T he Government Emergency Telecommuni-cations Service (GETS) is a National
Security and Emergency Preparedness (NS/EP)service of the Federal Government. This UserGuide will show you how to place a GETS calland how to obtain assistance.
NOTE: GETS is to be used only by authorizedFederal, State, and local government and otherauthorized personnel when they are unable tocomplete emergency calls through normal oralternate telecommunications means using thepublic telephone network.
GETS provides:
• An increased probability of completingyour emergency calls when normal callingmethods fail
• Voice and data transmission via clear orsecure telephone, facsimile, modem, orother equipment
• A single, universal telephone number anda Personal Identification Number (PIN),which allow you to access the serviceworldwide

You should exercise care in handling andentering your PIN. Report a lost GETS card
as soon as possible. When you do this, yourPIN will be canceled, and you will be issued anew one. To help prevent fraud you should dothe following:
• Guard your PIN from compromise by notopenly exposing your card or PIN to anyone
• Memorize your PIN and password
• Report a lost or stolen GETS card as soonas possible by calling User Assistance at1-800-818-GETS (1-800-818-4387), andalso notify your POC
• Be aware of people loitering when youmake calls in public places
• Use a normal conversational tone whenplacing operator assisted calls to avoidbeing overheard
• Never use your GETS card to verify youridentity
• Never reveal your PIN to anyone other thana GETS operator or a GETS User Assistancerepresentative you have called
• If you must share your PINwith others in an emer-gency, please callGETS User Assis-tance to advisethem of multipleusers. When theneed for multipleusers of your PINno longer exists,advise GETS User Assis-tance and your old PIN willbe canceled and a new card with a new PINwill be issued to you.
