2012ANNUALREPORT

by Program and Operations Manager Russ ArledgeThe German Village Society has called Meeting Haus home for almost 25 years now, and it has been my pleasure to work closely with the Maintenance Committee as we tackled the task of keeping the building safe and in good repair. With the ever-increasing usage of the building in addition to the regular meetings, programs and special events, minimizing normal wear and tear can be a challenge. During a typical month, the building can be open as much as 60 to 80 hours per week, and a regular routine of building maintenance and housekeeping is even more important to keep the long-term costs down and the building in good condition.

This year we hit the ground running with newly remodeled offices and kitchen space, a new meeting space and property-file storage room, and a fresh coat of paint. The remodeling was immediately followed by a new phone system. The phones and the remodel were all donated. Our WiFi system was also replaced to support lots of people logging on at once – a result of more building usage.

Another exciting upgrade has been the purchase of the database program PastPerfect. This software program is able to keep track of all of our current and past members, all donations and in-kind gifts, our archives and art collections, oral histories, and our German Village property files and Fischer Archives. Digitization of our archives , which could take several years to complete, will mean people all over the world can sit at their computer and research German Village.

by Director Shiloh TodorovWhat a welcome! I joined German Village Society on October 12, 2011, and the relationships, projects and partnerships I’ve been privileged to experience since then will surely number among the most gratifying of my life. Villagers have introduced me to all that they are passionate about; all of their acquaintances across town and across the state; and have exposed me to the kind of generosity of spirit it takes to give on the level that they do – be it time, talent or treasure.

Beyond our 233 acres, it has been exciting to collaborate and learn from our city leaders, our neighboring neighborhoods, our like-minded preservationists, our sponsors and donors, and our partners across the spectrum. It has been with pride that I take calls from Columbus city departments asking Villagers’ input on projects. I have enjoyed forming emerging partnerships with the likes of Columbus Landmarks Foundation, Columbus Historical Society and Ohio Local History Alliance members.

I expect our 2013 to mean even closer ties to sponsors and donors as we look at improving our building and expanding our programs. Watch “Neighbors4Neighbors” and my “ThisWeek” column for details of all that the coming year shapes up to be.But for now, enjoy these 16 pages of news of the extremely good works created and celebrated by our tight-knit, dedicated nonprofit group.

by President Bill CaseProgress hallmarked the activities of the German Village Society in 2012. Our staff, volunteers, members, donors and trustees came together to advance the Society’s mission of “retaining the character and distinction of the past while creating a thriving and contemporary community in German Village.”

The Society carries out its mission efforts largely though the energetic efforts of various committees, which can all point with pride to noteworthy achievements, and about which you’ll read in these pages. The Society had a banner year on all fronts.

Of course, much of our success in 2012 can be attributed to the unstinting efforts of our director, Shiloh Todorov. As I see it, she serves as the Society’s “ringmaster,” keeping a daunting number of moving parts in harness, and ensuring that all we do is in step with the Society’s mission.

We cannot forget that the success of the Society will always depend on the continuing involvement and commitment of the entire membership. The Board (at Shiloh’s urging) determined that publishing this “Annual Report” would be the best method of demonstrating not only our achievements in 2012, but our stewardship of your contributions in the Society’s behalf. It is also my hope that folks who are considering becoming more active will be inspired by this good news to do so. It’s fun, you will make new friends, and you will feel good about your contribution.

Among our major friends and contributors – I want to call out Marika Arledge and Dimiter Todorov, who give many hours of support to their spouses (our full-time staffers) as GVS volunteers. They both work behind the scenes to do many of the jobs that no one else will do.

The Board of Trustees kicked off 2012 with a January retreat to set the vision for the year. The Board emerged with two mission-centric strategies: Advocate for and promote historic preservation; and educate visitors, residents and like-minded organizations about all of the ways German Village is a leader in historic preservation. As the year wraps up, here’s some of what we’ve accomplished:

CELEBRATIONS

GIVING BACK: SOCIETY RECOGNIZES VOLUNTEERS-by Hilary TalisThree prestigious awards mark the ongoing contributions of German Village Society members to this community and to the mission of preserving an invaluable historic neighborhood. Each of the recipients is a true champion of German Village and has generously contributed to the sense of pride and neighborliness exhibited in countless ways through their efforts.

Bill Mains, recipient of the 29th Frank Fetch Award, has always been a quiet and dignified champion of the Village. More than that, he understands the unique history of the place we inhabit. Bill has restored two properties and built one new home in cooperation with the German Village Commission. His fundraising efforts have brought sponsorship from various organizations to support our many projects.

