make contact and negotiate peace with and among several American Indian groups,

explore the headwaters of the Arkansas River, locate the source of the Red River, and descend it to the Mississippi, and

November 27. They kept climbing. Reached the top of a peak but it wasn’t the right one. Pike thought the base of the “Grand Peak” was still 15 or 16 miles away. The snow was up to their waists. The temperature was 4 degrees below zero (Reaumer degrees). Pike gave up and said no one could climb that mountain.

If I were Zebulon Pike, I would want to climb that high mountain, too. If he could climb it, he would be able to see all around him. With his spyglass, he could have seen the rivers he was looking for and the other mountains. He would not have gotten lost.But they didn’t know how hard it was to climb the mountain in the winter so they had to turn back.
