Word on the Street--------------------------------------------------By Kathleen Sterling

We have big news of our own!

On March 15, Valley News Group will publish the premier edition of the Encino Enterprise, a community newspaper for homeowners and businesses in Encino.

For years we had been asked by community leaders and businesses in that area to publish a paper “just for them.”

With the help of the Encino Chamber of Commerce and various community partners, we are ready to launch!

The new paper will follow the format of our three existing papers - Warner Center News, Valley Vantage and Calabasas Enterprise.

We’ll offer breaking news, business news, entertainment, health and fitness, chamber news, real estate, a calendar of events and people in the news.

We’re working closely with LAPD Senior Leads, local landlords, the Councilman’s office and more to bring the most up-to-date news to our readers.

Twice monthly we’ll deliver the Encino Enterprise

to 10,000 homes south of the boulevard, with another 5,000 papers delivered to Ventura Blvd. Additionally, we’ll send the paper digitally to 8,000 email readers.

All four of our papers will be posted on our new, improved and interactive website, designed by the geniuses at COWE Consulting.

We’re proud to announce a line-up of premier advertisers who’ve committed to support the new paper, including UCLA Health, Providence Tarzana, Westfield, Gaspar Insurance, AAA Travel, First Bank and Blue Dog Beer Tavern. More are signing up every day!

We’re all about local news - so we welcome your input and editorial ideas. We also want your advertising referrals. Our advertisers are what keep us bringing the local news to your doorstep.

We’re also keeping it all the family! My daughter, Katie Sterling, who started in the office in her crib, then graduated to a bouncy chair, then a playpen, then a small desk, and then a bigger desk, has been writing articles for

the papers for years. This year, she’s taken the

helm as the editor of the new paper. Address all editorial submissions to her at [email protected]. Advertising questions can be sent to myself or Glen Kovacs at [email protected].

We’re excited about our new venture, and the new website. We will now cover local news from Agoura all the way east to the 405!

Want to see the new paper? Send us your email saying “Register Me for Encino” and we’ll send you the paper every two weeks.

As always, our goal is to keep it local, local, local. Each of our papers addresses the news of that particular community. We’re working hard on the new one to keep it all about Encino.

party house at Winnetka and Penfield as an example. The business closed in 2009 and the property was abandoned. “Not only did we constantly arrest multiple transients there; one was actually collecting rent money and drugs for other transients to live there. After over 20 arrests, constant narcotic activity and white supremacist graffiti, we got building and safety to hold a hearing and the commission granted a demolition permit, and in less than a week it was gone,” he said.

Neuman said that on their end they are awaiting the determination of the city. “We’ve capitulated to every request from SOS. Years ago Neighborhood Council approved 23 units. We’re now at 19 single-family homes,” he said. “My client has spent over $50,000 to maintain the property over the last five years. In the end, development cures the problem.”

City Council Rolls Out Approval to Pave StreetsThe Los Angeles City Council Wednesday approved an

ordinance proposed by local Councilman Bob Blumenfield to pave city streets that have gone untouched for almost 80 years. He said he found it hard to believe that some streets in his district had been left unpaved for decades.

The 13-0 vote approved all old ordinances and rules that withdrew the streets from use. Though they were officially taken off city registers, the streets were still left open to the public for driving and walking, and homes were developed around them.

Blumenfield estimated that the cost of fixing and repaving all the withdrawn streets could be $15 to $35 million, noting that the annual budget for all street resurfacing and reconstruction in the entire city is about $200 million. “It’s a good chunk of money, and we’re going to have to figure out how to do it,” he said.

By Katie SterlingWhile there is certainly no shortage of restaurants

to choose from in the surrounding area, Sloane’s is the type of restaurant worth traveling out of your usual culinary jurisdiction for.

Tucked away on Laurel Canyon Blvd, Sloane’s is the perfect neighborhood spot even if it’s not your own neighborhood per se. A rustic aesthetic welcomes customers for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the unspoken invitation to stay as long as you desire; the ideal spot to lounge the day away drinking and sharing a meal between friends. After all, with a menu packed with innovative offerings, there’s no shortage of delectable dishes to choose from.

Founder and operator Bobby Montes has packed the menu with American style cuisine with a slightly eclectic twist to keep the menu fresh and packed with flavor. While one of their most signature and satisfying items is the Really Big Chicken, a southern style fried sandwich with all the fixings, there are hidden gems throughout the menu that serve to show they know how to put a twist on the classics. Fancy some fries? The traditional seasoned variety are truly addicting but

Step Out to Sloane’s then why not venture out to try the crab fat option? The Sloane burger can be crafted to your liking but so can the Three Amigo taco combos of masala shrimp, BBQ pork belly and chicken philly varieties.

With a menu crafted to delight any palate, who’s to say that venturing outside your normal order won’t delightfully surprise you. After all, perhaps my favorite dish of the evening, was, dare I say it...a salad?! I know...I never thought we’d see this day either. The kale and quinoa salad is a refreshing entree of light greens tossed in an herb vinaigrette that’s elevated with a perfectly seared salmon filet and creamy bleu cheese, culminating in an ideal mix of hearty and healthy.

However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Montes hopes their true claim to fame will

be the breakfast burrito- a flour tortilla packed with pork belly, crispy potatoes, eggs and the usual accoutrement. For an added flair, add the habanero syrup to truly tickle the taste buds. Let me tell you...the claim is not far fetched...But who’s to say you can’t make your way through the menu? After all, with an all-day, everyday happy hour, you’ll be sure

By Janey M. RifkinThere are two types of

reactions to food: allergy and intolerance.

The good news is that only 4% of adults are affected by food allergies. These reactions happen quickly, right after you’ve eaten a food. You need to determine what food is not agreeing with you in order to protect yourself from frequent indigestion.

