We know that fine Bordeaux wines can improve with age. For the best, it is oftennecessary to wait at least two decades, and sometimes much longer for the mostexceptional vintages.

What about Burgundy

wines? Customarily

it is said that they

reach their best expression after 10

or 20 years. After tasting a number

of bottles from the 1970s, 1960s,

1950s, 1940s and even farther back,

I found these wines had an

incomparable nose and taste. And

the icing on the cake is that you can

often find them for a lower price

than the stars of Bordeaux.

THE MAIN RULE IS TO BE SELECTIVE AND CHOOSE: • Quality estates or renowned wine sellers such as

Coche-Dury, Comtes Lafon, De Vogüé, Domaine de la

Romanée Conti, Domaine Leflaive, Dugat, Jayer, Leroy,

Ramonet, Raveneau, Roumier, Rouget, Rousseau, Sauzet,

Verget, and the houses Bouchard, Drouhin, Jadot,

Louis Latour

• Good years such as 1911, 1923, 1928, 1929, 1934, 1937,

1945, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1959, 1962, 1964, 1966, 1969,

1971, 1978, 1985, 1990

• Grand and Premier Crus, preferably from village or regional

appellations

• Well-preserved bottles of a good standard.

Having said that, I have recent experience of Burgundies that

didn’t meet this criteria and yet delighted me with their

charm - and their often more affordable price. Some examples

include 1945 Morin Chambolle-Musigny, 1948 A. Perdrizet

Meursault, 1956 Domaine de la Romanée Conti Grands

Echezeaux, 1957 Pierre Ponnelle Puligny-Montrachet, 1959

Chanson Père et Fils Batard Montrachet, 1964 Domaine des

Varoilles Clos des Varoilles, and 1972 Raveneau Montée de
