welcome toOnce upon a time (1984 to be precise) in the Buchan village of Mintlaw, 1 mile from Aden Country Park and less than 1/2 hours drive from Aberdeen, a seed was planted named The Happy Plant Garden Centre.

Over the years it has grown to become a flourishing business renowned for its quality products and service.

Life began as a little wooden shed in a ‘boggy howe,’ but 35 years on it is one of the largest gift and garden centres in the north east of Scotland and has achieved a four-star rating from the Scottish Tourist Board.

The site now covers approximately four acres, including a large car park and has over 60 friendly and helpful employees on the payroll, many of them long-term members of staff who have ‘grown up’ with the business.

To accommodate the large number of customers, we have ample parking for cars and coaches, as well as disabled parking spaces close to the gift and garden centre entrance.

The business has been set up to offer the garden enthusiast everything they could possibly desire from plants to compost, fertilisers to garden furniture, garden lighting to outdoor ornaments.

A long-awaited coffee shop was added in 2005 and extended to meet demand a few years later.

The range of goods for sale has also changed over the years with hundreds of suppliers from plants to pet supplies, clothes to food as well as an amazing selection of gifts and homeware.

GardenFurniture - Sit back and relax with our large range of garden furniture. We have benches, rockers, chairs, dining table sets, picnic tables, swings, garden arches the list goes on.

All our furniture is flat packed but we can make it up for you and even deliver it for a small charge. Most of our furniture is wooden but we also have rattan sets perfect for entertaining. We have outdoor furniture covers, cushions, parasols, windbreakers, furniture stain and oil for your wooden furniture. Not forgetting our outdoor kiddies furniture.

Lighting – light up your garden for longer with our selection of solar lighting. No need for an electrician or worrying about where the nearest plug is, just put your solar lighting where you want and watch the sun work its magic. From good old fashioned stake lights to spot lights. We even have decorative lighting from stunning string lights to light up lanterns.

Pots and Planters – Wooden Barrels? Plastic Troughs? Ceramic Planters? Feeds and Weeds - We have everything from leading brands like Miracle-gro to Weedol, Growmore to Roundup we have everything to feed and weed your garden. Easy to use granules, liquid concentrate, ready to use, we have something for you.

Lawn care - with the lawn being the main focal of any garden you need to take care of them, from feed and weeds to grass seed, patch packs to lawn sand we have the lot to keep your lawn in tip top condition. Get a greener lawn today!

If we do not stock a product that you are looking for, we will do our best to order it in for you.

Bird houses / nest boxes – we have a huge selection of houses and nest boxes for all types of birds made from FSC timber and come in many different styles and colours to encourage birds into your garden. They are easy to put up with lots of different decorative designs. Whether it is blue tit nest boxes or multi nest boxes we have the house for you.

Wild bird treats – help the wild birds and provide them with essential energy throughout the year with our choice of treats, from fat balls to suet pellets, mealworms to suet filled pine cones.

Wildlife – bring more nature into your garden with a choice of insect houses, great for ladybirds, bees and other insects. We also carry a small amount of hedgehog and squirrel food and houses.

Coffee ShopThe coffee shop would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our customers - past, present and future. As a well-established addition of Happy Plant Garden Centre in Mintlaw, our aim is to offer our customers the opportunity to relax in our friendly and relaxing coffee shop, whilst enjoying a selection of top quality refreshments. All of our food is locally sourced and freshly prepared daily.

The Coffee Shop is run on a self-service basis, but if you need help, please ask. Our staff will be happy to assist you.

In order to be of assistance to our disabled customers, there is a wide ramp up to the entrance of the coffee shop. The furniture is designed to allow the occupants of wheelchairs to be seated comfortably at the table. There are also disabled toilets complete with easy grip rails.

Drinks - need to quench that thirst after all that shopping? Why not get one of our trained Barista staff to make you a flavoured latte? We have soooo many to choose from! Or why not have a good old cup of tea? We also make coffees, espressos, cappuccinos, luxury hot chocolates with marshmallows, cream and sprinkles mmmmmmm. All of our coffee is made with Fairtrade and Organic coffee beans. Of course, we have a fridge full of cold drinks.