Mary Connolly-Ross received the Village Valuable Award for 2012. Mary exemplifies this award by her willingness to host tours, roll up her sleeves to reorganize offices, and devote time to creating more inviting spaces within which to share the story of German Village. With her energy, wit and generosity, Mary makes everyone’s day better!

Trustee Sarah Irvin Clark was the deserving recipient of the Fred and Howard Ambassadorship Award for 2012. Her good deeds are numerous, and include: co-chairing the Society’s 50th Anniversary Committee, co-chairing the Haus und Garten Tour, serving as a Stewart School tutor, and garnering hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of positive PR for the Village.

IN TRIBUTE TO OUR CARETAKERS: 2012 CARETAKERS OF A LEGACY AWARDS-by Jeanne TranterGerman Villagers are more than mere owners of property in an extraordinary neighborhood of historic homes standing proudly along brick streets. We are caretakers of a legacy, bequeathed to us by the hard-working immigrants who established our neighborhood more than a century and a half ago; and by the passionate people who revived it 100 years later.

To underscore our collective role in honoring the historic nature of our neighborhood, the German Village Society and German Village Commission developed the annual Caretakers of a Legacy Awards program. The program recognizes people, projects and organizations for outstanding contributions to the preservation and enrichment of our neighborhood. The Commission gives three awards for excellence in architecture while the Society gives one award acknowledging community spirit and dedication to the German Village livelihood.

The Preservation Award was given to Tim Moore and Ken Hunger for their painstaking reconstruction of a front porch, removed before they purchased their 1899 home at 180 Reinhard. They worked with architect Bill Hugus to build the porch exactly as the original appeared in an old photo.

The Commissioners’ Award recognized a significant project at 684 City Park. Architect Bill Hugus and builder Klaus Gauer renovated the two-story brick home, built an addition and added a detached two-car garage.

The Chairman’s Award celebrated the renovation of a quaint, 800-square-foot cottage on Sycamore Street that is rumored to be one of the oldest in the Village – and had suffered years of neglect. Friends, neighbors and family worked together to give the cottage a major facelift: new shutters, tuck-pointing, paint, gutters and landscaping. Original slate was salvaged from the rear elevation for the more visible front.

The President’s Award went to Columbus Recreation and Parks Director Alan McKnight and his team, who have worked with the Society for more than 30 years on such projects as the Schiller Park Master Plan, holiday lights at Frank Fetch Park, and planting trees and erecting lamp posts at Schiller. Alan and his team help bring us spaces to play and to find solitude.

This year, the Society added a fifth award: The Ambassador’s Award honored Brett and Andrea Cambern. Central Ohio knew Andrea as a reporter on Channel 10 news. We knew Andrea and Brett as neighbors who chaired Haus and Garten Tour and PreTour, restored a series of homes, emceed our 50th birthday party and advocated every day for the work of the German Village Society.

TEA PROFITS LEAP 60 PERCENTThe first rule of journalism: don’t bury the lead. Tea 43206 raised $15,484 in 2012, a 60 percent increase over the first year! German Village Society is grateful to German Village Guest House for creating this phenomenal event.

This year, under the leadership of the Historic Preservation Committee, Tea 43206 became Historic Preservation Weekend. Thanks to an introduction to Rhonda Sincavage of the National Register for Historic Trust, by Villager Kristie Nicolosi, German Village Society was able to sponsor a Friday, August 17, evening panel discussion called “Happiness Is…Historic Preservation.” On Saturday morning, August 18, HPC joined our Board of Trustees and our partner boards for a special Q&A breakfast with Ms. Sincavage.

Mayor Michael Coleman put the icing on the cake when he not only arrived at Tea 43206 to accept a framed copy of the American Planning Association’s “10 Great Places in America” recognition, but led a chorus of “Happy Birthday” to host and Society Vice President Darci Congrove.

Civic Relations CommitteeThe German Village Society Streetscape and Civic Relations committees worked together to apply for Urban Infrastructure Recovery Funds (UIRF) for a preliminary engineering study and survey for a comprehensive plan for South Third Street from Livingston Avenue to Schiller Park This request would be step two in our process to improve safety, stabilize deteriorating infrastructure and restore the historic feel of our Third Street artery, following on work completed in 2010 by Kinzelman Kline Gossman. With the full backing of our neighbors, we are requesting a preliminary engineering study (estimated cost: $400,000) to help us understand what each element of our priority list costs. UIRF dollars would put in motion a project that does three main things along South Third Street: improves safety, updates deteriorating infrastructure and restores the historic feel to the corridor. On another front, Police Luncheons, held every last Thursday of the month and moderated by Jerry Glick, continue to offer positive interaction between residents and the 11th Precinct.