A food allergy is an abnormal and overactive response from your immune system to something you shouldn’t react to. When you eat the offensive ingredient, your immune system revs up production of antibodies: proteins that fight foreign substances. These indirectly trigger the production of histamines which start what we recognize as an allergic reaction. This whole cascade happens quickly, usually within minutes.

Allergy symptoms can involve your skin, respiratory system, and gastrointestinal system. Swelling, itching, hives, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, lightheadedness, and/or vomiting can happen momentarily. Seek emergency care followed up with your physician or an allergist, when necessary.

This entire dynamic is especially crucial if you have a reaction after eating shellfish. This is the one exception to food allergy that can be severely serious - shellfish and anaphylaxis. That reaction, anaphylaxis, is life-threatening in

Healthgrades, a leading consumer healthcare resource, included Providence Tarzana Medical Center today on its 2019 America’s Best 50 hospitals, ranking among the top one percent of hospitals in the nation for quality.

Sister hospitals Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills and Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank were also in Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award, recognizing the two percent in the nation.

“It’s not a coincidence that all three of our Providence hospitals in the San Fernando Valley were recognized among the best because we share our expertise, continually raising the bar on quality patient care,” said Dale Surowitz, Providence Tarzana’s chief executive. “The credit goes to our physicians, nurses and staff who work together as teams to ensure excellence for our patients and their families.”

The Healthgrades analysis revealed that, on average, America’s Best Hospitals outperformed their peers in treating a core group of conditions that account for more than 80 percent of mortalities in areas evaluated, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.

Providence Tarzana Rated in Top One Percent

that it causes difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.

Food intolerances or sensitivities usually don’t involve the immune system. A food intolerance occurs in the digestive system because it’s the inability of your body to break down certain substances. Experts do not understand all the mechanisms involved, but they have decoded the most prevalent one - dairy.

To be “lactose-intolerant” means your body is not producing enough of the enzyme that breaks down the sugar in milk. Unlike allergy symptoms, the signs of intolerance are most often digestive, such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and abdominal cramping.

The treatment plan for a food allergy is simple yet life-changing. You must avoid any contact with food that’s causing problems. Be extra cautious when eating out. For avoidance of food sensitivities, keep a diary of everything you eat and how you feel afterward. Journaling simplifies the search. Avoid the triggers. We usually outgrow them, but severe cases may possibly be diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.

There are always substitute foods, which do not offend your inflammatory or digestive systems. Seek them out. Eating should be agreeable and this can be achieved!

By Neill SimmonsThe highlight of March

is a special conjunction of the beautiful star cluster, the Pleiades and the red planet Mars. Look west after 8:00 pm on Thursday the 28th and notice Mars is under the star cluster. Remember, a conjunction is where objects appear to be touching. Mars will be there for four nights, then it begins to move away from the Pleiades. This event can be seen with the naked eye, but will look better in binoculars. Before this event happens, look on the night of March 12 when the crescent Moon will be next to the star cluster.

Saturday night, March 20, would be a great time for a “Super Moon Party.” This is the third month in a row we have had a Super Moon!!! The American Indians named this the “Worm Moon.” This was the time of the year when patches of snow had melted, leaving a spot for the birds to try and get a tasty worm to eat.

Mark Saturday, March 2, on your calendar to get up early, about 5:30 am, to see a great sight. Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and the “Old Moon” make a very noticeable line in the pre-dawn

recent “Jeopardy” question.March is the best month to

see the constellation Orion and his hunting dogs in the night sky. Look to the left of Orion and down to see “Canis Major,” which mean “Big Dog.” This constellation is easy to spot as it has the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius. Notice when Sirius is low on the horizon, it twinkles in three colors: white, blue and red. Now go above Sirius and see one super bright star, this is “Canis Minor” which means “Little Dog.” Of course, all this is always easier to see if viewing away from the city lights.

March 14th is the best night to see “The Wall of the Moon.” In the south of the Moon is the crater called “Rupes Recta.” In this crater, there is an old wall of

lava almost two miles wide and 70 miles long. This wall rises 1,300 feet above the surface of the Moon. Try spotting this with

binoculars.NASA has

made a major decision to go back to the Moon and establish a permanent Moon Space Base. It will hire private companies to do a lot of the work to get there. NASA also plans to have a space station orbit the moon.

The astro-nomers of the European Union have announced

that they have found not one, but 300,000 new galaxies unseen before now!

Fun Fact: NASA’s probes have spotted “fog” in some of the craters of Mars. Fog usually is associated with water.

Saturday March 9 an astronomy group called The Everyday Spacers are going to put on a free “Star Party” in the hills of Thousand Oaks off of Lynn Road. It is about eight miles off the 101 freeway at the Satwiwa Indian Reservation. For more info visit www.spacer.pamhoffman.com.

to want to balance out the booze. On Sundays, enjoy the gluttony of bottomless mimosas for a whopping $9 ...a deal so good, I almost hesitated to share the news for risk of not being able to get in myself. Offering an impeccable list of beer and wine, Sloane’s further shows their creative spin by utilizing the alcohol on offer to create innovative mixed drinks. Those with a keen cinematic eye may even notice a savvy connection between the signature cocktails. Hint to the readers: In almost every scene of this heist movie, Brad Pitt is constantly shoveling an array of food into his mouth, much like yours truly while dining at Sloane’s.

Montes’ love of movies is only slightly surpassed by his love of food and it’s evident how well his passions combine to make Sloane’s a passion project that delivers. Effortlessly inviting with a menu that doesn’t compromise on flavor for affordability, this Bueller-named eatery holds the promise of being as well liked as its namesake.

Sloane’s is located at 5338 Laurel Canyon Blvd., Valley Village. Call (818) 509-5828 or visit www.sloanesrestaurant.com.
