• The GI was proposed by Loe & Silness in 1963• modified slightly in 1967

• The GI is based on two of the characteristic signs of

• inflammation-swelling (oedema) and redness. An important sign is bleeding.

• score 0 : normal gingiva;• score 1 : mild inflammation, slight change in

colour, slight oedema, no bleeding on probing;• score 2 : moderate inflammation, redness,

oedema, and glazing, bleeding on probing;• score 3 : severe inflammation, marked redness and

oedema, ulceration tendency to spontaneous bleeding.
