Introduction / My backgroundOnline since age 9Programmed computers, managed networks, worked on security & policyWrote a book about digital life for adultsHelp teach adults and kids about online safety

What is the Internet?

- Giant network- Almost all of the computers and electronic devices in the world- Connected by wires and by airInternet of Things even your thermostat & refrigerator can be connected to the Internet3

a show of handsWho here uses computers, tablets (like iPads), mobile phones (Android phones, iPhones) every day?How about game machines, like Wii, Xbox, Nintendo? What about social networks? Are any of you on Instagram, Club Penguin, Facebook?Everybody using Minecraft? Animal Jam?And how many of you take photos on your devices?

THEY ALL HAVE CAMERAS!4

Important Safety tipsOnly use these devices when there is an adult nearby to make sure you are safeAlways store your devices in a central locationAlways ask an adult for help if you are confused, stuck or scaredMake sure any apps you use are age-appropriateMake sure a parent or guardian knows ALL of your passwords & codes

See Common Sense Media for age level ratings5

Smart, safe, fairGirl Scout digital training emphasizes these 3 qualities for postingMake sure anything you do online is smart, safe for you and fair to othersDont answer messages from strangersDont give out your last name or addressDont put personal info in photos or videos

Locations will be embedded into photos / videos6

How apps & games workNative applications on the computerApps on mobile devicesSocial networks or websitesShared servers

How websites & ads workWebsites send you to someone elses server / computer networkSites then run software on their networkSometimes sites can track your informationAds are just trying to sell you stuffSome sites & ads can try to steal your information so be careful

How social networks workUsers input some personal informationConnect to other usersShare information together (text, images, audio, video)Everything is saved long-term

Likes & follows what mattersDo you know how many followers you have?Do you track shares, retweets, likes?Do you frame selfies, images, videos & posts for other peoples enjoyment or for your own?

THINK VERY HARD ABOUT THIS. YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA IS FOR YOU, NO ONE ELSE.

How email & texting worksEnd-to-end messagesCan have hidden recipientsSpam (unwanted advertisements)Phishing (pretend requests to get information)Trash Deleted

A cautionary tale (True story)A girls friend asked her to send him a photo of her without a shirt on. She wasnt sure.He kept pressuring her. He promised he would delete it after he saw it.She sent it to him. He showed some of his friends and the photo was shared online. She was bullied for months and her family decided to move away.

What is online bullying?Comes from people thinking its ok to say things online that they wont say in-person (thats not right) or thinking they wont get caughtMean-spirited languageSometimes anonymous attacksSometimes on sites where the messages disappear so theres no proofDont be a bully; report problems IMMEDIATELY

Building Your online personaWhat do you want to show of yourself online? What do you want others to see? What do you want school administrators and college admissions officers to see? What do you want prospective employers to see?

Start simply. Always think about what is public and what is private.14

Public vs. private - exerciseGoogleNews SitesEmailInstagramBlogsText messagesPhotos shared/stored in the cloud

Which is this? Public or private?15

RememberAnything and everything you put on a computer can end up online. Anything that ends up online can be there forever. It is very difficult to remove anything that has been put online. Be careful! And dont wait to get help.

QuizIs it ok to share your address with a stranger online? Is it ok to save photos of you or anyone naked or partly naked on a phone or computer? Is it ok to use computer without clothes on?Is it ok to send photos with your name and no location to contests?

NONONONONO. It is ILLEGAL.Its just like getting in a car with a stranger. Never do it.Do not let ANYONE convince you for ANY reason. It can result in images living on the Internet FOREVER, leading to terrible bullying and embarrassment.17

Internet safety pledgeTake turns reading each statement out loud and SIGN!Make sure your troop leaders share this with your parents.
