WHAT IS GESTURE?

A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication in which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages, either in place of speech or together and in parallel with words.

Gestures include movement of the hands, face, or other parts of the body.

Gestures are an important aspect of human interaction, both interpersonally and in the context of man-machine interfaces.

EXAMPLE

Military air marshals use hand and body gestures to direct flight operations aboard aircraft carriers.

INTRODUCTION

Gesture recognition can be seen as a way for

computers to understand human body

language, thus building a richer bridge between

machines and humans than primitive text user

interfaces or even GUIs (graphical user

interfaces), which still limit the majority of

input to keyboard and mouse.

INTRODUCTION

Gesture recognition enables humans to interface with

the machine and interact naturally without any

mechanical devices.

Using the concept of gesture recognition, it is possible to

point a finger at the computer screen so that the cursor

will move accordingly.

Gesture recognition can be conducted with techniques

from computer vision and image processing.

What Are Gesture Recognition?

Interface with computers using gestures of the human body, typically hand movements.

Gesture recognition is an important skill for robots that work closely with humans.

Gesture recognition is especially valuable in applications involving interaction human/robot for several reasons.

TYPE OF GESTURES

There are many types of gesture recognition but some types are explain following:

Hand gesture recognition

Vision gesture recognition

Sign language recognition

Electrical field recognition etc..

Page 13: GESTURE prestation

Hand Gesture Recognition

Hand gesture recognition acts as a highly adaptive interface between machines and their users. Hand gesture recognition technology allows operation of complex machines using only a series of finger and movements, eliminating for physical contact between operator and machine.

Vision Gesture Recognition: There are two approaches to vision based gesture

recognition: Model based techniques: They try to create a three dimensional model of the users hand and use this for recognition. Image based methods: Image-based techniques detect a gesture by capturing pictures of a user’s motions during the course of a gesture. Scientist : Stefan hocking

Sign Language Recognition Just as speech recognition can transcribe speech to

text, certain types of gesture recognition software can transcribe the symbols represented through sign language into text.

These measurements can be used to measure the distance of a human hand or

other body part from an object; this facilitates a vast range of applications for a wide range of industries.

Virtual controllers

For systems where the act of finding or acquiring a physical controller

could require too much time, gestures can be used as an alternative control mechanism. Controlling secondary

devices in a car, or controlling a television set are examples of such

usage.

Remote control

Through the use of gesture recognition, remote control with the wave of a hand of various

devices is possible.

Electrical Field Recognition

Proximity of a human body or body part can be measured by sensing electric fields .

These measurements can be used to measure the distance of a human hand or other body part from an object; this facilitates a vast range of applications for a wide range of industries.Example : cell phone light

Advantage Of Gesture

Speed and sufficient reliable for recognition system. Good performance system with complex background.

The system successfully recognized static and dynamic gestures. Could be applied on a mobile robot control.

Simple, fast, and easy to implement. Can be applied on real system and play games.

No Training is required.

Advantage Of Gesture

Replace mouse and keyboard Pointing gestures Navigate in a virtual environment Pick up and manipulate virtual objects Interact with the 3D world No physical contact with computer Communicate at a distance Information can be easily presented in non-verbal

communication through using visual, audio-visual and silent means of non-verbal communication.

Page 21: GESTURE prestation

Non-verbal message may substitute for the verbal message especially if it is blocked by noise, interruption, long distance etc. for example: gestures-finger to lips to indicate need for quite, facial expressions- a nod instead of a yes.

Non-verbal cues of communication greatly help in handicapped people especially to deaf people. Deaf people are exchange message through the movements of hands, fingers, eye ball

Page 22: GESTURE prestation

-

The message of non-verbal communication reached the receiver very fast. For this reason it reduces the wastage of valuable time of the communicator.

Non-verbal cues of communication like sign and symbol can also communicate some messages very quickly than written or oral messages.

Page 23: GESTURE prestation

Disadvantage of gesture

Irrelevant object might overlap with the hand. Wrong object extraction appeared if the objects larger than the hand.

Performance recognition algorithm decreases when the distance is greater than 1.5 meters between the user and the camera.

Page 24: GESTURE prestation

Disadvantage Of Gesture

System limitations restrict the applications such as the arm must be vertical, the palm is facing the camera and the finger colour must be basic colour such as either red or green or blue.

Ambient light affects the colour detection threshold

Page 25: GESTURE prestation

Non-verbal communication is quite vague and imprecise. Since in this communication there is no use of words or language which expresses clear meaning to the receiver. No dictionary can accurately classify them. Their meaning varies not only by culture and context but by degree of intension.

In non-verbal communication, long conversation and necessary explanations are not possible. No party can discuss the particular issues of the messages.

Page 26: GESTURE prestation

In some cases non-verbal communication involves huge cost. For example, neon sign, power point presentation, cinema etc are very much costly compared to others form of communication.

verbal communication does not follow any rules, formality or structure like other communication. Most of the cases people unconsciously and habitually engaged in non-verbal communication by moving the various parts of the Non- body.

Conclusion

The importance of gesture recognition lies in building efficient human machine interaction. Its applications range from sign language recognition through medical rehabilitation to virtual reality. Gesture recognition 35 Soft computing tools pose another promising application to static hand gesture identification.. Thus, gesture recognition promises wide-ranging applications in fields from photojournalism through medical technology to biometrics.

Future trands

The future of this technology is hard to predict because with any technology, it is always changing. The horizon is a little blurry but one can make the assumption that it will only continue to develop and eventually turn into voice command technology. These two have already been integrated together but the point of technology is to be able to use it without thinking about it. Whatever that secret may be is what the future is going to be. Wearable tends to be the forerunner right now with Google glass becoming popular and the rumor of Apple releasing an iWatch next year

Page 29: GESTURE prestation

. It will be interesting to see where technology takes us because it is just as important to remember to stay human. Google has also been talking about making a car and with the Seri integration in others; technology and our phones have entered into every part of our lives. Perhaps there will come a day we will be able to speak things and they will just happen all in part to devices being able to completely understand our meanings.
