Sohio is proud to be doing business in Lima. Ohio and is proud to have been acorporate citizen of this area for 100 years.

Our Refinery has changed dramatically since September 12.1886. when construction began on our first crude "stills'" Although the refinery was originally built totake advantage of the oil fields that had been found in this area. over the years ourfacility has been expanded and improved many times and now processes crude oilfrom throughout the world.

The Lima area has been good to us. It has been a good place to do business and ithas provided us with a capable and productive workforce. On the occasion of ourCentennial we would like to express our appreciation to our present and pastemployees for their many contributions to our Company.

This calendar has been assembled to remind us of our past. Our first century inLima. Ohio. has been a good one. We look forward to continuing to playa role in theLima area during our next 100 years.

With the demand for automotive productsincreasing, Lima Refinery welcomed expan·sion in the late 1940's. Start up of the FluidCatalytic Cracker utilized advancingcatalyst technology to convert gas oils tomotor gasoline. Installation of the CrudeCoker increased crude capacity and offereda process to thermally crack heavy oil tolighter, more valuable gasoline products.Construction of the Lube Plant suppliedfacilities to produce motor grade oils andlubricants to improve engine performance.Addition of these refining units provided, and still provides, Lima Refinery with theflexibility to upgrade its product slate tomeel changing market demands.

Start up of the Lima Integrated Unit (L1U) inearly 1970 signaled the successful completion of a $75 million refinery expansion.Crude processing capacity was increasedfrom 60,000 to 178,000 barrels per day. Theexpansion included new process units foratmospheric and vacuum distillation ofcrude oil, hydrotrealing of naphtha, catalytic reforming of naphtha, gas oilhydrocracking, recovery and fractionationof light hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfideremoval from fuel gas and LPG, jet fueltreating, propylene fractionation, anddistillate fuel and gasoline blending. Even16 years later in 1986, L1U continues torepresent some of the latest in refiningtechnology anywhere in the world.

Sohio's Lima Refinery is particularly con·scious of environmental concerns, bothbecause of its integration in the Lima community and because of its commitment toSohio's longstanding corporate policy onenvironmental compliance. In recent yearsLima Refinery has invested over $20 millionon control equipment such as the SulfurRecovery Unit (1975), ElectrostaticPrecipitator (1978), API Separator Cover(1981), tankage internal floating roofs (1982),Advanced Waste Water Treatment Plant(1983), storm water impounding (1983) andothers. These environmental improvementsillustrate Sohlo's attention to the quality oflife in Lima.

Schio, Lima Refinery and Lima Refinery employees have been active supporters of the United Way and other community projects and improvements for many years. Lima Refineryhas been an active corporate citizen of Lima for a century now and during that time has supported community, cultural and social programs in the area. The refinery considers Lima areacitizens its greatest resource and strives to replenish the vitality of the community which embraces Sohio's operation and Sohio's people by continually caring for and enriching life forall in the Lima area.

In 1970, Lima installed its first on-linecomputer to control the knockengines for gasoline blending_ By1980, a minicomputer at L1U wasmaking control adjustments 10 Ihreefractionators_ The L1U installationwas so successful that in 1983, a32-bit super minicomputer replacedthe smaller minicomputer. Today theOptrol 7000 performs supervisorycontrol of 35 control loops, with yearly savings of millions of dollarsresulting from better energy and product composition control. More conIrol loops are still in the developmentstage. In addition, the Optrol nowreaches into almost all of the refinery, providing data acquisition and process monitoring capabilities as partof the Management InformationSystem. Computer systems are nowreaching into all phases of refineryoperations, from the microprocessors that control chromalOgraphs, to computer-aided engineering, maintenance planning, warehouse invenlory, and quality controllaboratory results reporting.

The Lima Aromatics facility, the newestrefinery operating unit, was completed inthe fall of 1984 at a cost of $140 million. Theunit is designed to produce more than 7500barrels per day of chemical-grade benzeneby extraction from light reformate and thermal hydrodecalkylalion of toluene. This product is marketed through Sohio ChemicalCompany. Included in the new facility is anIsomerization unit which upgrades theoctane 01 various gasoline blending com·ponents. The Isomerization process isbecoming increasingly important to refinersas the allowable concentration in gasolineof tetraethyl lead, a common octaneenhancer, is bei:lg reduced by the federalgovernment. The Aromatics facilityrepresents yet another example of Sohio'scommitment to the Lima economic scene.
