We love meeting you all & it is always great to have con-versations with you, catching up with old friends & getting to know others we haven’t met before. We have also had some great conversations with people wanting to find out more about Jesus. We’ll back at the shops on Saturday 1st May, so come & say hello & enjoy a coffee while listening to some music. You might even like to get your face painted! Sustainability Gardens at

Glenmore Park highRecent rains have filled the two

rainwater tanks to capacity that exist on Glenmore Park High School’s Sus-tainability Gardens. The tanks were incorporated into the school’s science facilities as a result of a successful ap-plication to the Federal Government’s Schools Rainwater Tank Scheme.

To further the sustainability of this project, the school composts organic material such as kitchen scraps and lawn clippings. Once considered as waste, these materials are now con-sidered to be a valuable resource for the vegetable gardens.

Students are closely involved with the maintenance of the gardens which also include the keeping of animals including chickens and sheep. It is in-tended that the Sustainability Gardens will be an important part of the teach-ing of Agriculture as from 2011.

Kalinda Jade StudiosKalinda Jade Studios based in

Glenmore Park is owned and run by

Kalinda Jade and Bryan Ramsaroop who are also the teachers at this ever-growing music studio. They teach a variety of instruments and subjects for beginner, intermediate and ad-vanced students and specialise in Higher School Certificate and School Certificate tuition. They also welcome adult students and have quite a vari-ety of adult students wanting to either start to learn music or wanting to re-connect with their instrument. They are proud of the learning environment they have created and are committed to being one of the leading music ed-ucation studios in Western Sydney.

When a student enrolls for HSC and School Certificate Tuition; not only does a HSC or SC student re-ceive tuition in their instrument, they also have a completely tailored sylla-bus specific to their school and topics of study.

You also have the benefit of know-ing that they have been tutoring stu-dents attending many of the schools within the Penrith-Blacktown region over a course of many years. As a result, chances are, we have not only built a relationship with your schools and their teachers but they also know the class outlines. Think of the benefit

of having a tutor that knows exactly what the topics and assignments will be over the course of the two years.

There are over 20 topics for study in music. As a result every teacher in every school chooses different topics from the topic list. Therefore they cre-ate individual text books that focus on the topics of study for each student. It is due to their commitment to each students learning and individually designed syllabus that we have es-tablished a 92 (BAND 6) average for HSC Marks.

All of the students at Kalinda Jade Studios receive many perks such as: access to a fully equipped record-ing studio and an extensive library of CDs, DVDs, Sheet Music, and photo-copying, online learning – each stu-dent is set up on ‘Skype’ allowing us to have lessons over the internet, via web cam (this allows students to still have their lessons if they are ill or if they need help with homework in be-tween lessons), and much more. At Kalinda Jade Studios you receive the most comprehensive, personalised tuition available. Visit kalindajades-tudios.com.au to find out more about their unique programs.

Padre Pio ParishCops came around to my house to-

day & told me that my dog was chasing some kid on a bike. I told them it can’t be my dog. She doesn’t own a bike.

I am often accused of things I didn’t do, but I don’t get upset. I know I will never be crucified or suffer the way Jesus did for what He didn’t do.

This month we celebrate the most important week in our Christian calen-dar. It is called “Holy Week” because it is full of religious ceremonies which recall the Event that gives us all our hope: The death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ! It begins on a day we call Palm Sunday because we re-member the day Jesus rode into Jeru-salem on a donkey and the people all greeted Him, waving palm branches like a football team that had just won the grand final. That same crowd who yelled and cheered calling our “Hosanna to the Son of David” were later in the same week screaming for His blood, “Crucify Him!” It is a scary thing about human nature that we can be moved by a crowd to do things we would never dream of doing on our own. Do you remember at the end of 2005 how a crowd of hooligans were motivated by a crowd to attack any-one who looked like they were from another country? That crowd violence was later universally condemned and even some of those who were doing the attacking later couldn’t understand what grabbed them. This same ‘crowd mentality’ which can often do damage, is also employed for good. Imagine the happiness you feel at a concert

listening to someone performing. It is different from when you listen to their CDs. When you are with a crowd, the atmosphere can be electric. It can be over-powering. It can make you feel great too. This is why we gather to-gether to worship and praise our God. A lot of people tell me, “I don’t need to go to church to pray. I just pray in my room”. But the ambiance of a church and being with a crowd of people all singing, worshipping and praying is much more uplifting than when we pray alone. You are warmly welcomed to join us at Padre Pio Parish to cel-ebrate our Holy Week.

The Gift of LifeAt birth, Kyla Devine was diag-

nosed with a condition named Biliary Atresia, a condition where the liver doesn’t function well and cannot get rid of bile from the body.

Early in 2008 Kyla became very, very sick and was in dire need of a liver transplant. A very generous family agreed to donate their loved one’s organs. Not only did their loved one’s donation save her life, but saved several other lives too through their donation. This is a very special family and Kyla and her family will be forever grateful for what they gave her.

Because of their ‘gift of life’

Kyla now has a chance to fulfill her many dreams. One of Kyla’s dreams is to increase the number of organ donors in Australia, because our num-bers are very small, too small to cov-er the number of people waiting for a transplant. And without a transplant, a lot of these people, many of whom are children, will die.

