Germanic Traditions for Europe• Roman law saw crimes as crimes against

society and punishable by society (courts)• Germans saw many crimes (murder) as

personal and required revenge• Wergild- Compromise: Amount paid by

wrongdoer to the family of the person he injured or killed. A persons worth in society.

Ordeals• A person could prove their innocence by going

through a “Trial by Ordeal”• Based around idea of divine intervention• Involved physical trial : Hold red iron, walk on

coals, grab stones from boiling water, etc.• God would protect the innocent

Monks and Monasteries• Monk- A man who separates from ordinary human society in

order to pursue a life of total dedication to God• Monasticism- Living the life of a monk*Began as lone hermits“Saint” Benedict founded communities of monks with rules-Vows of poverty-Helped communities with Agriculture, weaving, carpentry, education, etc.

Some monks were missionaries and converted all parts of Europe

Scriptoria- Room where monks would transcribe, or copy, old books. Usually the bible, but also a lot of old Roman books. Helped preserve knowledge