Light Bites - we have a large range of freshly made sandwiches, toasties, paninis and jacket potatoes with an array of fillings from chicken mayo, bacon, brie & cranberry, prawns and lots more all served with side salad, crisps and coleslaw.

Breakfast - why not set yourself up for the day with one of our breakfast, served from 9.30 to 11.30. You can go for the full works, sausages, bacon, tattie scone, tomato, beans, mushrooms, black pudding, egg, toast or why not try one of our breakfast rolls with a choice of fillings and wash it all down with a refreshing glass of orange juice.

Lunch - all of our food is freshly prepared each day. We have daily Hotplate Specials that can be anything from homemade steak pie to good old fashioned macaroni cheese, beef olives to succulent chicken and gravy. We also serve two homemade soups every day and have a range of fresh oven baked bread and rolls to have with your soup.

Vegan / Vegetarian - we now have an extensive menu everyday. Enjoy a Vegan soup followed by a delicious Quinoa Burger or jackfruit curry plus many more options all served with side salad & vegan coleslaw.

Cakes - Our cakes are made fresh on the premises daily. We make everything from shortbreads, doodle bugs, fudge, tiffin, cupcakes, scones, the list is endless! Cannot decide which one to choose? The business is run by Pauline Smith who worked as a primary school teacher in and around the North East of Scotland for over 15 years. It was whilst teaching that her interest in outdoor learning grew.

Whilst continuing to teach, she retrained in garden and landscape design and in 2015 passed with a distinction.

Her experience as a teacher gives Pauline a unique insight into what schools and children need from their playground and the role the outdoors has in teaching, learning and play.

Since establishing Urban Green Design, Pauline has been involved in some fantastic projects, working with nurseries and schools, elderly care-homes, community projects and many residential properties across the North East.

“I retrained because I wanted to work with schools, helping them to improve their playgrounds. But knowing just how important being outdoors is for both physical and mental health, I just want to get everyone outside, children and grown-ups – that’s what I’m passionate about.”

INITIAL MEETINGThe process starts with an initial meeting where Pauline will talk about what it is that you want from your garden, as well as any strong likes or dislikes that you might have. Pauline will also discuss any existing problems that your garden might have and advise you on possible solutions.

This initial meeting usually takes around an hour and is a free no obligation service.

DESIGN BRIEFShe will then go away and prepare a design brief based on what was discussed. The design brief will outline the concept for the garden, as well as details about features to be included, preferred materials etc and if known, information about the budget and time frame for the project.

This will be sent to you along with a fixed price quote for any other services you wish, Pauline will ask you to confirm before she proceeds.

SITE SURVEYIf you choose to go ahead, the next stage would be to carry out a site survey so that a scaled site plan can be produced.

OUTLINE PLANSAnother meeting will be arranged to discuss draft ideas and design sketches. These would then be firmed up into the final plan.

FINAL PLANThe final plan will show both hard and soft landscaping ideas and placement of desired features. They will be presented to you using a mixture of hand-drawn sketches and computer-generated images to help give you a real sense of how the garden will look upon completion.

If required, Pauline can also produce planting plans will which will show details of planting including heights, spreads and recommended colours to achieve the desired look and feel for the new garden, taking into consideration the aspect of the beds, soil type and the level of maintenance required, so the garden looks at its best throughout the year.

If you thought the day of the traditional butcher was over, then think again. Ingram’s is a small family farm specialising in the production of the finest quality Pork from their farm in Aberdeenshire.

Established in 1994, as a pig farm they sought to offer the public a greater quality of pork. In 1999, they began producing their own bacon and sausages, right here on their farm in Newburgh.

Their pigs are cared for through every step of the process from farm to fork. Produced under the highest welfare standards, being fed with cereal produced on farm and bedded using their own straw.

Ingram’s sausages are hand made using a minimum of 80% lean pork, natural skins are carefully selected and seasoned, providing their customers with high quality sausages.

They like to keep their fresh cuts of pork as fresh as possible and believe pork should not be hung for any length of time and never exceed hanging their pork for more than 7 days.