This story isn’t meant to be a sad tale; rather to show the positive out-comes that can come from organ do-nation. Kyla is now happy, playful and very full of life (as you can see), she is a big sister too to baby brother Kobi.

Thanks to the generosity of a do-nor family Kyla was given a second chance, something that she will always cherish.

To become an organ donor:1. Register online with Medicare to

become an organ donor2. Discuss organ donation with

your family, because at the end of the day it is their decision whether to do-nate your organs

healthy Dining Tips by Essentials Health & Fitness

Dining out, for many, is often related to a celebration or events and we may use several “excuses” to indulge. For example, “It’s a celebration after all”, or “We don’t go out that often”, or “I’m paying lots of money and I’m going to eat every morsel of food”, or “I always choose healthy foods”, or “I didn’t eat

all day because I didn’t want to ruin my appetite”; and, this one I love…” It’s one price and ALL YOU CAN EAT”.

You may even have your own favourite excuse … like “I was brought up to eat

everything on my plate”. Whether you are dining in or out,

food should always be enjoyed and even savoured. So take your time and eat slowly, really taste the flavours, the spices, and enjoy the textures of the in-dividual dishes.

A nutritionally balanced meal includ-ing, carbohydrates, proteins, vegeta-bles, fruit, dairy and fats should be your first priority when choosing from the menu; and the second priority is portion size or using portion control.

Most restaurants provide more serves on your plate than is necessary – they want you to return frequently; so the extra dollar they pay for that serving and

the extra $15-$20 plus they charge you ends up being great value – FOR THEM. They get to buy a new car and you get to watch your waist expand. So what good are some of those excuses now? Time and again, I see people opting for the larger size order; and this happens not only in fast food outlets.

Take a few minutes as you decide what is tickling your tastebuds at that moment and think about how you are going to eat that meal. Are you having pre-dinner drinks and nibbles… while you decide or discuss what you and everyone else are having? Then there are the appetizers… the entrées… the mains… the coffee and desserts. What about drinks during the meal and after too? Is everyone shar-ing a huge selec-tion of nibbles/ap-petizers, or are you ordering sin-gly? All of these questions relate to how much more you will eat than you normally would, more than you need, and certainly more than you enjoy.

Thinking first and using mod-eration are two

keys to really enjoying a Dine Out or In. Excess food is simple gluttony! Are you celebrating a special event or showing off how much you can eat? All the ex-cuses you were brought up with or the things you tell yourself now, won’t mean much in the end.

Be a role model for others, especially your children. It is OK to say “No, but thank you any-way”, and to leave food on your plate if you are no longer hun-gry, and to take the time to really enjoy what you do eat.

Autumn Gardening by Glenmore Nursery

If you are feeling inspired remem-ber that Autumn is the best time to renovate and plant in your garden. The days become milder but the soil

temperature is still warm encouraging plants to set down a good root system before Spring.

Things to do in the garden: plant an-nuals such as pansies, poppies, primu-la’s, pollyanthus, veggie seedlings such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, leeks, onions, carrots, beet-root, herbs and much more. May is moving month for transplanting plants that need to be repositioned elsewhere in the garden.

Caterpillars can be found on citrus, leafy vegetables and shrubs with the activity of white moths and butterflies. Scale is active so look out for it, if left unnoticed sooty mould will later appear and curl grubs are busy eating roots of plants before they hibernate in winter. Feed your lawn, roses, citrus as well as the veggie patch and potted colour.

It’s time to order your bare rooted stock, which will be available late June. See the advertisement below for East-er Specials at Glenmore Nursery.

Airing of QuiltsThe Arms of Australia Inn Museum,

The Great Western Highway in Emu Plains, will again be decorated with hundreds of wonderful quilts on Sat-urday, April 10 and Sunday April 11. The quilts are all made by the Caring Hearts Community Quilters and are made for charities in the local area, and will be on show at the Inn from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 12 to 4pm on Sunday.

The 12 dedicated, self funded, la-dies have made in the vicinity of 600 quilts since 2005 when the group was started. This year they are working

on quilts for the Blue Mountains and Springwood Hospitals for their Pallia-tive care wards and the Women’s Cri-sis Centre in Richmond.

In addition to the magnificent quilts, there will be music from the Swing West Jazz Orchestra on Saturday from 12-1pm and the Concert Band on Sunday from 12-1pm.

The Emu Plains Lions Club will again be providing a Sausage Sizzle and there will be trading and gift stalls, raffle and Devonshire teas.

For information, call Margaret on 4735 2058.

Exhibition of Early Sporting Memorabilia

This year marks the 200th anniver-sary of the beginning of Lachlan Mac-quarie’s term as the fifth governor of the colony of New South Wales.

The National Trust Heritage Fes-tival 2010 will be holding a variety of community-hosted events across met-ropolitan and regional NSW.

To mark the anniversary, the Arms of Australia Inn Museum will be hold-

ing a display of early sporting photographs, which will include cricket, rowing, har-ness racing and bas-ketball, as well as oth-er items of sporting in-terest from the Nepean area.

The exhibition will run from the 12 to 22 of April and a 1800s style cricket match is being organised for the weekend of the 17 and 18 April.
