GIVE HOPE TO OUR SERVICES

 Louise*, Depaul Ireland Service User-

I ran away from foster care at 16. The reason why I ran away is be-cause I went back to my real family and it didn’t work out, because my family could not look after me. I was also in care with my sister. I had a baby at 18, lived in a B&B then moved into rented accommoda-tion, I had my second child but my relationship broke down and my children went to their father. I went back into homeless accommoda-tion. For the last 7 years I was sleeping rough.

When I got pregnant on this occasion I moved to Rendu Apartments. I will be at Rendu at Christmas and am looking forward to Christmas here. Having my baby with me, it feels like home. I am happy to have a place to call home for Christmas and it is nice to have a place you can bring a child when you are homeless.

My HOPE for New Year is to get my own place and move out of home-lessness for good.

*Name has been changed at the request of the interviewee.

Ruth, Depaul Ireland Volunteer-

I have been a volunteer with Rendu Apartments and now Depaul Ire-land Befriending programme for four years. In that time I have met many service users come with the HOPE of making their lives better. Many have achieved this having faced adversity in their lives. Their HOPE has never died. HOPE drives people, it is a continuing light in-side. Even if it is just a flicker, it is still there and can become bigger. HOPE is believing life can get better. It helps us work towards our goals. HOPE has always been alive in Rendu and the Befriending pro-gramme since I have volunteered. This is thanks to the service users, volunteers and staff of Depaul Ireland.

My HOPE for 2013 is to continue to volunteer with Depaul Ireland and help service users achieve their goals and dreams.

Peter, Depaul Ireland Manager-

My HOPE for Tus Nua in 2013 is to ensure the high quality of service to the women with whom we work is not only maintained, but en-hanced. This will include introducing a Befriending approach to the service to work with women to help mitigate isolation, loneliness and social exclusion, as well as a focus on positive move on connections to help smooth the transition of the women who are moving on from Tus Nua and positively reintegrating into the community.

My HOPE for our service users is that they will continue to feel val-ued, welcomed and supported at every stage of their time with us. I HOPE for the management and staff team that they will continue to be energised by the work and rise to the challenge and opportunity each day brings. My HOPE for the service overall, that no matter what 2013 brings, we maintain the ‘home’ that is Tus Nua that means much more than bricks and mortar.

HOPE FOR DEPAUL IRELAND

Kerry Anthony MBE, CEO of Depaul Ireland My HOPE for Depaul Ireland in 2013 is that we will continue to provide high levels of care and support to very vulnerable peo-ple. I also HOPE that we will be able to work with other providers to provide access to affordable housing for people who are ready to move on this will con-tribute to my HOPE of seeing an end to long term homelessness.

My HOPE personally for 2013 is that I will complete my first tri-athlon. I have been talking about it for the last four months and so I HOPE to complete it and stay true to my word. Although it is a personal challenge, it is a chal-lenge for HOPE and all the pro-ceeds will go to Depaul Ireland of course!

Join Kerry and Give HOPE to Depaul Ireland.

HOSTING A COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING EVENT IN 5 STAGES…

1 PLANNING… Pick an event or activity. You could go with one of the ideas listed in the fundraising ideas page

in this pack… or go for something completely original! Depending on how big the project is, you might also want to get a bit of support behind you. Maybe another fundraiser, a friend or family member who can help encourage and support you along the way.

Choose a date and venue. Will you hold your activity at home, at the office, in the garden or some-where a little different? Think about what time of the year is best and find out what else is going on in the local area. Also, keep in mind that you’ll probably need a bit of time to plan and promote your event, try to take this in consideration so you don’t stress yourself out!

Set your fundraising target. Decided your sponsorship goal, suggested donation or entry fee for the event. You might also want to plan some fundraising activities such as a raffles or auctions to raise even more money. Think about any costs you may incur and do your best to stick to your budget!

Get in contact with us. Fill out the proposal form, send it to us via email/post, we’ll send you a letter to approve your event and link-in with you to find out how we can support you along the way.

2 PROMOTING…

Make a poster. If you’d like to put up posters in your local area or contact local papers for coverage, we can help you with designing a poster. Don’t forget, if you’re making something with our logo on it, it will need to be approved by our fundraising & communications team before going public.

Get the word out online. Facebook and Twitter are great places to start spreading the work your event to all your friends, family and colleagues. To promote your event ask friends, family and colleagues to help out, donate and get their ideas. Use posters with photos and updates to encourage participation!

Another important tool for sponsorship & events is a personal fundraising page which can be quickly set-up on www.justgiving.com (for pound sterling donations) or www.mycharity.ie (for euro donations). Set-ting up your own fundraising page helps make it as simple as possible for your friends, family and col-leagues to support you.

Talk about it face-to face. If you’d like to do your fundraising face-to-face, we can supply you with sponsor cards, stickers and collection buckets, as needed. Please let us know what you need and we’re hap-py to help get it to you. You can also get help along the way by contacting your local shops, pubs and restau-rants to donate items, prizes or display posters. Let us know if you’d like to do this so we can prepare an offi-cial letter of approval, or a draft letter template to aid you in talking to local businesses.

3 PREPARING…

Make a schedule for the day of the event. Run through the day beforehand to be sure you are prepared for any changes of plan or emergencies. As well as having fun it is vital that in holding any event you protect yourself and others. See the ‘guidelines at a glance’ page for more information on keeping it safe and keeping it legal.

4 SHARING & ASKING…

Share with people about how Depaul Ireland makes a difference. Be sure your guests and sponsors know how their money will help and why you’ve personally decided to support Depaul Ireland. We can provide you with a few HOPE stories that you could share about our work. If you’ve never been into one of our services, maybe you’d like to visit one before your event to see first hand what it’s like.

Ask them to support Depaul Ireland. Your efforts to help bring HOPE to people experiencing homelessness and marginalization and help make a huge difference and bring HOPE for change and a more positive future to men, women and children living in our services across Ireland.

Bring in the donations. If you’ve collected cash/cheque donations. Post in a cheque payable to De-paul Ireland for the total amount. If you prefer to give us the money and sponsorship in person, feel free to call in to our office in Dublin or Belfast. Don’t forget to attach your sponsorship cards and attendance sheets as well! If you’ve collected donations online via JustGiving or MyCharity, the full amount will be transferred auto-matically us. You can also transfer the donation directly to the Depaul Ireland fundraising account. For account details, please contact us so we know the money is coming in from you.

5 THANKING & EVALUATING…

Thank your guests and sponsors. We are happy to provide template thank you letters and posters to help show appreciation to all the people who supported you in your fundraising efforts. Every-thing from money, ideas, help, attendance is appreciated. Everyone participating in your event or donating to our work will be helping to make a difference in Depaul Ireland, so let them know how much they have helped to raise for your overall donation.

Let us know how you got on with your event! We’d love it if you would share photos and stories so we can recognize your hard work on our website, Facebook, Twitter and in our newsletter in order to help encourage others to support us!

Keep in contact. We would love to keep in touch with you to keep you updated on our work and how your support helps us. If your sponsors or guests happy to share their information, we can follow up with them after the event. Just be sure to have them fill out their contact information on the sponsor card or at-tendee list.
