Early Wednesday morning, the Dalhart High School volleyball teams started their practices for the sea-son.

Freshmen, junior varsity and varsity players were up early and in the gym, running a variety of three minute drills under the watchful eye of head coach Kira Sat-terfield and her assistants.

“A great leader is a great servant,” Kira told the team. She reminded them that the effort they display dur-ing practices will impact how much they’ll play in the months ahead.

Kira encouraged the girls to communicate with each other, so they function better as a whole.

“If your grandma at the top of the stands can’t hear you, you’re not loud enough,” said seventh grade vol-leyball coach Brittany Rogers.

Overall, Kira seemed pleased with the first session. As the practice concluded, she had two seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen share the positives they had observed.

“I think we have a good chance in the district this year,” Kira said. While she noted that the district teams Dalhart will play didn’t get any easier, having some good players returning to the team is a plus.

“We have some hard-working up and comers, too,” Kira added.

The lesson of being a good servant in order to be a good leader is one Kira hopes the team learns quickly. “Once we truly understand that, we’ll move forward,” she said. “We don’t understand how good we can re-ally be.”

2018 Property Tax Rates in DALLAM-HARTLEY COUNTY HOSPITAL DISTRICT

This notice concerns 2018 property tax rates for DALLAM-HARTLEY COUNTY HOSPITAL DISTRICT. It presents information about three tax rates. Last year's tax rate is the actual rate the taxing unit used to determine property taxes last year. This year's effective tax rate would impose the same total taxes as last year if you compare properties taxed in both years. This year's rollback tax rate is the highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before taxpayers can start tax rollback procedures. In each case these rates are found by dividing the total amount of taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable property) with adjustments as required by state law. The rates are given per $100 of property value. Ncuv"{gct)u"vcz"tcvg< Last year's operating taxes $2,580,798 Last year's debt taxes $279,491 Last year's total taxes $2,860,289 Last year's tax base $1,634,450,928 Last year's total tax rate 0.175000/$100 Vjku"{gct)u"ghhgevkxg"vcz"tcvg<

Last year's adjusted taxes (after subtracting taxes on lost property) $2,860,289

= This year's effective tax rate 0.170200/$100 Vjku"{gct)u"tqnndcem"vcz"tcvg<

Last year's adjusted operating taxes (after subtracting taxes on lost property and adjusting for any transferred function, tax increment financing, state criminal justice mandate and/or enhanced indigent health care expenditures) $2,580,798

÷ This year's adjusted tax base $1,680,422,911 = This year's effective operating rate 0.153500/$100 ! 1.08 = this year's maximum operating rate 0.165700/$100 + This year's debt rate 0.016500/$100

= This year's rollback rate 0.182200/$100

Uvcvg!gpv"qh"Kpetgcug1Fgetgcug If DALLAM-HARTLEY COUNTY HOSPITAL DISTRICT adopts a 2018 tax rate equal to the effective tax rate of 0.170200 per $100 of value, taxes would increase compared to 2017 taxes by $ 34,697.

Then, the team enjoyed a breakfast provided by the players’ mothers.

Chocolate milk was a big request for the breakfast, with plenty of bottles on the buffet table, with orange juice and water, as well. Home-made breakfast bur-ritos, cinnamon rolls, muffins and fruit rounded out the meal.

The volleyball teams will hold twice-daily practices over the course of the next week, preparing for their first game on Tuesday, and tournaments next week even before school starts on August 15.

Youngsters discover the wonders of electricityJulie A. FerrAro

Dalhart Texan

The last summer class at Frank Phillips College took place earlier this week, with youngsters aged 8 to 14 learning about electricity.

Danny Nicholson taught Monday’s class, but an emergency prevented him from continuing on Tues-

day, so Barbie Walker and Kenzie Trimble stepped in to lead the students through the process of building a model boat with a working electric motor.

The process of reading and following directions also played a huge role in Tuesday’s class, including mea-suring copper wire, and placing the parts carefully, so they would not break.

Skye Currey, 9, enjoyed the chance to build “the

CHURCH OF CHRIST1013 East 10th.

