Going to school on their own, exploring the neighbourhood with friends after school, or simply meeting up to play – primary school age children are often out and about on their own for the first time. For longer journeys, we recom-mend going by tram, bus, ferry or hillside railway. In this issue you’ll find out what children should be looking out for when travelling on their own and what you can do to ensure your child stays safe.

We also tell you how you can now take out manage your subscription online, who answers your Facebook and Twitter questions, what’s on this autumn and how our yellow fleet can get you there.

We want to hire a vintage Büssing for a family occasion. Can we do that?

Yes, you can hire our vintage buses for private events or company parties.

Hire tariffs differ depending on the vehicle and the length of the trip. The Büssing – one of the oldest well-preserved buses of its kind in Europe – is one of the vehicles in our hire fleet. But because of its advancing years, it can only be hired for journeys within the city of Dresden, e.g. for weddings. Please book well in advance as our vintage vehicles are extremely popular. I currently have an annual pass for Dresden. Is it true that these are being abolished from 2018?

Yes, that’s right. From 2018 we will no longer be offering annual passes valid

from January to December. The only diffe-rences between the annual pass and the sub-scriber’s monthly pass were the method of payment and the price, so we have decided to offer the subscriber’s pass with a choice of monthly or annual payment from now on. It can then be taken out for any 12-month period. If you opt to pay annually, you don’t need to provide personal details when taking out your subscription. The subscriber’s monthly pass for 12 months will therefore replace the annual pass which was only valid for a calendar year. The reason we are doing

this is to simplify the range of tickets offered by the VVO. The only difference between the new and old version: because of the Europe-an Central Bank’s zero interest rate policy we can no longer offer a discount on annual pas-ses paid for in full in advance. This discount was previously financed from the interest we earned on revenues, but because we have not earned any interest on them for some years now, it is no longer economically viable for us to continue to offer this discount. However, you can still save 15% on the price of a stan-dard monthly pass by paying in advance.

Can someone else use my Jobticket when I am not using it?

The Jobticket is valid for you as the ticket holder 24 hours a day, but

between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays it can only be used in conjunction with valid ID. In other words, it is non-trans-ferable at these times and cannot be used by anyone else. At all other times the Jobticket can be lent to other people.* So apart from the time restrictions from Monday to Friday, the Jobticket has the same advantages as any other monthly ticket. For example, you can take a bicycle or a dog with you at any time. At weekends and on public holidays, your Jobticket also entitles you to take along one extra adult and up to four children aged up to 15 from 6 p.m. the day before until 6 a.m. the day after.

* The concessionary Jobticket for trainees is

non-transferable and does not entitle anyone

else to travel with you.

Teaching children about mobility

Practice makes perfect

This also applies to using public transport. In Saxony the new school year started on 7 August. Legally speaking, children can travel on VVO trains, trams, buses, hillside railways and ferries without being accompanied by an adult from the age of six. But whether your child is ready for that is something only you can judge. A good sign is if your child expresses the wish to do so themselves. Take plenty of time to go through the journey with them and explain the rules they will need to follow. Children feel more confident and secure if they know exactly which routes they can take, where to board, when to change, and when to get off.

Arriving safely

Children usually learn the main principles of road safety in preschool and, most importantly, from you, their parents or grandparents. But there are also certain rules your child needs to know to ensure they arrive at their destination safely.

Get to the bus stop in good time. Make sure your child leaves the house

on time. Children who have to rush to the bus or tram stop don’t pay enough attention to other road users. What’s more, if they get to the stop in good time, they won’t miss their bus or tram.

The journey to school is often the first opportunity children get to travel anywhere on their own. It’s quite an adventure, particularly for first year pupils or children changing schools. These journeys can’t always be done on foot or by bike. Public transport is a good alternative and is one of the safest ways of getting from A to B

can help your child by teaching them about

road safety from an early age.

how dangerous it is to hang or swing from the handrails. Your child should be able to sit or stand securely, particularly when the vehicle is pulling away, travelling round corners or braking.

Press the stop request button. When your child wants to get off, they

should press the stop request button as soon as the vehicle has left the previous stop. The words “Wagen hält” (Bus stopping) will appear in the display to indicate that their request has been registered.

Look out for cars and cyclists when alighting.

Other road users don’t always pay attention to passengers getting out of buses and trams. Teach your child to be aware of traffic when alighting from a bus or tram. A quick glance in both directions is generally enough.

Never cross the road in front of or behind a stationary bus or tram.

When your child gets out of the bus or tram, they should never cross the road straight away. They should always wait until the bus or tram has moved off so that they can see whether the road is clear.

Stand back from the kerb or platform edge.

The ideal distance is two large steps back from the kerb or platform edge. At many stops this is marked with white rippled paving stones. Explain to your child that it is dangerous to sit on the kerb or platform edge or to play tag at the stop as they can easily slip onto the road or tracks.

Let passengers off first before boarding.

The best place for your child to wait to board a bus or tram is to the side of the door. Allow passengers to get off before boarding. This avoids pushing and shoving and enables everyone to get on and off faster and without falling. Your child should also have their ticket ready so that they can show it or have it stam-ped straight away after boarding and don’t block the entrance area while they look for it.

