Think different, adopt different PETstock North Lakes takes the lead for National Pet Adoption Day

On Saturday February 15, PETstock North Lakes will play host to its local animal rescue organisation as part of National Pet Adoption Day, an initiative of PETstock's charity PETstock Assist with support from event partner PetRescue.

The past five Adoption Days have found homes for nearly 3,000 animals across Australia, and this year PETstock Assist is aiming to find forever homes for another 1,000 rescue pets across its 145 stores. Olympian, television personality and animal rescue advocate Giaan Rooney is also supporting the init iative this year, encouraging Australians to adopt not shop for pets.

Giaan, who grew up raising rescues, is urging Australians to adopt different in 2020; to adopt a new way of thinking when it comes to animal adoption and consider a pet they haven't before.

"It was love at first sight with my most recent rescue, Lester," she says.

"Despite being one leg short, Lester was the perfect dog: obedient, easy to train, loving and grateful. He gave me so much and wanted so little in return. His passing last year still makes me tear up today.

"Our family will certainly be rescuing again when we're ready for a new pet and I encourage all would-be owners looking for a pet to consider adoption."

PETstock Assist Charity and Events Coordinator, Jess Guilfoyle, says 'Adopt Different' is a call to would-be owners to think differently about adopting a pet.

"We want people to be open to different types of animals and breeds, to make considered and sustainable choices, and to give rescue pets a chance at a better life," she says.

"Contrary to popular belief many animals are surrendered to rescue groups through no fault of their own. Like little Lester, who was surrendered after suffering a broken leg requiring medical attention and amputation.

"We're encouraging all animal-lovers to attend Adoption Day on February 15, to meet pets in need, educate themselves on adoption and reconsider any biases they may have towards rescue animals.

“All pets deserve a safe and loving forever home and through initiatives like this we h o p e to b re a k t h e c yc l e of p et homelessness."

PetRescue Co-Founder, Vickie Davy, has seen firsthand the incredible bonds that form when new owners open their mind and adopt different.

"A lot of people start their search for a new pet with a certain type, breed, or age in mind. However, your perfect match might not be the pet you think," she says.

“If you have your hands full with kids, an older, more settled dog or cat may be a far better fit than a young, energetic puppy. Or, if it's your child's first pet, a smaller animal such as a guinea pig or reptile may be a better option and a great introduction to the responsibility of pet ownership.” Rescue pets receive extensive training and behavioural assessments before being rehomed, allowing potential owners to make an informed decision on the right pet for their lifestyle.

PETstock Assist is a registered charity committed to making a long-term difference and positive change in the lives of pets and humans through education, awareness and donations. 100% of donations to PETstock Assist are donated to charities that share its mission. Since inception, PETstock Assist has microchipped more than 22,000 pets, found homes for more than 12,000 rescue pets, coordinated food drives to the value of $5 million and donated more than $3 million to charities including PetRescue, Guide Dogs, Assistance Dogs, Young Diggers, individual rescue groups and many more. PETstock Assist donates directly to all rescue groups that participate in National Pet Adoption Day, which was more than $40,000 in 2019.

Q&A with Giaan Rooney- Ambassador for PETstock National Adoption Day Why are you passionate about adoption? I have always had rescue animals, including Lester and four rescue cats. Every animal I've had the honour of rescuing knew it had been given a second chance and had plenty of love to give.

What makes rescue pets so special? I honestly believe every rescued animal knows it has been lucky to find its forever home. They know they have been given a second chance at a happy life. For owners, adoption means families can find the perfect fit for them. The rescue group can give you an overview of the animal's behaviour and personality so you know exactly what you're getting – great for those wanting an animal but who may not have time for a young and energetic pet.

What was Lester like? Lester was quite terrified of small children when he first came to me (understandable considering his leg was run over by a child on a bike and resulted in amputation). However, he soon learnt that not all kids are out to hurt him. When my first 'human' child was born, Lester was protective, curious and sweet right from the start, as he was again when the second came along. His favourite spot was on the bean bag, next to the sleeping baby where he could smell their head and snuggle.

