Men in Glenmore Park

www.glenmoregazette.com.au September 2011 3

Rev John Lavender

It’s kind of sad that quite often there are some men out there who think that this “Jesus stuff” is not for them. Perhaps it is because of a bad experience or perhaps it is because of media stereo types. Perhaps it might even be because in our masculine pride we think that we’re strong enough & tough enough to get through life on our own. It is interesting though that when we actually take a good look at Jesus; we meet a man for all occasions. Physically, mental-ly, emotionally, Jesus was someone who you just had to look up to. Jesus was a man full of compassion & care. He stood up for the weak & oppressed. He opposed injustice & hypoc-risy. Indeed, Jesus is a great example & encouragement for men of every age to look to, learn from & follow.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church it is wonderfully en-couraging to see that so many men have discovered these truths about Jesus for themselves. It is great that on Sun-days & at other times throughout the week that there are just as many men as women meeting & getting involved in our Church. This is not what the TV shows & media would have you believe! Men in our Church have discovered for them-selves that Jesus is a “Real” man; a real man worthy of fol-lowing & trusting.

With this mind, at our Church we have a number of ac-tivities & events to encourage & support us as men. The “Grumpy Old Men’s Group” is a great group of older, more “mature” guys who regularly get together to discover what the Bible has to say to men – it really is fantastic to see these guys having great fun together as well as supporting & encouraging one another through all sorts of trials & disap-pointments in life. We also have regular Men’s Dinners, with quality speakers, who help guys, think through some of the big issues in life. Our last dinner helped us think through is-sues surrounding depression – it was a great night! Our next dinner, coming up at 7pm on Thursday 22nd September will have Jim & Lesley Ramsey coming to speak to us on “What men need to know about women”. Again, this will be a night not to be missed! Give me a call to book your spot or just to find out more.

Community benefits from hall upgrade

Mothers’ groups; volunteers; com-munity groups and vital community services as well as party and event hosts in Regentville and surrounding suburbs now have a more contempo-rary community hall to use.

Penrith City Council has revamped Regentville Hall with the hall commit-tee with grants from the NSW State Government’s Community Builders program and NSW Aged and Disabil-ity Services.

The revamp includes a new com-mercial kitchen, repainting of the hall and resealing of the timber floor, new hot water units, solar electricity, rain-water tanks, new energy efficient light-ing and upgrading of toilets and elec-trical switchboard.

Penrith City Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said Council particularly wanted to thank the Nepean Food Service for pursuing State Govern-ment funding for the hall and for the food service.

“The Nepean Food Service was successful in obtaining grant funding for the hall upgrades and their food service,” Councillor Aitken said.

“The Nepean Food Service plays a vital role in our community by pro-viding meals, a friendly face and an

occasional day out for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

“Council appreciates the role the service plays each week in enabling 200 or so Penrith City residents to stay in their own homes and main-tain a level of independence and dignity.

“Their good work in obtaining this funding means that they can contin-ue to provide the service from within a modern facility while also ensuring that the wider community also ben-efits from having a contemporary hall to use.”

Penrith City Council provides more than 30 community halls and centres across the City, which are available for a small hire cost for your next func-tion, meeting or celebration.

For more information or to book events call 4732 8021 or visit www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au.

Hedging cuts costs and deters graffitists

Six kilometres of hedging has been installed by Penrith City Council along selected fence lines in the City to help prevent graffiti and make mowing easier.

Completed over a two week period last month, the photinia hedges will

improve the amenity of open space and reduce the need for Council to mow grass along fence lines while protecting the fences from graffiti attacks.

Hedging or greenscreening, a proven crime prevention measure through environmental design, has been successful across Penrith City. Suburbs where hedges have recently been installed include Glenmore Park and North Cranebrook.

Penrith City Deputy Mayor Jim Ait-ken OAM said: “We’re killing two birds with one stone – we’re cutting costs we’d otherwise be spending on mow-ing grass and removing graffiti. Plus, the hedges are attractive, softening the hard lines of fences and walls, as their new growth is a striking red colour.”

A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she

could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, “Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late! Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late!” While she was running and pray-ing, she tripped on a curb and fell, get-ting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once again began to pray, “Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late...But please don’t shove me either!”The Bible is a confusing book for many people. Let me try and make it easier for you. The word Bible is not really adequate to describe it. It re-ally should be called The Holy Bible because Bible comes from the Greek word biblia meaning “books” and it contains all the holy books that tell us about God. It is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Tes-

tament. The word Testament means “agreement” so the two testaments are the two distinct agreements that God has made with humanity. One prior to Jesus (Old Testament) and the other from Jesus until eternity (the New Testament). The word Testament can also be interchanged with the word Covenant. The Holy Bible records the numerous covenants, or agreements that God has made with humanity throughout history. In the Old Testament, there covenants were usually signed with the blood of some sacrificed animal, usually a sheep or ox. But in the New Testament it is Jesus who offers His own Blood on the Cross. The final agreement or covenant God has made which is unchangeable is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They record the words that Jesus used at the Last Supper when He said, after offering the apostles the chalice “the cup contains the new tes-tament in my blood.” (Luke 20:22). The blood seals the covenant—and the cup is the symbol of that seal. It is ‘the everlasting cov-enant’ (Hebrews 13:20). Each week at