Move down the vehicle, find a seat, hold on tight.

If possible, children should be seated in our vehicles. Ask your child to carry their school bag on their lap or put it between their feet so that it doesn’t cause a trip hazard or take up space needed by other passengers. Show your child where and how to hold on if there are no seats available. Please also explain

We know the traffic situation in Dresden and the surrounding area inside out. So we offer a range of road safety education options to encourage children to become safe and con-fident road users. We put a lot of effort into making these events fun for the children and arouse their curiosity so that they remember what they have learned.

Preschool

DVB Discovery Tour

On a project day in the tram museum, pre-school children will learn through play about the history of our company and the rules of behaviour and will be introduced to our mo-dern vehicle fleet and equipment. The focus will be on practical aspects such as having your ticket validated or how to hold on tight when the tram brakes suddenly. Enquiries: marketing@dvbag.de.

As traffic and mobility education forms part of the school curriculum in Saxony, we offer a range of teaching materials, worksheets and learning concepts:

Aufgepasst! – Kinder unterwegs

This project for first-year children, which translates as “Watch out – children on the move”, is a joint campaign by the Dresden Police and our driving school. In the theo-retical part, we teach the children the basics of travelling by public transport, car and bicycle and the proper way to behave as a pedestrian. In the practical part, the children learn and practice how to behave safely and

Do’s and don’ts on the bus and tram

Eating and drinking

Everyone is hungry after school. But eating and drinking is not permitted on any of our trams or buses. The smell is unpleasant for other passengers and if the vehicle brakes suddenly, food or drink could spill onto other people’s clothes or onto the floor or seats.

Music and mobile phones

All passengers should behave in a way that does not disturb their fellow passengers. Chil-dren and young people like to listen to music. And we don’t mind that, as long as it isn’t so loud that the person sitting next to them can hear every note, and as long as the person listening to the music can still hear what’s going on around them. The same applies to making phone calls and chatting to friends.

Seats

The safest place in a bus or tram is a seat. So children should always be seated if possible, even if they aren’t travelling far. But if an older

On 16 and 17 September it’s all about steam at Lößnitzgrundbahn, when Sächsische Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft (SDG), the Traditionsbahn Radebeul-Radeburg and the VVO put on a magnificent display of steam engines at the Narrow-gauge Railway Festival. Trains have been running from Radebeul Ost station through the Lößnitzgrund, along the vineyards and past Moritzburg Palace to Radeburg since as long ago as 1884. Also making an appearance will be the Rabe-nauer Rußhörnchen, SDG’s mascot, with his mates Mobilius from the VVO and the Lößnitz dachshund, who will be waiting at Moritzburg station with a play park and lots of fun activities. The 26th edition of the Prohlis Autumn Festival is taking place from 15 to 17 September. The festival will open at around 5 p.m. on the Friday afternoon. In the car park outside the Prohlis Centre you’ll find exciting fairground rides, a wide range of stalls and an attractive stage programme, as well as the DVB bouncy castle and a bus and tram themed crafts stall. On the Saturday, don’t miss the half-hourly guided tours of the Reick depot between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Our children’s tram, Lottchen, will also be running a special short tour of the depot grounds, leaving from the Prohlis tur-ning loop. You can board at any stop as long as there are seats available.

“Hi DVB, I’m at the Jüngststraße tram stop waiting for the no. 6. Have I missed it?” “Good morning, Peter. The no. 6 will be with you in one minute. Have a pleasant journey.” Questions like these are child’s play for our Social Media team members. Based at the control centre, they have up-to-the-minute access to bus and tram service statuses. The team – that’s Caroline, Tina, Beate and Christin – are operatives in the Customer Service department. Among their duties

A lost doll, the right ticket, a helpful driver, the best route: every day dozens of passengers contact our Customer Service department for a wide variety of reasons. And with our online channels you can ask your question whenever and wherever you like.

to Thursdays and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. We aim to answer every query as quickly as possible, but no later than within 24 hours. Occasionally our operatives may receive a difficult or technically complex query that has to be referred to a particular department, in which case it might take slightly longer to answer. “We want to provide our customers with answers they will be happy with. In that case, it’s not a question of how quickly we can answer but the quality of the information we give them,” explains Tina, who has been handling our Facebook queries since 2012. “If we have to pass on a question to someone else, we always let the asker know.” Finding the right person to forward technical queries to is second nature to Tina and her colleagues.

Sometimes they also have tricky situations to deal with. “When something has gone very wrong and an annoyed passenger simply wants to let off steam, you do need a thick skin,” Tina says. “And you need to be tactful too,” Christin. “In those cases, facts and rational arguments aren’t enough: you need to be able to find the right words and put yourself in the passenger’s shoes.”

