Donors Make the Difference for 10,000 Surgeries AnnuallyYour generosity has helped build a robust surgery program at Middlesex Hospital that uses the latest technology to help patients in the community.

Each year, 85 surgeons at Middlesex Hospital perform more than 10,000 surgeries, using the latest technology and procedures.

You help make that happen.

Donor support for new medical technology has changed Middlesex Hospital over the years, helping to boost the number of Hospital sub-specialist surgeons who treat patients. These surgeons specialize in thoracic (lung), orthopedic and colorectal surgeries to complex cancer surgeries and vascular surgeries, among countless other specialties.

The renovated Diagnostic & Interventional Suite, which opened in the fall of 2016, is the most recent example of how donors are helping the Hospital advance surgical care. The 4,393-square-foot suite includes a hybrid catheterization laboratory designed to meet the needs of patients requiring heart, vascular and other interventional procedures.

The Hospital also now offers intravascular ultrasound, which enables physicians to view images from inside blood vessels in real time to identify blockages or ruptures. This technology reduces exposure to radiation and aids in the placement of vascular stents.

The Hospital’s surgery program is constantly growing and evolving, and it has the resources to make a positive difference in so many lives.

The Hospital’s sub-specialists and general surgeons utilize the newest technology to improve patient care and outcomes. Without the support of its donors, the Hospital would not be able to offer the services that it does.

Barbara Thompson, director of surgical services, says part of what makes the Hospital special is its ability to integrate technology into patient care, and she says the Hospital is responsive when surgeons and other staff request something new.

“We aren’t afraid to step out of the box a little bit and do something a little different,” she says.

The Hospital’s sub-specialists and general surgeons utilize the newest technology to improve patient care and outcomes.

Donations Help Grow Integrative Medicine Offerings for Cancer PatientsAt Middlesex Hospital, donations allow conventional and integrative medicine to work hand-in-hand to help cancer patients—and others who can benefi t.

“Cancer is not just something physical,” says Pat O’Brien, coordinator of survivorship and integrative medicine.

“We want to treat the mind, body and spirit.”

A decade ago, the Hospital’s Center for Survivorship and Integrative Medicine made its debut when it offered Reiki and refl exology. It now includes other therapies,

such as acupuncture, hypnotherapy and massage therapy. The center, located at the Hospital’s Cancer Center,

helps about 3,000 patients annually.

When Christine Willett was battling breast cancer, integrative medicine

wasn’t available. However, she did try integrative therapies later to fi ght

residual joint pain and boost her emotional wellbeing. She believes

so strongly in the benefi ts of integrative medicine that her foundation, After the Storm, Inc., raises money to help patients who experience cancer-related symptoms, such as nausea, fatigue and pain.

“We know how much it helps,” Willett says.

Due to the generosity of After the Storm and grassroots funding from the goPINK Project, cancer patients receive three free sessions of integrative therapy. Integrative medicine is not covered by insurance and can be expen-sive. Donations help alleviate the cost, while allowing patients like Cecilia Osborne to reap the benefi ts.

“The nurse navigator suggested that I experience massage or refl exology,” says Osborne, a breast cancer survivor.

“I started going once a week and continue to go today. Integrative medicine therapies are such a great addition to typical treatment. The support is beyond anything you can imagine.”

The Center for Survivorship and Integrative Medicine helps 3,000 patients annually.

Mayo Clinic Collaboration Making a Difference for Patients

What is an eConsult?An eConsult is an electronic second opinion from a Mayo Clinic specialist that offers our patients additional peace of mind, all while staying close to home and continuing to be cared for by us.

Since fall 2015, 240 Middlesex Hospital patients facing complex cancer, heart and gastrointestinal diagnoses, among other conditions, have benefi ted from Middlesex Hospital and Mayo Clinic physicians collaborating through eConsults.

It’s been more than a year since Middlesex Hospital announced its collaboration with Mayo Clinic through the Mayo Clinic Care Network, and the Hospital is using its new resources to tackle its patients’ most complicated medical cases in a variety of areas, such as cancer care, pulmonary medicine and urology.

Your support has allowed Middlesex physicians to collaborate with Mayo Clinic physicians. The hope: better outcomes for all.

“The peace of mind this brings our patients is priceless,” says Dr. David Miner, a Middlesex Hospital nephrologist.

One way that patients benefi t from this partnership is through eConsults. An eConsult allows Middlesex providers to get input from Mayo Clinic physicians about specifi c cases, giving patients access to a collective group of experts without having to travel. A secure online portal is used to share patient information between Middlesex Hospital and Mayo Clinic.

Since 2015, the Hospital has requested Mayo Clinic eConsults for 240 patients. It is a service that Dr. Nadeem Hussain, a gastroenterologist, uses regularly.

Hussain says Middlesex’s relationship with Mayo Clinic often saves patients from traveling long distances for further evaluation and from paying for additional doctor’s visits and testing. It can also save them time by providing access to medical opinions quicker.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Mayo Clinic input is helping reassure and impact our patients,” Hussain says.

“For problems that are complex, unusual or particularly rare, it’s the perfect resource to obtain an expert opinion.”

Donors Help Make Cancer Care More ConvenientCancer patients living in Connecticut shoreline communities will soon be able to get quality cancer care closer to home because of you and your generosity.

When you have cancer, it is often diffi cult to travel to your medical appointments. You get tired, and you must deal with treatment side effects. That’s why, with your help, Middlesex Hospital is expand-ing its Middletown-based comprehensive cancer program. The new satellite center at the Shoreline Medical Center in West-brook will help decrease travel time for the many patients who would otherwise have to drive to Middletown for care.