Mass we fulfill our part of the covenant or agreement by doing as Jesus com-manded us “Do this in memory of Me”. Our sharing in the Eucharist is our way of expressing our desire to be in-cluded in the Covenant with God. The way we participate in the Eucha-rist is also expressing our desire to have Eternal Life. As Jesus said, “Whoever eats my Body and drinks my Blood will live forever and I will raise them up on the last day” (John 6:54). The whole of the Old Testament is pointing towards this point. The of-fering of blood sacrifices were all to be replaced by the final sacrifice which Jesus offered on Mt Calvary. We are not able to be there on Good Friday but we are able, at Mass each week, to be there with Jesus in His great act of offering Himself to God the Fa-ther. You can participate in fulfilling your part of the covenant by joining the Catholic Community at one of our Masses: 6.30pm Saturday, 7.30am or 9am Sunday.

Penrith Anglican College opens the

“Lighthouse Theatre”Federal Member for Lindsay, David

Bradbury, attended the official opening of the "Lighthouse Theatre" at Penrith Anglican Col-lege on Friday 19th August, 2011. Funding received under the Building the Edu-cation Revolution (BER) initiative contributed to the construction of this new facility.

The new theatre has been the venue for a number of recent school and community productions and was also the venue for today’s official

opening. Penrith Anglican College re-

ceived $3,000,000 under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century compo-nent of the BER which went towards

the construction of the theatre. An addi-tional $200,000 was received under the National School Pride component, for school refurbishments.

The official opening featured per-formances by the school choir and in-fant students on their new stage. Mr Bradbury was pleased to see the thea-tre being utilised by the talented staff and students at the College.

“The Lighthouse Theatre is a fan-tastic addition to Penrith Anglican Col-lege.” Mr Bradbury said.

“The Lighthouse Theatre is a first class facility that provides a range of educational opportunities for staff and students, particularly in the performing arts and public speaking.”

Headmaster of the College, Mr Barry Roots, said he has been hum-bled by the efforts of everyone who contributed to the construction of this amazing venue.

The school also used its BER funding to refurbish the school play-grounds and construct shade struc-tures and sporting facilities at the school.

Coochie Takes The Hard Work Out Of Lawns

Coochie HydroGreen Lawn Care Services offers a lawn care program that aims to keep lawns green and healthy all year round. We treat all types of lawns but we do not mow lawns.

A lawn needs attention on a regular basis to keep it strong, healthy and green. It requires regular nutrition, disease, weed and lawn pest control at different stages throughout the seasonal year. With our regular scheduled visits, six times a year, we take the hassle out of looking after your lawn. You no longer need to purchase, store and spend time applying complicated products - just leave it to Coochie. By applying the correct balance of nutrients through liquid fertilising, organic soil conditioning, wetting agents, and safe lawn pest and weed control, Coochie can ensure your lawn is kept green and healthy. Or, you may prefer just a ‘one-off’ visit, which consists of a fertiliser and weed treatment only.

Ongoing follow-ups and technical advice is part of our service. Water saving benefits through the use of soil wet-ting agents ensures that lawns do not require as much water to stay healthy. The Coochie service is also ideal for businesses, including real estates, landscapers, prop-

erty developers, motels, councils and childcare centres, to name a few.

If you are interested in knowing more about our services and how we may be able to help you care for your lawn, please feel free to contact your local Coochie Owner Man-ager – Fabian Gemin on 0401701322 for a free 10-point lawn inspection and advice, or Freecall 1800 245 955.

Visit your local bush fire brigade on Open Day

24 September 2011

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) state-wide Open Day will be held on Saturday 24th September 2011.

Open Day provides an oppor-tunity to visit your local brigade and find out more about the NSW

RFS and the diversity of roles both on and off the fire ground. It is also a chance to meet your local RFS bri-gade who is a valuable part of your community.

NSW RFS Open Day kicks off Bush Fire Aware-ness Week, which runs from Saturday 24th September through to Saturday 1st October. This also coincides with the commencement of the statutory Bush Fire Dan-ger period.

Details of brigades participating in Open Day will be publicised in the near future.

Further information about the services provided by the NSW RFS is available on www.rfs.nsw.gov.au. To learn how to protect your family, protect your life and preparing your home, please refer to the Bush Fire Sur-vival Plan or call 1800 NSW RFS (1800 679 737).