SOME THINGS THAT SAVEThere are number of things by which we are saved. This writing makes us aware of some things that save.1) GOD SAVES. Paul taught that God “will have all men to be saved” (1 Tim. 2:3-4). God Himself said, “Look unto me and be ye saved” (Is. 45:22).2) CHRIST SAVES. It was said the virgin Mary, “And she shall bring forth a son, and though shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Mat. 1:21). The reason Christ came was “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk. 19:10).3) GRACE SAVES. Ephesians 2:8 teaches, “For by grace are ye saved...” Grace is unmerited favor. Titus was told, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men” (Ti. 2:11).4) FAITH SAVES. Jesus declared, “for if ye belive not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (Jn. 8:24). The Hebrew wrtier penned, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Heb. 11:6).If all these things save (and they do, by the way), then you can surely see that we’re not saved by faith or anything else alone.

ObservationsThis being my first go-round with the

XIT Rodeo and Reunion, I’m bound to discover new information, even after pulling together all the stories for the XIT special section which came out ear-lier this week.

In my innocence – if you will – I thought the XIT directors actually dug the pits where the meat is cooked for the World’s Largest Free BBQ themselves!

(Yes, that would be a lot of physical labor, but those are nine healthy, strap-ping guys!)

I didn’t realize the XIT Queen contest involved horseback riding.

(None of the other pageants I’ve cov-ered in my newspaper career have re-quired that component.)

While photographing last weekend’s Junior Rodeo and Team Roping events, I never knew how many steers it takes to put on such an event.

(And, just how did those steers know, when the chute at one end of the arena was opened, to move in a line all the way to the gate at the other end, without be-ing led?)

I never knew so many children like to ride stick horses and compete in events like the “big kids.”

H a v i n g spoken with some of the spectators, I never re-alized gen-e r a t i o n after gener-ation main-tained the tradition of participa-tion in the rodeo and supported the entire event.

The num-ber of volunteers, both individuals and organizations, who will be on the serv-ing lines for the free feeds, or at the pa-rade and many events this weekend, are to be commended for their community spirit and willingness to give so freely of their time and talent.

I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.

But, then, I’m from Indiana.I like it here better.

Julie A Ferraro

Hard to believe that it is almost time for school to start. Wednesday, August 15, school will be in ses-sion.

Way back when I was in school, the first day of school was always in September.

I get a lot of traffic, car and walkers where I live, just a half block from the intermediate school. I visited with our new superintendent at the recent meeting of the Dalhart Area Child Care Center. The meeting held July 25 was his first meeting. I asked how he was lik-ing Dalhart and he said he liked it.

Today, the 82nd XIT Rodeo and Reunion is under-way. The watermelon feed was yesterday, with the pork chop feed tonight and of course the big one – the barbeque - Saturday evening. I hope everyone - visitors and Dalhart residents - have and had a great XIT.

Other than that not much going on except the parents and kids getting set to start school and, of course, the teachers. Time flies when you’re having fun, I have always heard. The older I get, that time flies faster.

KurTiS ABlA

Life is full of challenges and struggles that often leave us either bitter and frus-trated or better and stronger. The out-come just depends on how we decide to approach those difficult circumstances and life storms. Life can be a bully as it seems to pick on us and leave us won-dering what just happened.

No, don’t feel extra special just be-cause you got picked on by an unevent-ful circumstance; life picks on all of us. So, what can we do to be overcomers and survive life’s storms?

As a pastor and a public servant in the education system, I am constantly reminded that relationships and com-munity are instrumental in overcoming turbulent times and making the best of this journey we call life. I recently came across this illustration from Mark Gregston, founder of Heartlight Minis-tries.

“Perhaps you recall the Biosphere II experiment 20 or so years ago? Several scientists were sealed in a huge glass bio-dome in the Arizona desert to see if life could be sustained in a similar facil-ity in outer space. There was one unex-pected result from that experiment. As trees were grown in this seemingly ‘per-fect’ environment, with sun and water and good soil, they all eventually died.