But it’s not just a case of rising above things and placating people with words. “You have to like people and you need to have a positive attitude to life,” Caroline says with a smile. Beate adds: “Complaints from customers are part of what we do. You learn not to take them personally and how to handle them

Wilder Mann There is still a lot of speculation today as to how this area of Dresden got its name. Legend has it that towards the end of the 30 Years’ War the Saxon Elector Johann Georg was attacked by Croatian mercenaries in the woods on the Trachenberg hills. He was said to have been freed by a bearded figure. As a mark of gratitude, a vineyard was planted at the spot and named “Zum wilden Mann”. The “Wilder Mann” inn actually existed and was popular with day trippers right up until the end of the 19th century. The building was used as a reserve military hospital during World War II, and after 1945 it housed the district party school of East Germany’s Socialist Unity Party. In 1969 it was turned into a television studio for East German Television and later MDR (Central German Radio). But the surrounding area and the tram terminus retained the name. Großenhainer Platz

The parish of St Petri was created on 29 March 1881 as a separate parish in the Leipziger Vorstadt district. There was no church to be-gin with, so worshippers had to hold their services in a sports hall on Konkordienstraße. The foundation stone for the new St Petri church on Großenhainer Straße was finally laid on 15 May 1889. The brick church was built in the neo-Gothic style and has a 68 metre tower.

Carolaplatz At Carolaplatz you’ll find Sarassanistraße, where in 1912 Europe’s first ever and most modern permanent circus building was ope-ned. The building was destroyed in the Allied bombing raids on Dresden in 1945 and was never rebuilt. Today, all that remains of the

former circus is the Sarassani fountain on Carolaplatz. The nearby Neustädter

Markt market hall opened on 7 October 1899 and is one of

Dresden’s three large market halls which took the place

of the weekly markets that were stopped

Down the line – on tram no. 3 from Wilder Mann to Coschütz

in 1893. These market halls were also partially destroyed during the war. Following major renovation work, the listed market hall was reopened as a shopping centre in 2000.

On a historical journeyLine 3 from Trinitatisfriedhof to Dresden central

station via Gerokstraße, Amalienstraße, Pirnaischen

Platz and Prager Straße was inaugurated on 2 May

1898. The route officially became known as line 3

when line numbers were introduced in 1906. It was

extended beyond Großenhainer Straße to Wilder

Mann in 1928. After the war, the new line 3 leading

from Tolkewitz to Hainsberg was built in 1949. Line 3

has run from Wilder Mann to Plauen since 1974 and

was extended to Coschütz in 1999. This north/south

line connects the two sides of the River Elbe and

follows Münchner Straße via the Nürnberger Ei as it

heads towards Coschütz. So it is very popular with

students, earning it the nickname “Studentenlinie”

(students’ line). The extra services put on during

term time are particularly popular with Tatra fans as

Tatra rolling stock is brought out for use on the E3

from Plauen to the Trachenberge depot.

KottewegHere you’ll find the 30 metre high Fichteturm. This tower was built in 1896 and is the oldest Bismark tower in Saxony. It was given its present-day name in 1954 in memory of the Saxon philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte. On a clear day, the visitor platform at the top of the castellated round tower offers a wonderful view as far as the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It is accessed via a granite spiral staircase with 153 steps.

CoschützThe Coschütz district is in the south-west of Dresden and is well-known as the home of the Feldschlösschen Brewery. The turning loop was opened in 1971. The A 17 motorway runs under-neath it in a tunnel completed in 2004. This tunnel consists of two bores passing under Coschütz for a length of 2332 metres. Along with the two-car-riageway, four-lane Weißeritztalbrücke and the Dölzschen tunnel, this was the most expensive and most difficult section of the new A 17.

Walpurgisstraße Walpurgisstraße is the stop to alight at for Dresden’s circular cinema. This cinema was built as part of the reconstruction programme in Dresden’s city centre. The round building was designed to contrast with the rectangular buildings surroun-ding it and is regarded as one of the most important post-war modernist buildings in Dresden. The Prager Straße Film Theatre opened in it on 7 October 1972. The circular cinema gained listed status in autumn 2003.

occupation and the early years of the German Democratic Republic. The building was built in 1907 as the Royal Saxon Regional Court and served as courthouse, jail and execution site. The last execution was carried out here under the East German justice system in 1956. Today the Georg Schumann Building is used by the Dresden University of Applied Sciences as a teaching facility. The basement of the former court building houses the perma-nent exhibition “Verurteilt. Inhaftiert. Hingerichtet. Politische Justiz in Dresden 1933-1945 // 1945-1957”.

SynagogeThe New Synagogue serving Dresden’s Jewish community has been located beside the epony-mous tram stop since 2001, replacing the former Old Synagogue built by Gottfried Semper. Exactly 60 years after its destruction during Kristallnacht, the Nazi pogrom against the Jews, the first sod was turned for the first new synagogue to be built on East German soil on 9 November 1998. The synagogue is at the head of Carolabrücke, the bridge named after Carola von Wasa-Holstein-Gottorp, the wife of King Albert. The original bridge was built between 1892 and 1895. It was blown up by the Waffen SS on 7 May 1945 but

given the extent of the damage it was decided not to restore the original bridge. The present-day Carolabrücke was built by VEB Brückenbau Dresden between 1967 and 1971.