What made Lester stand out? I first met Lester when he was being cared for by a vet at Lort Smith Animal Hospital. At their AGM, the vet was sharing Lester's unfortunate start to life when Lester began affectionally licking his hand for the entire 20-minute speech!

Afterwards I played with him and despite a few face plants as he got used to having three legs, he was such a happy little guy. It was love at first sight!

About Giaan A former darling of Australian Swimming, Giaan holds medals at every level of competition, including an Olympic Gold. In 2006, Giaan retired from swimming to forge a successful career as a TV presenter. Giaan is a passionate advocate of pet adoption, having been a long-time ambassador to Lort Smith Animal Hospital and rescuing five pets (and counting).

different. I have even offered to take up one of the sports he likes to watch (golf) with him but he says he is happy to just watch. I look at him and its flash back to the seventies. Nothing has changed except now the couch he sprawls on is leather instead of an orange horse hair futon and he is as wide as he is tall. Isn't life supposed to get better? Do I have to just dry up and shrivel away because he can't get out of his own way? Would you stay or go?

Merry/Rothwell

II hear a lot of resentment in your email and if I were you I think that I would take a practical approach in deciding whether to stay or go. By this I mean really having a good look at what is going on and examining each person's part in what is now your domestic reality. Have a reality check here and ask yourself; do I facilitate my husband's sedentary lifestyle by not investing in him. Have you really tried to get him to eat better, exercise and lose weight and engage with you socially? Have you told him that you find his body repugnant and suggested that he abandon his one shower a day rule. Have you told him that you need him to shave, groom himself and take pride in his appearance? Have you bought him body care products that you like the smell of and some nice clothes? Have you told him that you are so desperately unhappy in the marriage that you are considering leaving and asked h im to go to marr iage counselling? Another question that I think is worth asking is “Why have you stayed so long?” what has been the 'pay off' for you?

Were you frightened to go or held back by religious beliefs or parenting? I feel that it would be a good self reflection exercise for you to ask yourself these hard questions.

So having tried all this first, I would start with a good long talk to my husband and if he wouldn't talk I would write him a letter that describes your unhappiness and how you would like things to change.

If he states that he is not prepared to go to counselling, change or try to fix the issues in any way, and you truly find him this repulsive then I feel that leaving may be the answer. I see no reason for you to give up your dreams so that your husband can live his dream of watching TV til death comes a knocking. You may want to explore the idea of just travelling and socialising by yourself and leave your husband in front of his beloved sport. Or you may decide that you want a like minded companion to spend the remainder of your life with and start divorce proceedings. I would encourage you to give your marriage every chance before you walk away and in this way you will at least have the comfort of knowing that you truly tried everything before leaving. You never know, he may be so shaken up at the thought of divorce and all that this means that he take a shower and gets off the couch for good.

Hi Leonie,

I've been meaning to write in to you for some time so here it is. For ages, I have been thinking about leaving my husband. Just a bit of background - I have spent years flirting with the idea of just living life on my own terms. My husband is boring, very over weight with a huge girth and dreadful grooming that makes me embarrassed to be seen with him. He doesn't look after himself and spends any available time watching sport or races on TV. Any kind of sport will do and it makes me want to scream. He won't come to the markets or the movies or join any clubs. We are in our late fifties and I would dearly love to make friends our age but he says he is tired after work and he will just hit the couch and stay there. I look after myself and always try to look my best but my husband is disgusting, unshaven, and sweaty and lives in boardies and singlets. The other thing is his personal hygiene. He believes that we should only shower once a day regardless of daily activity. So this means that if he mows the lawn in the morning, he reeks all day. It's just horrible. I have moved into the spare room because he snores, breaks wind and sweats all night. I fantasise about living in a home where there is no droning background noise of races being called and horses being described and don't get me started on the constant football commentary. Nobody should have to live like this. We have two boys both long gone with their own families. I am feeling resentful, and lost. What have we been working for all these years? We have money, but he won't travel or go anywhere

‘till next week. Leonie

As parents, nothing in the world is more important to us than the happiness of our kids. Life is increasingly fast paced: rushing, pressures, checking smart devices constantly. All of these factors, without a doubt have an impact on our children. Like most parents, we do our best to create a positive and happy family environment. We are supportive and encourage our children on their journey through life.

