in the delay calculations by

subtracting the number of cancellations from Sample Size before calculating on-time percentage.

Cancellation: The number of cancelled flights is divided by the Sample Size

Airport Selection Criteria and Rank

Among the world’s major 200 airports with the largest number of scheduled flights,

typically 80% coverage is needed for an airport to be included in the analysis

(However, in Asia and Europe the coverage threshold was set at 70% to include a

couple of key airports in the analysis). VariFlight has selected 156 major airports to

be ranked by their on-time departures. It is worth noting that 105 out of the 156

airports have a coverage of over 90%.
