Urticaria or Hive, the first thing that comes in your head is - What is this Urticaria? Both hives and urticaria are the same conditions. Urticaria is the medical term that is used for hives. They are moderately the common responses that you come across when you are in contact with medicine, food, or pollen, insect bite, dust and weed. You may be slightly or badly allergic to these substances. It has no specific age group, so it can affect anyone, young or old, showing no preference for gender or race. Excess perspiration or stress can also be one of the causes for Urticaria.

They resemble a mosquito bite with raised red welts, itchy or burning sensation. They are present in clusters of two or more and are due to release of body histamine - a chemical agent produced by the body when it comes in contact with the foreign bodies or similar to it.

Different Types of Hives or Urticaria

As there are different types of Urticaria, you should be aware of them in case of its occurrence.

Acute Urticaria - This type of allergy is the most common among individuals. It appears as little, raised red bumps on the surface of the skin causing itching. Their outbreak is very short-lived and may occur due to foods such as chocolate, nuts, fish, raw produce or milk or drugs such as high blood pressure medication, ibuprofen, pain killers like codeine or due to an insect bite, or illness like flu.

Chronic Urticaria - This allergy is long-lasting and may be accompanied by shortness of breath, diarrhea, and sore muscles. Till now the exact cause of this type of urticaria is unknown and it can be the symptom of some underlying illness.

Physical Urticaria - This type of urticaria appears about one hour after the physical stimulation to the skin from heat, cold, rubbing against the area or vibration or pressure.

Dermatographism - It forms up after some deliberate scratching or touching of the skin.

How Urticaria can be Cured

The cure for the hives or urticaria doesn't comes in the form of pill or cream. Therefore, if you want to stop urticaria, you have to understand that steroids, allergy tests, antihistamines and other natural methods will treat urticaria for short term only. Most of the chronic urticaria treatments address the symptoms by blocking the release of histamine and it really works.

Allergy Tests

The allergy tests may be able to point out the triggers, that triggers the reaction and not the cause of reaction. The results obtained in first test may vary with the results obtained in the second-time test, it is true because the allergens that triggers the response may change within an hour or a day.

It is said that prevention is better than cure, similarly the best treatment is to avoid its further contact with the source of the reaction. Anti-histamine products such as Benadryl can be also be used to treat urticaria. You can take these at the time of occurrence of hives or on a low chronic dose to ensure the outbreak of hives is suppressed.
