United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island held its annual Life Without Limits Gala on Friday ,October 26, 201 8 at Flowerfield in St. Jam es, NY. This y ear’s ev ent honored Brian Edwards,President of Consum er Banking for Sterling National Bank. The ev ent raised ov er $1 85,000 insupport of the com prehensiv e program s and serv ices that UCP of Long Island prov ides tothousands of children and adults with disabilities. UCP-LI’s Sensations and Sensations Jr. perform ed two m agical song and dance num bers thatcaptiv ated the entire audience. The dy nam ic m usical groups consist of our indiv iduals from theLong Island Adult Day Serv ices Program and The Children’s Center. Following the inspirationalperform ance, Mr. Friedm an presented the Life Without Limits Award to Sterling NationalBank for their unwav ering com m itm ent and dedication to UCP.

The form al ev ent was co-chaired by Jav ier Ev ans, Chief Hum an Resource Officer of SterlingNational Bank and Carm en Tom eo, CEO of WE Transport. Stev e Louro, CEO of Professional GroupPlans serv ed as an Honorary Chair. Our individuals from The Adult Day Program put on quite the show for their peers andstaff by participating in our annual Halloween activities! Each of the individuals had theopportunity to dress up in their most creative costumes and parade around the buildingfor all to see!

Each year our friends at VOXX International host a Halloween costume contest for theiremployees. The Adult Day Program individuals are invited to judge the winners! Ourindividuals had an amazing time viewing all of the creative costumes and socializing withVOXX employees during the pizza party. To enter the costume contest each employeemakes a contribution. Proceeds from the event are donated to UCP-LI's programs andservices for adult and children with disabilities. We thank our friends from VOXX for thisannual tradition!

The Employment Connection has been extremely busy this holiday season as more storesare going out of business. Our indiv iduals from The Adult Day Program and Brushstrokes Program participated in theannual Self Adv ocacy Association of NYS Conference. Indiv iduals from the Brushstrokes Programhad the opportunity to showcase their beautiful paintings for all to see! Indiv iduals from TheAdult Day Program participated in the conference itself by learning m ore about their civ il rightsand responsibilities. Additionally , they participated in group activ ities that highlighted choicesof equal leadership through educating, adv ocating, networking and prom oting self-respect.

The conference concluded with the Edwin Schm idkuntz Award that was presented to UCP-LI onbehalf of Joe Ross. Joe’s peers and fellow m em bers of the Citizens First Self-Adv ocacy Group,posthum ously nom inated him to receiv e the Erwin Schm idtkunz Award. Joe was a m em ber ofCitizens First for m any y ears serv ing as Treasurer, and President. Before becom ing a m em ber ofCitizens First, Joe was a m em ber of Tom orrow’s Future which also m et at UCP beforedisbanding. Although he was non-v erbal, Joe was alway s able to m ake his point. Joe attendednum erous Self-Adv ocacy Association of New York State conferences, bringing his father along forsupport. He would share conference m aterials, keeping us inform ed. Joe also participatedand graduated from Self-Adv ocacy Association of NYS, and earned a degree in accounting.

Brushstrokes Artist Receives First PlaceAward at Cerebral Palsy Associations of

New York State Luncheon

Our v ery own brushstrokes artist, Robertreceiv ed the 1 st Place Award of the 201 8Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York StateVisions of New York Art Contest! This annualcontest highlights artwork created by peoplewith disabilities across the state.

He was honored at the Cerebral PalsyAssociations of New York State luncheon.Robert's artwork, "Venice at its Best" wasfeatured and distributed to all affiliates as partof their com m em orativ e poster.