We thought it would be great for the kids to wear t-shirts with positive quotes printed on them. We searched for some to buy, but we couldn't find any. So as a family we have decided to start making our own! This is our family project, at the dining table we work on this project together. We talk about positive words we use in our house (to build confidence and reduce anxiety etc). We love getting our kids involved with cutting and gluing to produce unique artwork. It encourages them to be proud of the product they have created. We then support a local family owned business to have our

quotes and home made art printed in small quantities on beautiful good quality soft cotton t-shirts. In addition to our regular colourful t-shirts, we are proud to also be offering the Empower Collection t-shirts for sale. 100% ethical ly produced t-shirts. T-shirts you can feel good about wearing, knowing that by purchasing them you are supporting positive changes in the world. We are hoping our t-shirt printing project can spread throughout the community. We would love to spread positivity and empowerment, while reducing screen time for kids, and allowing them to be creative. At 'By Kids For Kids' we are passionate about this project and we hope you will be too. Please contact us at any time with your thoughts and feedback. We would love to hear from y o u . For new university students with their heads buried in textbooks and screens, fresh-roasted coffee and an all-day breakfast menu can offer a welcome pick-me-up.

The first cohort of students at USC Moreton Bay will have the convenience of Brisbane roaster, retailer and supplier Bellissimo Coffee located on campus at Petrie.

Bellissimo Coffee, established in 2009 in Fortitude Valley, is the first external retailer confirmed for USC Moreton Bay.

Construction of the outlet is underway on campus at Petrie. It is due to open in February.

The company, which has won more than 150 industry awards, has developed a menu to cater for the campus needs of USC Moreton Bay.

USC Chief Operating Officer Dr Scott Snyder said USC Moreton Bay wanted its opening retailers to come to the campus with well-earned reputations for quality and the desire to serve local student and community needs.

“Bellissimo Coffee and then textbook and stationery supplier EduGear will form the first part of our dynamic retail strategy, with four tenancies available in our foundation building,” he said. “These will expand as the campus grows.”

Bellissimo Coffee owner Michael Koo said: “Bellissimo Coffee is excited to join the USC Moreton Bay campus and become part of a vibrant educational and cultural hub”.

“Our menu has been developed with nutritious, fresh, seasonal meals, fresh pastries and a range of house-baked sweets,” Mr Koo said. “Coffee will be served to our roastery level exacting standards.

“We are looking forward to serving high quality coffee and food to the students, staff and local community.”

EduGear is a pop-up textbook and stationery supplier that has been based at Brendale since 2009. It is owned by the Jarrl Family Trust and has been a Department of Education approved supplier to primary and secondary schools for the past eight years.

The North Lakes Women's Group is an organisation comprising of over 100 women who live in North Lakes, Mango Hill and surrounding suburbs. Most of our members are over fifty and are retired or working part time who enjoy the company of other women and who wish to participate in interesting activities and outings.

The Group meets every Tuesday morning. The first three Tuesdays our gatherings are held at the Corso Community Centre in North Lakes. On the fourth Tuesday we meet for a group lunch at a local restaurant, café, club or hotel. If there is a fifth Tuesday we have an outing. In the past we've done a tour of Parliament House, a boat cruise around Pumicestone Passage, a bus trip to Harbour Town, a bus trip to Maleny Dairy plus many more interesting outings.

YOUR STARSAquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You're worrying about the consequences of a recent decision? You're caught in a world of maybe's and could be's? Your social life will also liven up and this week brings reassuring news. Trust what you feel rather than what you think you should be feeling.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You've been feeling more shy than usual recently. Yet there's no reason to feel reserved...It's time to be proud of who you are. Draw on (and display) deep inner reserves of strength, bravery and fortitude that you sometimes forget exist.

