GE’s Tidal Stream SolutionsGE Renewable Energy offers you tidal technology that’s efficient, cost-effective and easy to maintain:

the Oceade* 1.4-18 turbine. Tidal stream technology draws on the power of fast currents, which are

generated when local geography constrains movement of ocean masses. Because water is 800 times

denser than air, the potential for power extraction is tremendous.

With its innovative buoyant and modular design, the Oceade 1.4-18 turbine allows rapid installation and

maintainability while enhancing energy extraction. Thanks to the nacelle’s buoyancy it can be easily towed

to and from the operating site, and by eliminating the need for specialist vessels it can reduce the cost of

installation and maintenance. This reliable turbine is part of a unique platform concept, designed to help you

make the best use of tidal stream resources at your site. Dedicated to providing you with a comprehensive

solution, our teams also are developing an innovative, low-cost retrievable subsea hub to connect tidal

turbines to the grid—reliably and cost-effectively.

Oceade Technology: A Proven ConceptGE has demonstrated the Oceade tidal stream turbine concept with a full-scale 1 MW prototype that

exports more than 1.2 GWh to the Scottish grid. The 1 MW tidal turbine was deployed in 2013 as part

of the ReDAPT consortium project (Reliable Data Acquisition Platform for Tidal, which was implemented

and co-funded by the Energy Technologies Institute). Located at the European Marine Energy Center’s

tidal test site, the turbine has demonstrated its endurance as well as its autonomous performance,

generating its full nominal power since July 2013. This prototype follows a 500 kW tidal stream turbine,

which already had generated electricity into the grid after its connection in September 2010 at the Fall of

Warness test site. The Oceade 1.4-18 is based on our extensive experience in refining and enhancing the

design of our tidal turbine technology.

Oceade Platform: Make the Most of Your Tidal ResourceA Unique Tidal Turbine PlatformOur extensive testing of two prototypes in real-world conditions led to the development of the Oceade

platform, and each of its variants offers the efficient, cost-effective features of the Oceade 1.4-18. The

Oceade Platform features blade rotor ranges up to 23 meters to adapt to a large range of site conditions,

depth and flow speed.

The Right Turbine for Each Site’s ConditionsThe Oceade platform is designed to fit variations in your tidal site conditions. You can choose the right

turbine for your site’s depth and current conditions, ensuring optimum use of the tidal resource. GE teams

can help you determine equipment specifications and turbine locations to fit your unique requirements.

GE’s Oceade platform also provides project developers with greater flexibility for optimizing tidal resource

use within an array. Combining variants of the Oceade family allows you to address the variability of tidal

conditions within a single site and optimize the layout to achieve the best overall yield.

With the Oceade platform, you could get up to 20 percent capacity factor increase, compared to using a

single variant.

Optimized Commercialization, Operation and MaintenanceWhenever possible, Oceade platform variants share common parts to decrease the cost of electricity

through standardization, reduce lead time and increase supply chain volume. With the use of plug-and-play

modules, serial production of the main nacelle components is eased, decreasing the overall cost of energy.

GE’s Oceade modular platform concept also helps ensure rapid maintenance onshore, so you can maximize

the time spent generating power. The interchangeability of the Oceade turbine modules and line-replaceable

units means reduced maintenance costs and rapid turnaround times. In addition, the modular approach

allows thorough tests prior to system assembly, increasing the reliability of your tidal farm.

Innovative Oceade 1.4-18 SolutionBuilt on more than 10 years of combined knowledge and experience, the Oceade 1.4-18, GE’s first tidal

stream turbine for the Oceade platform, offers you high efficiency and eased maintainability while helping

to ensure optimized cost of electricity.

Efficient. With a rotor diameter of 18 meters, the Oceade tidal stream turbine has rated power of 1.4 MW.

The Oceade 1.4-18 turbine helps ensure maximum energy extraction while counteracting power and speed

fluctuations caused by waves and turbulence. The nacelle features a yawing system to minimize structural

loads and wake effects, as well as power conversion equipment for grid-compliant power at nacelle output.

Cost-effective. The Oceade 1.4-18 has a fully modular design for optimized installation and maintenance.

The nacelle is buoyant, making it easy to tow to and from the operating site with no need for specialist

vessels. The turbine also features a patented system to allow diver-less operation, further reducing

operating costs. For offshore operations, simple and cost-effective installation tooling can be shared for a

whole farm.

Easy to maintain. The Oceade 1.4-18 is equipped with line-replaceable plug-and-play units, and allows

module interchange to ensure rapid turnaround times. A rear door and a man-hatch provide quick access

for faster assembly and service. The buoyant nacelle permits a spare turbine strategy on commercial

farms, so you can maximize availability and offer higher production time. With this innovative design, GE

provides a flexible O&M solution with low risk.

Raz Blanchard Tidal Pilot Farm EquipmentIn 2014, GE solutions were selected to supply equipment for a tidal energy pilot farm at Raz Blanchard,

west of the Cotentin peninsula (Manche) in France. Four Oceade 1.4-18 tidal turbines and an electrical

subsea hub will be installed at this high-potential tidal site.

This project will allow GE to test the Oceade 1.4-18 turbine under installation and operational conditions similar

to those in many commercial plants. The installation of the Oceade 1.4-18 turbines at the Raz Blanchard pilot

farm represents a decisive step toward setting up commercial operations using tidal energy.

GE’s Electrical Subsea Hub ConceptIn addition to being a technological challenge, exporting the electricity generated by tidal turbines subsea

to the onshore substation represents a significant portion of capital investment in a tidal farm.

GE has designed a low-cost, retrievable subsea hub solution that removes the need to run multiple

cables to shore. This provides a decreased environmental footprint and reduced cable costs, enabling the

development of commercial tidal farms.

GE’s subsea hub is buoyant, using our proven design, which can be rapidly installed using small vessels. And

it’s configurable to fit your equipment: GE can provide you with 4 to 16 turbine connections and plans for

export voltages up to 33 kV. In addition, thanks to the individual autonomous stab connections, and with the

reduction of ROV involvement during deployment, we help you reduce installation costs and complexity.
