40 LESSONS ON THE MASS Lesson 20 - Prayer of the Faithful

P ope Benedict XVI observed that we are “at our most attentive in prayer

of petition and prayer of thanksgiving.” The Prayer of the Faithful follows the homily, and while they are not mandatory at every Mass, it is a wonderful opportunity to seek God’s

mercy and help. The priest introduces and closes the Prayer of the Faithful, while the reader announces the various intentions and invites the assembly to pray by saying, “We pray to the Lord”, and the people respond, “Lord, hear our prayer.” There is an order to the petitions, starting with universal needs of the Church and moving down to local needs, often mentioning by name the sick and recently deceased in the parish.

F ather Guy DesRochers of St. Anne de Beaupré will

host a Eucharistic Celebration with a candlelight procession in veneration of St. Anne’s Relic at St. Joseph’s Church on Wednesday, May 17, 2018 at 7 p.m. St. Anne’s Devotions are primarily a call to prayer. They are conducted in the same manner as those at St. Anne de Beaupré. It is a great opportunity for the elderly, the handicapped and others who cannot come to the Shrine, to experience a ‘Mini Pilgrimage’ in their area. The purpose of St. Anne’s Devotions aims at bringing Christ’s message of faith and comfort to the people who attend this prayerful celebration. It consists of the Eucharistic Sacrifice, a Homily, a Candlelight procession and the Veneration of a first class Relic of St. Anne.

A conference for everyone…Celebrate is a dynamic Catholic faith-filled

weekend for individuals or the whole family. There is vibrant worship, sound Catholic teaching, and fellowship in a joy-filled atmosphere. Bishop Peter Hundt, Bishop of the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador, will be celebrating the final Sunday Mass. For more information please contact the Parish Office.

THE EASTER SEASON

T he Easter season is celebrated during the seven weeks between Easter and Pentecost. Called “the Great Sunday” by Saint Athanasius, these fifty days of Easter are celebrated as one great Feast Day. These days,

above all others, are the days for the singing of the Alleluia and so, throughout the entire Easter season, Christians sing the triumphant “Alleluia” as they continue to rejoice in the hope of the resurrection.

******************************************** APRIL 30 - MEMORIAL OF SAINT MARIE DE L’ INCARNATION, RELIGIOUS: Marie was born in Tours, France, in 1599. As a young woman, she received revelations concerning the Incarnation, the Sacred Heart, and the Blessed Trinity. After seeking spiritual direction, she decided to enter the Ursuline monastery in Tours. Encouraged by a dream, Marie set sail with two other Ursulines and arrived in Quebec City in 1639. She composed catechisms in Huron and Algonquin. Marie died in Quebec on April 30, 1672, was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 22, 1980, and was canonized by Pope Francis on April 2, 2014. She was the first missionary woman to the “New World”.

MAY 1 - INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ DAY: Today, International Workers’ Day is celebrated in many countries. This is a day to recognize the value of human work, to defend the dignity of working people, to encourage all to be responsible in their work, and to celebrate the role that human work has in God’s plan for creation.

MAY 2 - MEMORIAL OF SAINT ATHANASIUS, BISHOP, DOCTOR: St. Athanasius was born in Alexandria, Egypt, towards the end of the third century. As a deacon, he was chosen by his Bishop (Saint Alexander) to go with him to the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. There Athanasius was recognized as the foremost defender of the Church’s Faith, especially in the battle against Arianism, a heresy that denied Christ’s divinity. He succeeded Alexander as Bishop of Alexandria and was esteemed by everyone “as a virtuous, holy man, an ascetic, a true bishop”. For almost fifty years he bore the whole brunt of the Arian assault, often virtually alone and undefended. Though he did not die a martyr, his life was martyrdom in the truest sense. Preserved by Divine Providence through a lifetime of trial and danger, the stormy life of Saint Athanasius closed in peace on May 2, 373.

MAY 3 - FEAST OF SAINT PHILIP AND SAINT JAMES, APOSTLES: Philip and James were apostles of Jesus. Saint John’s Gospel records several conversations between Jesus and Philip which show that the latter was present throughout the Lord’s public ministry. James, the son of Alphaeus, wrote the Letter of James which is part of the New Testament and he is often referred to as James the Less because he was younger than the other apostle James. Historians write that he was a Christian of high repute who died a martyr’s death by stoning about the year 62.

On April 19th, Father Hearn

celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation

with fifteen children from our parish. Please

continue to pray for the children and their

families as they prepare to receive

First Holy Communion.

CATECHESIS The next Catechesis session will take place on

Thursday, May 3rd at 6 pm.