Aries (March 21-April 19) When it comes to your career, study or volunteer work, keep on keeping on. If you put in 100% care and commitment then you’ll slowly reap the rewards. An opportunity to make a long-held dream come true arises. To follow a different path, some of the factors that fill your life are going to have to change.

Taurus (April 20-May 20) If you find yourself seemingly overreacting to a minor issue, you're probably having an appropriate response. A small problem holds the key to a larger one - and by solving the lesser one, you'll be able to find the way to easily sort out the more important issue.

Gemini (May 21-June 20) It’s time to be proactive about patching up partnership problems (romantic, platonic or business variety). But solutions will take a while to work and you’ll have to be doubly diplomatic and uncharacteristically patient.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) Close partnerships will be a minefield this week. And a tricky relationship (at home or work) will particularly test your patience and diplomatic skills. Trying to patch up a problem or rush a resolution won’t help. You’ll just have to pace yourself and be extra tolerant, perceptive and understanding. This week you get to enjoy a well-deserved reward for the determination you've shown in dealing with a difficulty.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) Expect a stop/start kind of week. You complete your to-do list and think things through, but you also take a calculated risk, as you stir things up via a professional pitch, a career change, a romantic detour or an innovative joint venture. Get talking and collaborating with your partner. Take the time to find out what they are thinking and how they are feeling.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Friendships look frustrating, as things move at a snail’s pace … or even slide backwards! Persistence and determination will win out in the end. It’s time to think outside the box. You're being presented with a special moment. Seize it this week, and make life magical. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) This is the perfect week for a quick catch-up with a friend or a spontaneous adventure with your partner. Expect big domestic changes this year. Some Librans will move or renovate; while others travel (or relocate) overseas. Don’t be in too much of a rush though … make sure you do all the research and planning that’s required

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) This is a complicated week and the intensity amps up. It’s a good time to contribute your substantial Scorpio talents to a worthy cause within your local community. Your confidence is slapped down when others criticize your performance in some way. And be extra careful what you say to a sensitive loved one. Plenty of patience (and a strong sense of self) will see you through.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) This week is the perfect time to finish an ambitious project with a fiery flourish! You need to be specific about what you want to achieve this week. You're absolutely right to hold out for what you want. If you bide your time and stay focused, what you need will come your way. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’ve got the power this week... just make sure you use it wisely. Trying to coerce or control others could lead to problems, so step back and reassess the situation. The more you try to assert your authority (especially with loved ones) the more unpredictable the week will be. Remember – you can’t be the boss all the time.

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland is proud to be part of an industry wide response to the devastation caused by the bushfires. “The REIQ has joined forces with a large group of real estate brands and peak bodies from within the Australian real estate community to support bushfire affected regions and wildlife, with our campaign, #BeyondtheBricks,” said REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella. In the few days since the campaign's launch, nearly thirty major franchise groups, along with the Real Estate Institutes (REIs) around Australia, have pledged nearly $900k to assist those suffering loss and disruption from these unprecedented bushfires. “We are deeply saddened by the devastating effects these fires have had across the country,” said Ms Mercorella. “But this is not a short term problem. "Along with immediate loss of property and livelihoods, communities will face ongoing challenges as they attempt to rebuild.”

The REIQ, along with many other real estate groups and stakeholders, has put together a comprehensive plan for the real estate industry to provide immediate financial assistance plus longer term support for these communities. “Beyond the Bricks is a three-phase plan to provide assistance not only during the crisis but to the communities most affected in the aftermath,” said Ms Mercorella. Phase 1 is to provide immediate financial relief and support to those most in need. Phase 2 is to help rebuild homes and lives, and Phase 3 is to help restore affected communities and provide ongoing support. There are multiple ways to get involved – you can donate directly or set up your own o f f i c e f u n d r a i s e r b y v i s i t i n g www.beyondthebricks.com.au/reiq
