Gi-Fi or Gigabit Wireless is the world's first transceiver integrated on a single chip that operates at 60GHz.It allows wireless transfer of audio and video data up to 5 gigabits per second within a range of 10 meters.
It was developed by the Melbourne University based laboratories of NICTA (National ICT Australia Limited), Australia’s Information and Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence.

Gi-Fi
o Transmission medium is required to carry data from a source to destination.
o This transmission can be wired or wireless.
o In wired transmission the signal can travel along the cable from one device to another.
Three types of cables• Twisted pair• Co-axial cables• Fiber optics
These wired transmission media used for shortest distances .They can transmit both audio and video signal.
These are used in telephone lines and cable TV’s etc.
Wireless Access:
It is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network through routers.
Eg: linksys
BLUETOOTH: It is useful when trasferring the data between two or
more devices that are nearer to each other when speed is not an issue.
• Bit rate is 800kbps.
WI-fi:
It is a wireless network that allows devices such as computers , laptops or smart phones to connect to a network via an access point.
WIMAX:
It is also wireless network provides bit rate of 30-40 Mbps.
HTC first announced wimax enabled mobile phones.
GI-FI means gigabit wireless.
Worlds first transceiver integrated on single chip.
Operates on 60ghz .
Allows wireless transfer of audio and video data at upto 5gb per second.
Gi-Fi is ten times the current maximum wireless transfer rate usually within a range of 10 meters.
The reason for pushing into GI-FI technology is because of
Slow data transfer rate
high power consumption
low range of frequency operation

Gigabit wireless: The GI-FI integrated wireless transceiver chip developed at the National ICT Research Centre, Australia –
The chip, just 5mm per side, has a tiny 1mm antenna.
The core components of a GI-FI system is the subscriber station which available to several access points .
It supports standard of IEEE 802.15.3C Wireless PAN
The wirelessspan is computer network used for communication among computer devices (including telephones and personal digital assistants) close to one person .
An 802.15.3c based system often uses small antenna at the subscriber station. The antenna is mounted on the roof.
It transmits multiple signals simultaneously across the wireless transmission paths within separate frequencies to avoid interfere.
It uses ultra wide band Which consists of :
a)High bit rate
b)High security
c)Faster data transmission
High speed of data transfer
Low power consumption
High security
Cost effective
Small size
a) Household appliances
b) Office appliances
c) Video information transfer
d) Huge data file transfer.
Due to less cost of chip so many companies are looking forward to launch with lower cost.
The Gi-Fi integrated transceiver chip is may be launched by starting of next year by NICTA,Australia will be first .
Within five years, we expect Gi-Fi to be the dominant technology for wireless networking. By that time it will be fully mobile,as well as providing low cost, high broadband access, with very high speed large files swapped within seconds which will develop wireless home and office of future.
