COCKTAILSThere is a lack of clarity on the origins of cocktails. Traditionally cocktails were a mixture of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. But by the 1860s, a cocktail frequently included a liqueur.

Cocktails became less popular in the late 1960s and through the 1970s, until resurging in the 1980s with vodka often substituting the original gin in drinks such as the martini. Traditional cocktails began to make a comeback in the 2000s and by the mid-2000s there was a renaissance of cocktail culture in a style typically referred to as mixology that draws on traditional cocktails for inspiration but utilizes novel ingredients and often complex flavors.

GIN Gin or the phrase “mother’s ruin”, a common British name for gin. The Dutch physician Franciscus Sylvius is often credited with the invention of gin in the mid17th century, although the existence of genever is confirmed in Philip Massinger’s play The Duke of Milan (1623), British soldiers who provided support in were already drinking genever for its calming effects before battle, from which the term Dutch Courage is believed to have originated,

WHISKEYWhiskey uisge beatha = ”lively water” or “water of life”. Early forms of the word in English is an anglicization of the Gaelic word uisce/uisge meaning water. Distilled alcohol was known in Latin as aqua vitae (“water of life”). Geographically it can come from American, Australian, Canadian, Danish, English, German, Indian, Irish, Japanese and Scotch to name a few.

VODKAVodka originated in Eastern Europe, the name stemming from the Russian word 'voda' meaning water or, as the Poles would say 'woda'. The first documented production of vodka in Russia was at the end of the 9th century, but the first known distillery at, Khylnovsk, Poland lays claim to having distilled vodka even earlier in the 8th century but the first identifiable Polish vodkas appeared in the 11th century when they were called 'gorzalka', originally used as medicines.

CLASSICOA traditional Cuban mojito cocktail is the perfect sum-mer drink with its refreshing hint of mint and lime with rum and splash of soda water

MOJITO Mojito has routinely been presented as a favorite drink of author Ernest Hemingway while Havana is the birthplace of the Mojito, although the exact origin of this classic cocktail is the subject of debate. Mojito traces back to the 16th century drink known as “El Draque”, after Francis Drake. Some historians contend that African slaves who worked in the Cuban sugar cane fields during the 19th century were instrumental in the cocktail’s origin. Guarapo, the sugar cane juice often used in Mojitos was a popular drink amongst the slaves who helped coin the name of the sweet nectar. It never originally contained lime juice.

BUBBLESBubbles “the devils wine” An initial burst of bubbles occurs when the Champagne contacts the dry glass on pouring. These bubbles form on imperfections in the glass Dom Pérignon was originally charged by his superiors at the Abbey of Hautvillers to get rid of the bubbles since the pressure in the bottles caused many of them to burst in the cellar. As sparkling wine production increased in the early 18th century, cellar workers had to wear a heavy iron mask to prevent injury from spontaneously bursting bottles. The mysterious circumstance surrounding the then unknown process of fermentation and carbonic gas caused some critics to call the sparkling creations “The Devil’s Wine”.
