DESCRIPTION

This is a good presentation from Milsoft's 2009 User Conference, focused on our GIS geographic information system solutions for Electric Utility Companies. It was originally presented by Sam Pless. Milsoft Electric Utility Solutions Users Conference is the premier event for both our users and the various vendors who provide interoperable power transmission infrastructure management solutions or services that enhance Milsoft Smart Grid Systems. Intro

• Workflow in 7.3• WindMilMap 8.0• Milsoft Circuit Model Server• Project Management• Workflow in WindMilMap 8.0

Page 3: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Basic Workflow in 7.3

• Import a staking sheet within MultiSpeak

Page 4: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Basic Workflow in 7.3

• Lines and Points show up in WindMilMap in a Project.

Page 5: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Basic Workflow in 7.3

• Connect everything accordingly using the WindMilMap Edit Toolbar.

Page 6: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Basic Workflow in 7.3

• Select the Projects you want to commit to the base model.

• Commit changes to the model.

Page 7: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Basic Workflow in 7.3

• Save Edits in ArcMap.• Edits Saved to the Server Model• Now when anyone Opens or Refreshes the

model, they will get the changes.

Page 8: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

WindMilMap 8.0

• The process for Workflow in 7.3 wasn’t set up well for approving changes.

• Workflow in 8.0 allows for user permission and approval process.

• Project Management was re-written for 8.0.• We have a Milsoft Circuit Model server.

Page 9: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Setting Up Milsoft Circuit Model Server

• WindMil 8.0 now has a piece called Milsoft Circuit Model Server.

• It allows you to interface with Milsoft Field Engineering.

• It also allows you to set up different folders and user permissions.

Page 10: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Setting Up Milsoft Circuit Model Server

• Open the Milsoft Circuit Model Server.

• Go to the Model Tab.– Shows you what server you’re

connected to – Also shows what port you’re

using– Click on the Configure button.

Page 11: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Model Server Configuration• After clicking on the Configure button• There are two tabs

– Projects– Users

Page 12: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Projects Tab• Under the Projects Tab, you can set up

different Project Types.• The Project Types show up in WindMil

or WindMilMap in the Project Management tab.

• Add• Remove• Properties - will show you a list of

which users have permissions to that project type.

Page 13: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Users Tab

• The User tab is where you can add and change which users can edit Project Types.

• Once the user is added, click on the Properties button.

Page 14: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Users Tab – Properties Button• Add any project type that you want the

selected user to be able to edit projects within to the Current Permissionscolumn.

• If a user is given permission to Commit, then their Commit All Checked Projects button will be enabled in their linked model, and they will be allowed to commit projects to the base model.

• You can come back to this dialog at any time to Add or Remove permissions for any or all users.

Page 15: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Project Management in 8.0 WindMilMap• Project Management has been re-written in WindMilMap version 8.0• Project Management allows users to track system changes in

project format without permanently changing the WindMil model. • Project Management allows the user to represent system changes

without having to maintain multiple models for the different configurations.

• Users can try different configurations of changes to the model and compare the differences between option 1 and option 2, all within the same Milsoft circuit model.

Page 16: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Project Management in 8.0 WindMilMap

• The first time you open WindMilMap 8.0, you will need to click on Enable Project Management.

• This will activate Project Management.

Page 17: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Project Management Basics

• To create a new project, right-click on My Project.

• Select New Project….• This brings up a window to name the Project.• Once the Project is named, it becomes active.• You can also create Project Folders to help

better organize each project in the model.

Page 18: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Project Management Basics• To know what project you are working

on, Project Management tells you what the active project is at the top of the Table of Contents.

• When working in an Active Project and changes are made to the project, they will be saved in that project.

• There is no limit to the number of times a project can be edited and saved.

Page 19: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Project Management Basics• Right-click on a Project, and a Context menu pops up.• Activate Project –checks the box next to Project and enables it in

the work environment• New Child Project –allows you to create projects that are linked to

a parent project; these projects can only be enabled if the parent project is enabled.

• Ungroup Project from Parent – removes a child project from beneath the parent and puts the project on the same level as the parent project.

Page 20: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Project Management Basics• Delete Project – removes the project from the list, and

any tasks included in the project will be deleted.• Rename Project - allows the project name to be

changed.• Export Project – sends the project changes to an .xml

file that can be transferred to another user using Project Management on the same model.

• Properties – shows a Project Properties dialog that allows the user to enter in a project description and edit the project color. This dialog also shows the user a list of the changes made during the project.

Page 21: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Project Management Basics• Zoom to Project Extents – changes the current zoom

view of the model to include all elements that are part of the selected project.

• Select all Elements in Project – selects all elements in the project, showing them as the selected color in the model and allowing the user to use Global Edit to make changes to the selected elements.

Page 22: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Workflow in 8.0• Having these Users and Permissions

allow all users to see what each other are working on but not all can edit the project

• If you try to edit a project and you do not have permissions, all the edits are made in the Default Project under My Projects

• A Staking Folder for all in coming from Milsoft Field Engineering

Page 23: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Work Flow in 8.0 – Mapping Tech• The Mapping Tech can take the Jobs that need

to be worked on from the Staking Folder. • The Mapping Tech can place the Job in the My

Project Folder.• Once done with the Job, the Mapping Tech can

place it in the Mapping Supervisor Project Type.• The Mapping Tech doesn’t have permission to

Commit any change to the base model.

Page 24: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Workflow in 8.0 – Supervisor • The Mapping Supervisor can:

– Turn on and off Mapping Tech Projects if the Mapping Tech isn’t using them;

– Assign Jobs by dragging and dropping the Project into the appropriate project type;

– Check the Jobs he has been assigned, then advance the Jobs by dragging and dropping them into the Engineering Type.

Page 25: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Workflow in 8.0 – Engineering• Engineering

– Can see what everyone is working on– Can check what was passed on by the

Mapping Supervisor– Can have a project for long-term

planning– Can place correct jobs in the Mapping

Project

Page 26: GIS Software Workflow With Project Management

Workflow in 8.0• Jobs placed in the Mapping

Project are now ready to commit to the base model.

• So the Mapping Supervisor can commit those projects to the model.
