School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are a great way to set yourself up in the career you want while you complete your HSC.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW. They allow you to start an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while you’re still at school. And your training at TAFE NSW will gain you credits towards your HSC as well as an industry-recognised national qualification.

Some apprenticeships and traineeships can alsocontribute towards the ATAR.

What’s involved in an apprenticeship/traineeship?

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a combination of paid work, training at TAFE NSW and school, which leads to a nationally recognised trade qualification and all while gaining credits towards your HSC.

Apprenticeships last about four years and cover trade areas. You could complete year one of your apprenticeship part time during years 11 and 12, and then finish your apprenticeship once leaving school. This means, you’ll be one year ahead of students that choose to start their apprenticeship when they leave school.

Traineeships last about one or two years and cover non trade areas. You could complete your course and be ready for full time work by the end of year 12. This means, you’ll be one to two years ahead of students that choose to start their traineeship when they leave school.

How do I become a school-based apprentice or trainee? The good news is that apprenticeships and traineeships are available in over 500 occupations, so chances are there will be one that matches your interests. Talk to your school’s career advisors or teachers about school-based apprenticeships.

Find an employer willing to take you on as a school-based apprentice. You can do this by:

c looking in the job vacancy ads in your local paper or on the web c contacting the Job Services Australia provider c contacting employers in the industries you’d like to work in. Go and see them and leave a copy of your rèsumè or you may already be working part time in an industry.

Sydney Institute has some school-based traineeship positions available each year and they will be advertised through your school. Right now we have traineeships available in Automotive Light Vehicle Servicing and Health Services Assistance. For other industry areas you will need to find a suitable employer.

Once you have found an employer, ask your careers advisor to complete and submit a school-based apprentice/trainee notification form to our SBAT Project Officer. Both the form and SBAT Project Officer details can be found at www.sydneytafe.edu.au/tvet
