Consider this analogy. When a person falls off a large ship, the ship can’t turn around immediately and rescue them. So the crew deploys a small fast boat to get to them quickly. Once the overboard person has been located, the crew throws them a lifesaver to help keep them afloat until they can bring the person to safety into the boat, and ultimately back to the ship.
In the current Survival Chain for someone suffering SCA, the hospital is usually a long way away, so an ambulance is despatched with trained personnel and AED equipment to keep the victim alive until they reach hospital. This person needs attention immediately in order to survive, but the ambulance will take on average more than 11 minutes.
