Polling locationsmaintained for
referendum electionThe Village Board last
week opted to maintain thefour polling locations for theNov. 3 referendum election.
Village residents will go tothe polls on Nov. 3 to vote ona referendum question from thevillage seeking support toexceed the village's current taxlevy limit to support a full-timeFire Department. The referen-dum question is the only item
on the ballot.Village Clerk Barbara K.D.
Goeckner had proposed hav-ing one polling site for the spe-cial election, which would savebetween $7,400 and $11,400by less staff time and one bal-lot instead of four.
"My whole reason forbringing this is it's a cost sav-ings to the taxpayers I thinkshould be considered,"Goeckner told the board Aug.17. "It will save a lot of timeand money. Time involved inonly setting up one pollinglocation, only having one
group of reports for one report-ing unit."
In a memo to the board,Goeckner recommended thatthe one location for theNovember election be theBethlehem Lutheran school site,as it has the largest space of any polling location. She lateradded that it is a challenge tofind locations for elections andis concerned that some of thecurrent locations may drop out.
Goeckner indicated she
could not determine if Germantown has mergedpolling locations in the past. She said the biggest downsidewould be confusion by resi-dents of where to vote in theelection with only one pollinglocation instead of the fourlocations. Goeckner said staff gets those questions duringelections with the four loca-tions, as some residents onlyvote in presidential elections orpolling locations are changeddue to redistricting.
"I'm the first one who wantsto save money," Trustee Terri

Larry Ratayczak has been selected asthe new public works director for the vil-lage of Germantown, GermantownAdministrator David Schornack said lastweek.
Ratayczak currently holds the sameposition with the city of West Bend. He willbegin work with Germantown on Aug.
31.He will replace Dan Ludwig, whoretired earlier this summer.
New Public Works
director named
Kaminski said. "My fear is we are going tobe confusing people to the point where theymight be frustrated, they might not vote. Iprefer to keep our polling places the sameso people know where to go if they want tovote. I don't want to make it look like weretrying to skew in any way or affect in anyway the outcome of this vote for a full-time
Fire Department."
Trustee Dennis Myers agreed withKaminski, saying he appreciated the effortof village staff to save money but said hedoes not "want to screw anything up" bychanging the polling locations for the elec-tion.
The motion to keep the four locationswas approved by an 8-1 vote, with TrusteeDavid Baum voting against the motion.

Germantown Defensive CoordinatorDave Branske was recently selected to theWisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
During an interview at theGermantown Gridiron Club Family FunDay Aug. 8, Branske said he found outabout the honor in June as he was atMitchell International Airport, ready to go
on vacation."That was kind of neat, right before I
took off," Branske said. "It was awesome."The formal recognition ceremony will
be on April 9 at the Marriott West inMiddleton.
Branske said this is his 30th year of coaching.
"I expected to coach for a long time, but you never know how long it going tolast when you begin. You're just hopingthat you have the longevity; that you'rehealthy enough to do it for a long periodof time, and I was fortunate enough to do
that," Branske said.He said he continues to coach because
he enjoys being around students and thecoaches.
"It's like a family, and it's really hard toleave when it seems like it's part of yourfamily," Branske said.
Branske said that one change to the
sport has been the specialization, as thereis more conditioning and offseason train-ing.
"The kids are in better condition --they're bigger, stronger and faster, and Ithink they understand the sport a little bitmore than they did back then," Branskesaid.
He added that what has remained thesame "is the sport comes down to blocking, tackling and execution of the fundamen-tals. That's the way it's always going to be,I think." -By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor
