• The goal of the Community Plumbing Challenge programme is to demonstrate the vital role of the plumbing industry in protecting public health.

• The 2016 project will require Plumbers to design and install new sanitation systems for existing toilet and wash facilities across Diepsloot, working in close collaboration with the WASSUP team.

• New designs will take into consideration current infrastructure (including toilets, taps and drains), community sanitation needs, ongoing maintenance, and the ability to control and monitor water usage.

• 2 Team Members are recommended for this role.

TEAM ROLE:

Metalwork

• A critical aspect of existing toilet and wash facilities in Diepsloot is the door and locking mechanism. The design and functionality of these parts are a fundamental issue in terms of access, security and privacy for local residents when using the facilities on a daily basis. This issue is common in many other informal settlements across South Africa, and can be the difference between toilet facilities being used and being safe, or not.

• The 2016 project will require design, construction and installation of a new door and lock system: a suitable skillset, covering welding and fabrication abilities, is advised.

• 1 Team Member is recommended for this role.

TEAM ROLE:

• The ongoing Diepsloot Sanitation Programme has evolved from the architectural network of Global Studio and Healthabitat, dating back to 2007. Mapping, consideration of the built environment, and broader urban planning are a key part of this unique community collaboration.

• The 2016 project will require ‘bigger picture’ thinking concerning the delivery and maintenance of new and upgraded sanitation facilities in Diepsloot, robust detailing for the whole plumbing installation, plus the ability to document and oversee project management onsite. A suitable skillset, with abilities in related software applications (e.g. CAD and/or BIM) is advised.

• 1 Team Member is recommended for this role.

• Team Leaders play a critical role in mentoring and directing their Team throughout the project, and are responsible for ongoing liaison with the Community Plumbing Challenge organizers and local community groups.

• The 2016 project will assign further specific roles to Team Leaders, to create an overall collaborative group across the project site.

• 2 Team Leaders/Coaches are recommended, per Team.