“You see, as trees normally grow in nature, winds continuously bend them back and forth, making microscopic tears in their bark. The tree responds by filling the tiny breaks with protective sap that hardens and forms a sturdy outer core, making the tree trunk strong enough to stand upright. So, without the buffeting of wind in the protected dome of Biosphere II, the trees there simply flopped over and broke after reaching a certain height.”

I think I get it. Struggles and difficul-ties can make us stronger. If we never had challenges come our way, then we would be weak and susceptible to “flop-ping” over when adversity struck. I love trees, but I am glad I am not one, because I need others to help me get through life.

Dalhart is RICH in resources and one of the greatest resources we have is each other. I highly recommend your first source for support is through the family of God, the local church. Church is God’s idea and His plan to help one another get through life. And ultimate-ly, it’s really our faith in Jesus Christ that sets us free to really live.

So maybe that’s the real issue about church. We are trying to put the church before Jesus when He should be first. My thinking is, people will not fall in love with the church until they fall in love with Jesus, our greatest resource and help through this life.

The storms of life are going to blow. My question to you is, where is your anchor and strength? If you haven’t al-ready, give God a chance to show you just how loving and good He really is. Give God an opportunity to demonstrate His strength in your circumstances.

In John 10:10 Jesus makes this state-ment; “The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come to give you life and to give it more abundantly.” This means He is for us and wants to help us through this life. Will you give Him an opportunity to do what He does best? Will you give Him an opportunity help you live abundantly? Hope to see you in God’s house this Sunday.

Public Notice

Staff and volunteers were busy at the Dalhart schools this week, with registration for new and returning stu-dents under way.

At Dalhart Intermediate, an organized process was in place, with parents moved from station to station, providing information, filling out forms, and learning about ways to be involved in their children’s educa-tion.

The Parent Teacher Organization – PTO – is one way parents can have a hand in promoting the school and events. Britni Frische provided information about the group, which gathers parents to help with holiday par-ties in the classrooms, work on fundraisers for class trips and other events, and serve on the PTO board.

A Back to School night for Dalhart Elementary School is August 13 from 5-6 p.m. There will be orien-tation for sixth graders at Dalhart Junior High School on August 8 from 5-7 p.m. and a Back to School Night at the Dalhart High football field on August 13 from 6-8 p.m.

Classes begin at the Dalhart schools on August 15.

With school just around the corner – and the XIT Parade on Saturday – members of the Dalhart High School Golden Wolves Band were practicing their skills this week.

Freshmen, who are new to the band, not only had to learn the music they will perform, but also how to march in line and in step.

Band director Joshua Bell had the freshmen, dozens of them, out on the football field for the drills. He used a drumstick and wooden block to beat out the time, while providing instructions.

The full band will be marching at the head of the XIT Parade, which runs from Texas Boulevard north on Denrock Avenue to the firestation, then back along Denver Avenue.

Nan Stewart and Arnold Svoboda were chosen the Coon Memorial Nursing Home’s XIT Queen and King this week.

XIT Queen and King named at Coon Memorial Home

Coon Memorial Nursing Home has “crowned” its own 2018 XIT King and Queen again this year.

The pair were selected by secret ballot and announced at a special ceremony Monday morning, with the XIT Directors, Queen contestants and others present.

Arnold Svoboda, the XIT King, has been a resident since March. He is originally from Brooklyn, New York, served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as an auto mechanic and other technical-mechanic fields. He re-tired at age 80 after more than 20 years as a mainte-nance director at several nursing homes.

Svoboda moved to Dalhart with his eldest of two daughters in 2016.

Accepting the honor, Arnold quoted George M. Co-han, the American composer and playwright: “My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my sister thanks you, and I thank you.”

XIT Queen Nan Stewart has lived at Coon Memorial Nursing Home since January. She was born in Gra-nola, Kansas, growing up in Independence, Kansas. A “war bride,” Nan wed her husband in 1944 and they were married for 48 years. They lived in Kansas City for 35 years, raised their son, and moved to Dalhart in 1982. Nan worked in a beauty salon and sold real estate.

Nan was presented with a special hat and a blue sash, before donuts and treats were served.
