I made a little gingerbread
man. He was soft and
brown.
He jumped from the oven
and ran through the town.
He ran away from the big
brown cow.
He ran away from the
little pink sow.

the little old man...
STOP!
Singing, “Catch me,
catch me, if you can!”

Now when I make
gingerbread men I put
them in a jar.
So my little gingerbread
men can’t run far!
Story picture cards to rebuild the story in a pocket
chart or on the floor. The students can use the
word phrase cards to rebuild the story.

at the back of this unit.

So my little
Get out your little rolling pins (like they make for
playdoh) and let your sweeties have some fun with
syllables. They should say the word on the cookie
card and roll the rolling pin as they say the word to
show how many syllables. Choose the recording sheet
or make the flip book to record the words based on
your student’s abilities. Ex:
= 1 roll place on the 1 syllable

Directions: Fold a sheet of 12x18 construction
paper in half hot dog style. Cut the top section
into 3 equal parts. Glue the gingerbread men
cover pictures from page 30 to the top of each
section. Sort the pictures into categories, 1
syllable, 2 syllables, 3 syllables and glue them
under the correct flap.

Gingerbread Man Pie Graph
Directions: 1. Make the Gingerbread Man by following the directions on pg. 30. 2.
Give the students a gingerbread cookie and tell them to take ONE bite. 3. After
they’ve taken a bite ask them to look at their cookie and determine which part
they bit first. 4. Give the students a coin to match the part that they bit and
have them color the gingerbread men. 5. Lay the colored gmen coins on top of a
poster board in a circle with the like pieces together. (See the picture above). 6.
Once you have them in a circle glue them down and then cut around them. This will
be the stomach part of your gingerbread man pie chart. 7. Analyze and discuss the
data. * if you made your gman using a lighter color then it isn’t necessary to use
the posterboard. You can just lay the pieces directly on the gman’s tummy like in
the picture above.

Compare stories using the Venn diagram. Choose two
stories to read then copy and paste the cover of the
books in the squares on the venn diagram.
Story Elements read the story of your choice and use the
story elements recording sheet to record the characters,
refrain (what the main character says), and ending.

For this unit we make a gingerbread journal to record the endings of the various
stories we read. Use the patterns and directions on the following page to
create the journal.

1. For head and body- cut off all four corners and
round out the points. Glue together.
2. For arms and legs- fold in half, cut off all four
corners and round out the points. Glue as
shown.
3. Use scraps to make the icing. Decorate the
cookie using crayons or a red sequin for the
nose and buttons for the tummy.

Many of these math problems incorporate higher level thinking skills. You may want to do
them together on a large chart as part of your math message before having the students
add them to their math journals. Use the clipart on the following page as manipulatives if
desired. There are four gingerbread men.
Each gingerbread man has two buttons. How many buttons altogether? There are two cookie jars.
Each cookie jar has five cookies. How many cookies altogether? I ate two gingerbread men.
There are four more on the plate. How many gingerbread men did I start with?
I have three gingerbread men in a line. One is blue, one is pink and one is green.
The blue one is not first, the green one is last. Draw the gingerbread men.
I baked six gingerbread men. Two of my friends came to visit. How can we share them equally?

Gingerbread Man Math Manipulatives
After the children eat their gingerbread cookie have them
brainstorm a list of adjectives to describe gingerbread. Use the
adjectives to write gingerbread list poems.
Ex:
Gingerbread
Sweet
Soft
Yummy
Gingerbread
Or you could do this type of poem:
I like gingerbread.
Soft gingerbread,
Sweet gingerbread,
Yummy, brown, spicy gingerbread.
I like gingerbread!

Did you ever wonder why the Gingerbread Man didn’t just swim across
the river himself? He might have saved himself a lot of trouble if he
had! This activity will let your little sweeties discover the answer to
this question by conducting a fun and easy science experiment.
Materials Needed for
each group:
Clear plastic
container of
water
Gingerbread
Cookie
Recording Sheet
Steps:
1. Review the Scientific Method using this free

2. Ask your kids the essential question and
have them draw or write their hypothesis.
3. Have them place their cookie in the water
and record their observations on the recording
sheet.
4. Discuss what happened.
Gingerbread Science Experiment
Experiment: I put the Gingerbread Man cookie in water to see what would happen.
Essential Question: What would have happened if the
Gingerbread Man had swam across the river by himself?

Steps:
1. For head and body- cut off all four corners and

the body.
2. For the arms and legs. Fold the
rectangles in half. Cut off all four
corners and round out the points.
Glue to the front of the body.
3. For the eyes fold the piece in half.
Cut off all four corners and round
out the points. Glue in place.
4. For the nose cut off all four corners
and round out the points. Glue in place.
Draw a mouth.
5. For the bow- glue to head if you’re
a girl and under chin for boys.
For the center of the bow cut off all
four corners and round out the points.
Glue in place.
6. Buttons- based on answer to question.
For square buttons-fold piece in half and cut
on the fold. Glue in place. Round buttons-
fold in half and cut off all four corners
and round out the points. Glue in place.
7. Frosting- Fold in half. Fold in half again.
Cut on the folds to make four rectangles.
Glue as shown and trim off excess.