Foster Care Week 2011

Barnardos Temporary Family Care Program provides short term care to children in the Penrith, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountain LGAs. Temporary Family Care is a program that helps and supports families and kinship car-ers through respite and short-term fos-ter care. Care for children is provided by trained carers in their homes.

Respite care is planned care which provides children and their families with a break and support once weekend a month. Respite care is usually provided to fami-lies for 6 – 12 months with the children going to the same carer family each month.

Crisis care means that children stay with a foster carer for a period of time which depending on circumstances can be for a week or two, a month or two or up to one year. At the end of a Crisis Care placement, the child may return to their birth family, extended family, or be placed in long term care.

Joanne and Rob with their three children Josh, Liam and Mikayla are one family who provide foster care for children in the Barnardos Tempo-rary Family Care Program in Penrith area.

Jo is a school teacher and Rob is a shift worker.

Jo and Rob have been foster car-ers since 2009 and in that time have cared for 4 children at different times. Jo and Rob initially did respite care and

now provide care for children in crisis care. They have a spare bedroom in their home that is used by the foster children while they stay with them.

Jo and Robert became foster carers as they were motivated to help others especially children and felt they had the time and space in their lives for oth-er children.

Currently Jo and Robert have a young boy James* aged 9 in crisis care with their family. Prior to com-

ing into foster care James had very poor health and had multiple emergency hos-pital admissions. His poor health and regular hos-pital admissions also meant that his schooling and other parts of his life suffered. Since coming into care with

the Barnardos Temporary Family Care and staying with Jo and Rob, James’s health has improved significantly and he has not had one admission to hospi-tal (although he attends the hospital as an outpatient as required).

Also with the support of Jo and Rob, James has made significant gains in his learning and education as he can now attend school regularly and get additional help from a tutor. He is also enjoying playing sports and likes to go out weekends with his foster family.

Jo and Rob will continue to have James stay with them until a perma-nent family can be found for him.

Jo has said that she enjoys doing foster care for the Barnardos Tempo-rary Family Care Program. “Being a foster carer is challenging sometimes but as a foster carer I feel very support-ed by the Barnardos caseworkers.”

In regards to doing the care and what she finds the most satisfying about doing foster care Jo stated “I get a long out of seeing the children in my care grow and meet their potential but also as a mother it has been great see-ing my own children have the oppor-tunity to show the caring side of them-selves. What we get out of doing fos-ter care as a family far exceeds what I ever thought we would. It’s great.”

Foster Care Week is an annual event which has been running in NSW since 1990. Coordinated by ACWA with the support of non-government foster care agencies and other part-ners, Foster Care Week aims to cel-ebrate and acknowledge the work of NSW's foster carers. (reference - http://www.acwa.asn.au/Foster_Care_Week11.html)

Foster care week is 11 – 17 Sep-tember 2011 and each year to cel-ebrate Barnardos Temporary Family Care program holds an annual celebra-tory dinner for all its carer families and children in care. It is a great event where carers enjoy a chance to social-ise and catch up with each other.

If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a foster carer with the Barnardos Temporary Family Care Program, Penrith please phone the TFC Team on 4729 1211 during business hours.

ewaste drop off day at Jamison Park on Saturday September 10th from 9 am to 3.30pm.

Orchard Hills Vet hosted the RSP-CA Cupcake Day on Monday 15th Au-gust 2011.

Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised $950.00 for the RSPCA with your help.

Belinda, Carly and Eden cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious pep-permint slice, cupcakes, cookies, ba-nana cake. The Pupcakes were made from the Hills wd science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony and Bella loved eating the Pupcakes!

The RSPCA also provided mer-chandise to be sold on the Cupcake Day. The tea towels, aprons, cat dan-glers, lip balms and soft dog toys were all cute and were sold out quickly.

Thanks again for supporting a great cause!

The RSPCAThe RSPCA is the Royal Society

for the Prevention of Cruelty to Ani-mals, a non-profit, community based

charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.

The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through ani-mal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, dona-tions, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate sup-

port, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work.

Red Dog the MovieOn Saturday 8th August, we were

honoured to be invited to attend a spe-cial Meet and Greet with the star of the new “Red Dog” Movie, Koko the Kelpie at David Darcy’s Photo Gallery in Katoomba! After the honour and thrill of meeting the wonderful Koko we were invited up to Mt Vic Flicks in Mount Victoria to see a premiere viewing of the film. It was a wonderful heartwarming true story of charismatic kelpie who roamed the Western Aus-tralian Outback in the 1970’s, hitch-ing rides, adopting people and uniting communities along the way. We rec-

ommend anyone to see it! The movie makes you want to go home and hug your own dog!