Development Committee The Development Committee tackled the significant issue of the funding model for the Society. It was first necessary to establish some policies for anticipated donations. These included the recommendation to the Board and the enactment of policies for the Society related to gift acceptance and naming rights. These formed the basis for future development activities. As we considered funding models and perspectives on giving for the Society, we determined that having an annual funding drive in conjunction with membership would be consistent with the charitable goals of the Society. Reaching out to corporations and individuals both within and outside of the geographic boundaries of the Village would enable us to solicit funds based upon our charitable mission of historic preservation and education. We are developing materials and targeted requests to further that mission and goal. Further, we are seeking to employ the services of a professional fundraising consultant. We also plan a mini-capital campaign to remodel the Visitors Center and make it a truly engaging space for our educational, mission-centric work.

Finance Committee The committee created and the Board accepted an investment policy, as well as a committee charter. The committee also hired Huntington National Bank to invest our savings, and the committee played a role in identifying our new bookkeeping contract. The committee reviewed and approved the outside audit of the Society’s financial books for the year of 2011, and reviewed and approved the 990 form.

German Village Business Community (GVBC)GVBC renewed a collaborative spirit through the support of more than 120 members and focused on adding value to membership and putting an emphasis on marketing. A fresh new design, some advertising, and a listing for each and every one of our members in the new map/brochure helped promote German Village to locations throughout Ohio. Members beefed up advertising efforts through new online and print ads on Facebook, Columbus Alive, OSU football program and the Quarter Horse Congress programs. GVBC enhanced communications efforts with creation of eXplore German Village, a monthly external newsletter launched in August that highlights business specials and events in the Village for an audience that doesn’t necessarily live here. Art Crawl, the annual event that turns Macon Alley garages into galleries, more than doubled its attendance over any other year and generated $12,000 of revenue.

COMMITTEEWORK

Arts CommitteeThe Arts Committee formed mid-year to give formality to the emerging success of two years’ worth of arts exhibitions in Brent Warner Fest Hall. Hoping to build on that momentum and make Fest a regular place for art well into future years, the Arts Committee wrote an artist agreement and artist solicitation. Members are already booking for 2013 shows – so stay tuned for invitations to see new works.

Nora Dorrian volunteers as a ticket-taker during GVBC’s Art Crawl.

Group tours nearly doubled over last year to 40, including this docent-led tour taken

by Powell Women’s Club.

Historic Preservation CommitteeThe Historic Preservation Committee set goals for digitizing archives and house files, creating an oral histories project and creating workshops focused on both renovation and maintenance of our German Village properties. Through a portion of the proceeds of the very successful 2011 Tea 43206, we were able to purchase a new software package, PastPerfect, which allows us to document our archives and house files with digital images. Look for web-based access to browse these treasures from home. Our oral histories project won a $5,000 grant from the Ohio Humanities Council, which will allow us to interview and document the stories of our community by those who experienced the early days of German Village even before it was the German Village we now know.

Long-Range Planning CommitteeThe Long-Range Planning Committee continues to undertake projects that improve and increase the desirability of our neighborhood in the eyes of others. Acting as the Village’s “think tank,” LRP spun off last year’s Aging In Place Initiative into its own group. Village Connections formed its own board and is seeking 501c3 status. LRP is also working with neighboring communities to better the public education options on the Southside of downtown. We are working with School Board members, Columbus Schools employees, a similar group in Clintonville, and various community leaders to develop a strategy that allows for a radical improvement of schooling options in German Village. Our goal is to prevent the loss of dynamic young families as their children grow. In conjunction with graduate students from OSU on a few projects, we are working on ways to make German Village more accessible to visitors and friendly to business – seeking the right business-residential mix.

Marketing CommitteeThe committee secured Board backing for brand guidelines in March. Originally developed by Ologie, a respected Columbus branding agency, the guidelines are helping us create clear and compelling communications. Our goal is for German Village to become a brand that is recognized locally, regionally and nationally and that authentically connects our community with a wide range of audiences. The primary logo is the Open Door, which represents the neighborhood and its welcoming spirit. Fonts, the color palette and graphic elements are used in combination to balance our traditional and historic foundation with our modern and contemporary community. To date, the brand has been successfully incorporated into a wide range of materials used to promote events, membership, tourism and development projects, including this annual report.

Members of the FUN Committee, which is part of Parks, Public Spaces and Community Events, bowl together at Wayne Webb Bowling last spring.

OFFICE REMODELThe office core and kitchen, along with the phone system, were thoroughly modernized last winter on the interest and passion of seven donors.

David Schooler and Mary Connolly-Ross, longtime Maintenance Committee members, teamed up to remodel the offices and kitchen. David had a passion for the project that made our Haus a home, so he financed it himself. David knows the power of a great community space, and he was close, personal friends with the great community men themselves - Fred and Howard. These factors propelled David to find that the project was worth his investment.

