33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - NOVEMBER 15, 2015

GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES “It’s going to get worse before it gets better” is a phrase that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional en-ergy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that some-thing better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point toward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world.

Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by

imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on DECEMBER 13TH.

Two weeks ago, I published the names of the 22 persons who form the Capital Campaign Cabinet. Now, I am pleased to announce the Honorary Chairpersons. I am very grateful for these individuals who have already made substantial donations to the Holy Spirit Building Fund; their support gives great momentum to this Capital Campaign.

These are the Honorary Chairpersons for Holy Spirit’s Capital Campaign, “Building God’s House, Our Home” — Cindy and Gary Ellis, Ellis Island, Chanela Farms Winery Vicki Fertitta, Station Casinos Jimmy Kimmel, Comedian, Talk Show Host Heather and Jim Murren, MGM Resorts International

From the FAQs, here’s the 3rd question and answer:

Q. Why do we need a worship space? Why can’t we continue to worship in the BGHS cafeteria? A. We need a worship space in order to better celebrate liturgies in a sacred place. Read this quote from Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship paragraphs 16 & 18, published November 16, 2000. “Just as the term Church refers to the living temple, God's People, the term church also has been used to describe ‘the building in which the Christian community gathers to hear the word of God, to pray together, to receive the sacraments, and celebrate the Eucharist.’ That building is both the house of God on earth (domus Dei) and a house fit for the prayers of the saints (domus ecclesiae). Such a house of prayer must be expressive of the presence of God and suited for the celebration of the sacrifice of Christ, as well as reflective of the community that celebrates there. Churches, therefore, must be places "suited to sacred celebrations," "dignified," and beautiful. Their suitability for worship is determined by their ability through the architectural design of space and the application of artistic gifts to embody God's initiative and the community's faithful response. Church buildings and the religious artworks that beautify them are forms of worship themselves and both inspire and reflect the prayer of the community as well as the inner life of grace. Conversely, church buildings and religious artifacts that are trivial, contrived, or lack beauty can detract from the community's liturgy. Architecture and art become the joint work of the Holy Spirit and the local community, that of preparing human hearts to receive God's word and to enter more fully into communion with God.”

This past summer, I received the amazing o p p o r t u n i t y o f traveling to Jamaica for Holy Spirit’s Mustard Seed mission trip. From the moment I arrived at Sophie’s Place, the residence we stayed at in Kingston, Jamaica, I

knew I was taking part in something very special. The Aunties, who work at the homes and take care of the residents, really impacted me in a large way. Their positivity and selflessness provided me inspiration to lead my life with a similar outlook. Every night after we fed the boys and girls at Sophie’s Place, the prayers led by the Aunties touched my heart with their genuine love. The happiness in all of the residents in the Mustard Seed houses was also truly influential to me. Seeing people who have so little, yet who are so joyful opened my eyes to all the blessings I have in my life, big and small. I definitely learned not to take anything for granted, and to express my gratitude to others. We also worked on other projects, which gave me the joy of accomplishing something that impacted people and brought them happiness. We took part in projects like painting walls, clearing fields, and spending hours taking staples out of and sanding church pews. Although tiresome, participating in this work as a team strengthened new friendships and helped me exercise patience and selflessness. Overall, this positive experience has led me to grow a love for serving others and an inspiration to continue this passion in my everyday life. ~ Gretta Von Tobel