Since the Cancer Center in Middletown opened in 2002, the number of area

patients requiring cancer treatment has increased by 15 percent, reinforcing the need for a satellite location. The new service will be available to patients in the fall of 2017.

Using state-of-the-art equipment, the Shoreline Cancer Center will offer many services, including medical and radiation oncology and chemotherapy and radi-ation therapy. It will span two levels, housing a radiation therapy annex and a medical oncology suite and chemother-apy and infusion center. Like the Cancer Center in Middletown, the Shoreline Cancer Center will be accredited by the Commission on Cancer and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

The Shoreline Cancer Center and its staff will ensure excellent and

convenient care for patients. The Hospital’s membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network will enable physicians to access the knowledge and expertise of a world-renowned health care

institution. All of this would not be possible without your help.

Women Launch Wellness Fund What do menopause, breast cancer detection and heart health have in common? They are all health issues that affect women in unique ways, which is the inspiration behind the Women’s Wellness Fund, a new initiative of Middlesex Hospital.

Women who join the fund are invited to exclu-sive “Eat, Drink & Learn” health talks which focus on a range of topics—everything from insomnia to infertility and libido to lung cancer. Donations to the fund support priority women’s health projects and free public health talks on issues that are important to women’s health.

Named Funds

Alice Park, of Boston, attended the New England Deaconess Training School for Nurses. While she didn’t share much about the care she provided to her patients, her son, Charles, admired her profession and wanted to support nurses in a way that would honor his mother’s legacy.

This inspiration brought Charles Park to the Middlesex Hospital Office of Philanthropy.

After careful planning with his advisor and staff from the Office of Philanthropy, Charles established the Charles M. and Alice G. Park Fund for Nursing Education, which would be funded by proceeds from his estate. Charles passed away in 2016, and his named fund was established to support continuing education for nurses at Middlesex Hospital as they work toward advanced degrees and specialized certifications.

We thank Charles for establishing a fund that will benefit nurses and their patients for years to come.

The Heritage Circle recognizes and honors special friends who have provided for Middlesex Hospital’s future in their own fi nancial and estate plans. This generous foresight includes a provision in a will, the establishment of a trust or a future gift of life insurance, stocks, real estate or other type of gift. 1 City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073 donated $1,383 to support the Comprehensive Breast Center and cancer patients.

2 The third annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser, held at the Portland Firemans Grounds, raised $1,200 in support of breast cancer patients and the Comprehensive Breast Center.

3 Forty-two salons, businesses, schools and teams and countless community members raised funds through goPINK to support breast cancer patients at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center. Together, they raised more than $27,000 for a lifetime total of more than $150,000. goPINK was founded by EG Salon of Middletown.

4 The third annual Portland Breast Cancer Fundraiser, held at Buds Cafe, raised awareness and much-needed funds for the Comprehensive Breast Center. The event raised $4,870—its highest amount to date.

5 Tanger Outlets Westbrook is a long-time supporter of the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center and holds its annual Tanger Pink Style fundraiser every year. This year, the outlets donated $4,188 year for a lifetime total of more than $100,000.

6 Durham Fitness donated more than $2,500 from its seventh annual Pedal for Pink fundraiser to the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center and Comprehensive Breast Center.

7 The Cromwell Merchants Association donated $1,500 from the annual Mayor’s Ball to support the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center.

8 Haddam-Killingworth Soccer Club donated $1,764 to the Comprehensive Breast Center from its annual Pink Day

fundraiser, which includes players wearing pink socks. Fields are also painted pink, and there is the popular Pie the Coach contest.

9 The Sandy Peszynski Breast Cancer Foundation donated $17,000 to the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center for a lifetime total of $176,250. Money was raised through the Pumpkintown Prom, Pumpkintown U.S.A., and from numerous donations from the community.

10 After the Storm Foundation donated $28,000 from its annual Art Bra event to subsidize integrative medicine services for cancer patients. The foundation has donated $148,000 to the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center since 2009.

11 Whalers Youth Hockey Pee Wee B Team donated $1,000 from its Pink in the Rink fundraiser to support the Comprehensive Breast Center and cancer patients.

12 Lyman Orchards and Lyman Orchards Golf Club raised $3,569 for the Comprehensive Breast Center at the fourth annual Paint a Pumpkin Pink event and first-ever Putts for Pink women’s golf outing.

13 The annual Boobstock concert raised $3,033 for the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center.

14 Parisian Salon & Day Spa promoted breast cancer awareness and raised $3,000 to support the Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center at its annual cut-a-thon.

15 Guilford Savings Bank has sponsored the Zahn Community Gallery since it opened at the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in 2014.

16 Thanks to support from individual donors and the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA), the Hospital opened its Diagnostic & Interventional Suite, featuring state-of-the-art equipment that doctors use to perform cardiac catheterizations and a variety of endovascular and interventional radiology procedures.

17 The Westbrook Elks Lodge #1784 donated $22,500 to the Comprehensive Breast Center from its eighth annual Beach Jam for Breast Cancer concert. The money supports nurse navigation services for breast cancer patients.

The 30th annual Hospice Golf Tour-nament raised $41,645 for Hospice & Palliative Care and unveiled a new scoreboard that honors John Kelley, of the Portland Golf Course, for his years of service. The tourna-ment has raised more than $500,000 since its founding.

The Valentine H. Zahn Community Gallery at the Shoreline Medical Center has hosted 16 exhibits featuring local artists since opening in the spring of 2016. The gallery is open to the public.
