History of gf oats
in UK supermarkets 3 yrs ago: Tesco, Sainsbury, Coop GF had porridge oats from Sweden and
packed in Holland – rejection and product recall > Canadian oats. Glebe Farm is 100% UK GF oats GF Flakes are packed into Waitrose, Morrisons own label porridge bags. GF Oat Flour into biscuits into own label Asda, JS, Tesco free from biscuits. Every pallet is tested to be GF. Other oat mills ‘cream off’ gf oats.
Eg <6 samples are tested from a lorry 29t on intake- the oats that tested gf so are used, the rest are used for regular oats. Is 6 samples enough?
Glebe Farm has dedicated gluten free –
We would test 29x! We don’t do regular oats!
Growing of oats It is not a variety that is GF as all pure oats are GF. It is when it is contaminated with
wheat or barley.
Importance of a good clean seed bed and have clean seed to sow.
Normal oat seed has a tolerance of 1% wheat or barley so at Glebe Farm we clean it again!
Oats are sown in Autumn or in Spring but all oats are harvested in August!
You cannot grown continuous oats as the weeds would be out of control so they are rotated with oilseed rape, vegetable crops, grass as break crops. It is important not to grow a wheat or barley crop in front of an oat crop otherwise the wheat will grow through into the oat crop.
Clean harvest machinery to avoid contamination Ie the combine, tractors and trailers, grain store and forklift.
Most farmers don’t care much for about contamination. Oats grown after the more profitable wheat crop. Combines go straight in to the next crop. Oats stored next to wheat.
A sample of Quaker regular oats tested about 120ppm.
Contamination stats
• Several grains of wheat or barley in a 1kg sample of oats is >20pmm gluten so is not gluten free.
• GF oat flour is even harder to achieve as milling pulverises the grain so if there is any contamination it would easily be identified in a gluten test.
• That’s why so many GF oat mills GF oat flour…so there is gluten in there!
• Glebe Farm achieves <5ppm gluten with every tonne that is flaked into porridge and milled into oat flour.

The stats & Eating out • 1 in 100 Coeliac. 10 in 100: ‘feel better’/ ‘lifestyle’
choice of avoiding wheat. • Supermarkets well catered but…Restaurants,
cafes. Demand for gf refreshments is high, supply is poor.
• So every 10th person > restaurant/café would prefer a gf option. Offering? A sad unexciting GF cupcake?
• That 10th person > WHOLE FAMILY to another eatery offering gf. So restaurant has missed out on not 1 person but up to say 4 people!.
