The e f f ec t o f l i gh t i ng l eve l and room deco r on i n t e rpe r sona l communica t i on was

invest iga ted . Aro usa l and c om for t models were invoke d to genera te hypothe ses tha t

(a) br ighter l igh t ing would s t imula te m ore genera l comm unica t ion , (b) lower l igh t ing

leve ls would encourage more in t imate communica t ion , (c ) over t ime, lower l igh t

l eve l s wou ld dampen bo th gene ra l and i n t ima t e communica t i on , and (d ) home- l i ke

decor would encour / tge more genera l and more in t imate communica t ion . In a 2 x 2

be tween-subjec ts design , pa i r s o f female f r iends wrote two le t te rs to one ano ther in

bright vs. soft l ight ing and off ice-l ike vs. home-l ike decor. All the hypotheses were

conf i rmed, except tha t br ighter l igh t encouraged more ra ther than less in t imate

communica t i on .
