Objectives

• Discuss the different ways that GIS can work for you

• Discuss different types of data that can be integrated with GIS

• Examples of using GIS as an analyzing tool

• Examples of how automating can save time and money

Page 3: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

What Can GIS Do For You?

• Create Maps• Visualize Scenarios• Integrate Information• Present Powerful Ideas• Develop Effective Solutions• Automate Labor Intensive

Tasks• Analyze Complicated Problems

Page 4: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Integrating with GIS

• Benefits of Integrating Other Application Data with GIS– Increased Accuracy– Decreased Labor– “Real Time” Updates– Reduce Duplicate Data Entry– More Data Available for Analyzing– Increases Your ROI

Page 5: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Integrating with GIS

• What is needed:– Connection between two data sources– Common link between data– Direct link to other data sources OR process

to import/export other data to/from GIS

Page 6: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Integrating – CIS Data

• Customer and Service Information Imported from the CIS– Name, Address, Account #, Meter #,

Connected Status, Load Management, etc.– Allows for symbology on the map to reflect the

consumer data such as disconnected, load management, etc.

– Reduces data entry for all consumer features

Integrating – Equipment Data

• Maintenance programs based in Microsoft Access

All equipment data and maintenance records are recorded in the Maintenance Program.

Page 9: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Integrating – Equipment Data

• Data is then imported into the GIS

• Reports show the differences between the Maintenance Programs and GIS

• GIS Admin can quickly add in missing equipment and import data again

Page 10: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Integrating – Turtle Meter Data

• Data from Turtle meters is imported to the GIS– Turtle status, KWh readings and dates, peak

usage information, etc.

• Data is then used to analyze different scenarios such as power fail statuses and transformer loading

Page 11: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Analyzing with GIS

• Better information leads to better decisions

• Having integrated data enhances decision making processes– Analyze data by means of reports and

visual aids– Wide range of data to analyze

Page 12: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Analyzing with GIS

• There are many ways to use GIS as an analytical tool– Within the mapping environment you can flag

features that meet a certain criteria for quick visual analyzing

– You can perform traces on a geometric network (if available) and print various report based on the result of the trace

– You can also analyze outside of the mapping environment using the GIS data

Page 13: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Analyzing – Power Fail

• Power Fail Analysis is a visual analysis tool that utilizes GIS and data integrated from CIS and Turtle meters– Upon receiving an outage call, Turtle data is

imported into the GIS and the Turtle meter status is updated for all consumers

Page 14: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Analyzing – Power Fail

• Symbology on the map is based on the consumer’s Turtle meter status

• Any consumer with a ‘powered down’ status shows up on the map in red

• This aids in analyzing the situation more effectively and being able to fix the problem in a more timely manner

Analyzing – Peak Usage Downstream Trace

• Peak Usage Downstream Trace is a reporting tool used to analyze the peak usage on an electrical distribution line– This tool utilizes the

geometric network on a GIS system

– Using some of the network analysis tools, we place a flag at the starting location and begin our trace

Page 17: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Analyzing – Peak Usage Downstream Trace

• Using data from the Turtle meters and CIS that was integrated, we produce a report that shows the consumers peak usage for seven days and the total peak usage for all those consumers

Analyzing – Transformer Sizing

• Analyzing can even be done outside of the mapping environment using GIS data

• The Transformer Sizing Application is used to analyze the size of transformers compared to the peak loads of consumers fed from those transformers

• Integrates GIS, CIS and Turtle meter data to create a report of transformers and consumer load

Automating with GIS

• Automating GIS processes improves efficiency and streamlines day to day processes

• Automation can be accomplished by using various techniques– User defined buttons and tools in the mapping

environment that simulate steps taken to accomplish a task

– Stand alone applications that are integrated into GIS streamlining the process of retrieving data from one application and using it in another

Page 22: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Automating – Plot Routines

• The customized plot routines automate map book creation

• Polygon layers are used to zoom to the correct location and extent for the map page

• Attribute information is used to fill out title block information

• Print one page or entire map book

Automating – FP Tool

• The Feature Placement Tool is used to speed up the process of placing new features on the map

• Snapping settings saved for future use

• Changes a four to five step process into one step.

Page 25: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Automating – Phase Change

• The Phase Change Tool is used to trace downstream from a specified point and change the phase of the conductor and connected equipment

• Benefit by changing an attribute on an unlimited number of features at one time

Automating - ADELINE®

• ADELINE® Staking Software is built to automate some of the processes involved in creating staking sheets from a GIS system and updating a GIS system from a completed staking sheet

Page 29: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Automating - ADELINE®

• By integrating GIS and staking you can increase operational efficiency– Reduces paperwork– Eliminate double entry of data

(staking sheet and GIS)– Increases time and cost savings by

automating updates to GIS

Page 30: GIS: Integrating, Analyzing and Automating It's Easier Than You Think

Automating - ADELINE®

• Create Retirement Staking Sheets from existing data in GIS

• Extract a base map from GIS to create New Construction Staking Sheets from

• Extract existing data from GIS to validate system inventory

• Post back staking sheets to update GIS
