Medium voltage – cleverly and reliably switchedGas-insulated switchgear: Operationally reliable, compact, and climate-independent
2
There is one thing you just have to rely on: Smooth and safe operation of your system. Around the clock. Here, switchgear assem-blies as points of intersection play a deci-sive role – and switchgear concepts from Siemens offer the best solution with no doubt.
As a pioneer for gas-insulated switchgear we bring along more than 25 years of know-how, so that you can take full advan-tage of this technology – with a compact, maintenance-free and climate-independent design. For lower ratings we also offer air-insulated switchgear type SIMOSEC with SF6 switch-disconnectors. The only decisive factor are your requirements.
For perfect operation of your system
With Siemens you are always on the safe side. Whether for secondary or for primary distribution switchgear – all our switch-gear is already type-tested today for indoor installation according to IEC 62271-200 (in main aspects also according to ANSI C37.20). In this way you profit from our leading position as regards fulfillment of this new standard, and the fact that Siemens switchgear has been a synonym for maximum personal and operational safety for decades.
We take care that you can “switch cleverly.” Combining innovation and experience. With comprehensive know-how, worldwide service – and profound understanding of your markets. Go and see for yourself!
The gas-insulated switchgear from Siemens offer decisive advantages for the cost-efficient
operation of your distribution grid.

1977Siemens brings the first vacuum circuit-breaker to market, setting new standards regarding the reachable number of oper-ating cycles, necessary maintenance, small dimensions, reliability, and environmental independence.
1982The first gas-insulated switchgear for the primary distribution level is available, with the type designation 8DA10 and 8DB10. And for the secondary distribu-tion level, Siemens offers the type 8DJ10 as the first hermetically welded, mainte-nance-free gas-insulated switchgear worldwide. This is the first switchgear that is extremely compact and climate- independent.
1985With 7SA502, Siemens was the first worldwide provider to introduce a micro-processor-based multifunction protection relay to the market, thus initiating the age of numerical protection and control systems.
1993As the first switchgear of its kind, 8DH10 switchgear for the secondary distribution level combines hermetically welded tech-nology and maintenance-free design with simple extensibility. In the same year, the first maintenance-free, hermetically welded switchgear appears on the primary distri-bution level: NXPLUS C. Gas work for installation and extension is therefore a thing of the past.
2000Siemens offers sealed systems for the complete medium-voltage range – up to 40.5 kV, 40 kA, 5,000 A.
2006Every gas-insulated switchgear from Siemens complies with the new switch-gear standards IEC 62271-100 and -200.
2008Siemens launches the 8DJH gas-insulated switchgear on the market, offering an especially flexible, reliable, and high-quality product series with expanded functionality for distribution networks up to 24 kV.
More than 25 years of gas-insulated medium-voltage switchgear from SiemensIn 1982 Siemens introduced a global inno-vation to the market: The first gas-insulated switch-gear for medium voltage. Right from the beginning, this innovation has been a success story. For us, this is a commitment to continuous development: As a leader in technology we have been permanently redefining performance and economic efficiency for a quarter century – a process you, as the customer, benefit from. Even tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

High demands – in practical implemen-tation: The 3D CAD procedure3D CAD design tools provide for the precise implementation of quality and reliability for our switchgear in development and production. The data of your switchgear is transferred directly from the purchase order to the production department via the design department with mathematical precision. Using innovative technologies we can offer a maximum of quality and flexibility in production – with short delivery times.
For surge-proof operation: Cast-resin part manufactureInsulating parts made of cast resin guaran-tee the dielectric strength of high-voltage phases to earth. The complete production process of such parts – which are essential for switchgear – is integrated in our pro-duction. The quality of these components is 100% routine-tested by means of X-ray, tightness, high-voltage, and partial dis-charge tests.
More precise, faster, tighter: The laser welding equipmentThe application of laser welding tech- nology leads to maximum precision, fast throughput times, and gas tightness. The electrical bushings of the stainless-steel vessels are welded in without seals – as well as the metal bellows for transmis-sion of the operating energies from out-side the vessel to the switching devices located inside.
Systematic quality – by innovative procedures, technologies, and production processes
With six product families for the primary and secondary distribution level, our switchgear factories in Frankfurt/ Main (Germany), Wuxi (China), and Goa (India) enjoy leading positions on the world market in developing and manufacturing gas-insulated medium-voltage switch-gear. The reason is a distinct understanding of quality, reaching far beyond the certification according to DIN EN ISO 9001 and 14001. Thousands of switchgear assemblies running reliably all over the world are an impressive proof for this. Decades of experience in development, manufacture, quality and environmental management as well as in service support the leading position of the factory – as a worldwide center of competence and production for medium-voltage switchgear from Siemens.
15
Strict eyes: Type and routine tests as an integral part of quality assuranceVery modern testing laboratories ensure the high quality of our products. Here, type and routine tests for the different switch-gear types as well as continuous process-accompanying quality assurance according to ISO 9001 and 14001 are performed. Our accredited testing laboratories in Frankfurt/Main and Berlin are among the
largest in the world. Being associated with PEHLA, they have the status of independent test institutes. Furthermore, our type tests are internationally accepted. For example, we take over the testing and certification of packaged substations from other manu-facturers who do not have a testing labora-tory of their own.
Everything tight, everything all right: Integral leakage detection system“Sealed for life” is the target for each and every switchgear vessel. For this purpose, the vessel is evacuated together with the test chamber and then filled separately with helium, which has a smaller molecular structure than SF6. If no escaping helium is detected, gas tightness is guaranteed for life. The helium gas is absorbed again, the switchgear vessel is refilled with SF6, and the filling socket is welded tight.
With standards to success: AssemblyStandards play an important part at the switchgear factory Frankfurt am Main. The sequence of a process is documented in a reproducible way – to guarantee that the quality level the customer expects is reached in a fast, safe, and reproducible way. For example, assembly: It is divided into clearly defined operations and orga-nized following the one-piece-flow
principle. Essential tools are always ready to hand, parts and materials are supplied to the workplace – all this saves energy, time, and supports precision. According to the push-pull principle, the subsequent process always controls the preceding process: For example, by the information that an operation has been completed or that material is required.
Everything tailor-made: The laser cutting systemThe use of CNC-controlled laser cutting systems guarantees the manufacture of precise, exact parts with a surface free of scratches – at a high cutting speed. Maximum material utilization is ensured by the programs generated by the NC processor.
