Materials Required

• Elevation Information – Digital Elevation Model (DEM)

o Many publicly available sources: USGS, State of Iowa

o Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (STRM) used in class

o Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) (*bare earth*)

o Range of resolutions (both X-Y and Z)

• Satellite Imagery – Background Image

o Bing Maps basemap (ArcGIS), Orthoserver

o Provide background for better looking maps

o Determine shoreline, area features, etc.

• Other – land use, land cover, gathered or existing data

o Some states and areas have more information available

o Save work wherever possible!
