AUTHEnTIC WILdLIFE ExPERIEnCES

See kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, koalas and emus in their natural environment of Australian coastal bush land, eucalypt forests and fern gullies.Just three hours south east of Melbourne, Wilsons Promontory National Park is a haven for Australian wildlife. Watch kangaroos bounding through the bush or spot wombats ambling through the park looking for a feed around dusk and dawn.

The Gippsland Lakes abound in native bird and wildlife. Take a cruise and glimpse birdlife and kangaroos grazing by the water. In Metung, catch the feeding of the Australian Pelicans daily at midday. Raymond Island, just off Paynesville’s shoreline, is home to a large koala colony and is one of the best places in Victoria to go koala spotting.

The alpine heathlands and Mountain Ash forests of the Baw Baw National Park are ideal for spotting wombats, wallabies and sugar gliders. The park is also home to the endangered leadbeater’s possum.

Further east, native wildlife thrives in the pristine remoteness of Mallacoota and the Croajingolong National Park. View the large mob of local kangaroos at Gipsy Point, where the peninsula juts into the Mallacoota Inlet. There are over 280 species of birds in the area. Look for the white-bellied sea eagles by the coast, or lyrebirds and azure kingfishers as you stroll around Lyrebird Walk.

LAKES And BEACHES

Comprised of over 400 square kilometres, the tranquil Gippsland Lakes is Australia’s largest network of inland waterways. The lakeside villages of Lakes Entrance, Metung and Paynesville surround the water’s edge. Hire a boat and set sail across the glistening waters, spot dolphins at play, or cast a line from one of 40 jetties.

The picture-book village of Metung is a charming nautical oasis where visitors come face-to-face with the awe inspiring beauty of the region.

Located on the edge of Ninety Mile Beach where the Gippsland Lakes meets the Southern Ocean, Lakes Entrance offers the best of both worlds.

Explore the lakes from a boat cruise, or hire kayaks, paddleboats or even a houseboat.

With over 600 kilometres of coastline, Gippsland is spoilt with its choice of beaches. Discover Gippsland’s Ninety Mile Beach, one of the longest and most beautiful stretches of sand in the world.

Wilsons Promontory also boasts superb beaches with mountains overlooking the turquoise waters. Find a spot all to yourself on Croajingolong National Park’s pristine and remote sandy beaches.

1 Day Wilsons Promontory TourAUD $125 per personMinimum 4 people, maximum 24 people

The tour departs at approximately 7.15am from Melbourne and returns approximately 9pm. It includes all park entry fees, tea/coffee and biscuits, a friendly informative tour guide and travel in a small group with likeminded people. Bunyip Tours offers a complimentary pickup/ drop off service from inner city hotels.

An unbelievable natural experience awaits you at one of Australia’s best kept secrets, Wilsons Promontory National Park. You will discover an abundance of wildlife surrounded by spectacular coastlines and outer islands. Located at the southernmost point of mainland Australia, this wildlife haven will inspire and intrigue even the most discerning traveller, with its panoramic views, pristine white beaches, coastal forests, cool climate rainforests and well preserved walking tracks

The prom is home to many marsupials, such as kangaroos and wombats, native birds and other native animals such as emus, which with a little luck you are able to see up close. The best way to explore the Prom is on foot so you will no doubt enjoy our hike along some spectacular tracks and be entertained by the pure white quartz ‘singing sands’ of Squeaky Beach as you walk towards Tidal River, the centre of the national park.

Drift back into a different time, when waterways were our highways, and journey from the Port of Sale to the landmark Swing Bridge in central Gippsland.

Spot birds and wildlife as you cruise and your guide recounts the region’s remarkable stories, from its first people the Gunnaikurnai, through early settlement to the present day.

The scene is set as you board The Rubeena, a classic wooden boat first launched at Lakes Entrance in 1912.

Relax into her quiet electric engined rhythm and enjoy your voyage along the Sale Canal and Thompson River, surrounded by Red Gums, birdsong and reminders of a fascinating heritage.

Port of Sale Heritage CruiseAdult AUD$19, Child AUD$15 (under 15) and Family AUD $72 (2 adults, 3 kids)

Daily departures at 10:00 and 14:00 for a 1.5 hour cruise from the Port of Sale to the Historic Swing Bridge. Learn about the Gunnaikurnai people, the aboriginal land owners and their significant sites in the region as well as an insight into the European settlers that utilised this waterway as a major transport system in the 1880’s.
