This new multi-level elementary school is attached to an existing middle/upper school . The building includes administrative offices, K-6 classrooms, a gymnasium, media center, commons, and full kitchen . The façade evokes elements of the town’s historic 1920’s

school building and integrates them with contemporary forms and materials . I was the primary Design Technician on this project during schematic design and played a central role on the design team throughout the design and construction management process .

make up the exterior while the interior features solid white oak trim and paneling . I served on the design team for this project from the initial sketches to final completion .

JUST LOCAL FOOD COOPERATIVELocation: Eau Claire, WI | Type: Retail Grocery/Café | Proposed Design | Size: 9,200 sq . ft .

DESIGN TEAMGraham Hanson, Lead Designer/Project ManagerSteven Gausman, Design Consultant

This proposed design is for a growing local and organic foods cooperative in

western Wisconsin . Because the cooperative supports dozens of local farms

in the area, a timber framed barn provided a functional, flexible, and apropos

concept . The design features a building envelope of structural insulated panels

with a large timber trellis providing shaded outdoor seating for customers .

The open main level provides ample market space with a second floor loft for

administrative offices and a teaching kitchen . As the Lead Designer on this

project, I produced 100% of the schematic design and presentation documents .

DESIGN TEAMSteven Gausman, Project ArchitectRobert Krzyzanowski, Project ManagerGraham Hanson, Design Technician/Project AssistantKris Gausman, Graphic Designer/Colorization

This project included an in-depth study of emergency operations and existing facilities for the Mt . Horeb Fire Department as well as a proposed design for a new fire station . The Village of Mt . Horeb has several prominent buildings inspired by traditional Scandinavian architecture . As an added design challenge, the fire department

requested that the new station integrate some of these design elements . The flying dragon motif appears on several buildings in the village . I served as the primary editor for the facility study and drew the presentation drawings .

MOD 1 TABLE

FURNITURE DESIGN DESIGN TEAMGraham Hanson, Lead Designer/FabricatorSteve Gausman, Design Consultant

Designed and fabricated as a prototype for a new line of furniture, this table uses Richlite, a high-quality composite material made from paper and resin, and stainless steel cables to create a light and durable product . I strove to create a design that would be rugged, lightweight, made from recycled content, and itself recyclable . The design uses simple mortise and tenon joinery and requires no

fasteners other than the cables . This design can be easily manu-factured with CNC machinery, requires no additional finishes, ships in a thin box, and can be assembled using a single allen wrench . With small modifications, the design can be easily adapted to other types of furniture . Because both the Richlite and stainless steel are moisture resistant, the furniture can also be used outdoors .

FURNITURE DESIGN

CHERRY TABLEI adapted this simple, modernist design from a photograph in a magazine . My adaptation uses thick, hand-planed planks of cherry and is assembled with simple cross-dowel bolts . The table is finished with natural beeswax that highlights the wood’s beautiful grain .