Mary, a professional interior designer, anted up her talent at no charge. The Board set priorities: Could we have more flex space for meetings? Could we have better security for financial and sensitive files? Could we make the lives of our staff more aesthetically pleasing?

Mary and David ran with it. They created dedicated space for the historic preservation work we do, and made the new space secure with discreet storage for one of the Society’s greatest treasures - our house files. They reworked the kitchen area to create additional meeting space that balances an utterly modern design with practicality - the finishes hide dirt, and the floor tiles snap out for one-at-a-time replacement if something gets spilled.

And then they brought in help. The first thing everyone notices about the new office space is the glass doors! Sandy Kight and David Boothby put in their money for glass doors. Janet and Sid Druen didn’t just offer up the name and phone number of their plumber, Sid made the call himself, met the expert here while he worked, then the Druens picked up the check!

George Lekorenos, owner of Alarm One Security, donated state-of-the-art phone technology and then donated his time and expertise to install it and get it up and running.

Membership CommitteeThe committee created the biennial Directory, and the popularity of the book drove ad sales to a new high. The committee raised nearly $84,000, which directly supports operations and programs. Every committee member contributed to signing hundreds of membership renewal letters and made follow-up calls or emails. Members gathered last winter to welcome new folks and at the same time enjoy an art exhibit with works from member Bunny Koff. Special thanks to the now-retired Bob Jackson for all of his hours spent at the Meeting Haus; and to Russ Arledge for learning the new database in which we track members.

Parks, Public Spaces and Community Events Committee (PPSCE) The beautiful parks, the lovely flower boxes and tree-lined streets,

and the scores of community-wide events that bind us together and draw visitors to our neighborhood are the focus of the German Village Society’s Parks, Public Spaces, and Community Events Committee (PPSCE). The committee fosters cooperation among all groups and organizations that are affiliated with the parks and public spaces in German Village, as well as those that organize social, cultural and recreational activities in the neighborhood. From the playground improvements at Schiller Park and the Third Sunday Concerts in Frank Fetch Park, to the 2012 season for Actors Theatre, and the tomato crop from the Village Farm at Livingston United Methodist Church, each month’s agenda was jam-packed with updates. The committee also organized orientation meetings and materials for new members, and hosted briefings and published updates for those who were unable to attend regularly. Some of the most valuable exchanges members have are with the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department leaders who attend each meeting.

Streetscape CommitteeSee Civic Relations’ report on page 6 for updates on the Third Street Master Plan. While committee members wait for a funding decision from the city, they developed a Streetscape Amenities Master Plan that will provide the German Village Society with an opportunity to communicate and enforce the long term vision for all future amenities along Third Street. The Master Plan will help to ensure that the German Village Society will make wise short-term decisions that will preserve the long-term integrity of Third Street. The committee has reviewed design concepts for planters, newspaper containers, bike racks, benches and waste receptacles. The first project in this list to come to fruition is newspaper boxes on Third Street. We await news of a grant application to purchase the boxes.

Technology CommitteeThe committee launched www.m.germanvillage.com – our very own mobile-friendly website, which has attracted more than 18,000 visits in under a year. GPS-enabled applications assist with map integration and way-finding features within German Village. The mobile site was made possible by a generous donation from Bill Lager and Jessica Lager. “Neighbors4Neighbors” had a face lift. Our 4-year-old web design (fairly old in web-speak) also needed a facelift. After seeking out proposals for assistance in refreshing the look and placement of information on our website, OrbitDesign was chosen to help us accomplish the project. Frank Fetch Park is kept beautiful by a

team of volunteers and stays in touch with GVS through the PPSCE committee.

Members of the Mailing Team gather to send membership reminders, voting ballots and more.

A TOAST TO TOUR 2012The Haus und Garten Tour and PreTour are critical to the Society’s budget and their success allows the Board of Trustees and staff to provide historic preservation and education programs that serve our mission. This year’s event, led by Chairs John and Jan Clark, Board liaison Darci Congrove, PreTour Chair Anne Gallutia and event coordinator Adrianne Mellen Ramstack, netted $86,954.81. Heartfelt thanks for all everyone did to make Tour weekend a terrific success!

Visitor Center volunteer, membership coordinator, tour guide and Board member, Bob Jackson has truly done it all now that he can add 2012 Honorary Tour Chair to his mile-long list of ways he’s helped the German Village Society.

German Village Gothic: PreTour revelers tried Grant Wood’s classic “American Gothic” on for size at Heather Densmore and Matt Sanders house.

After hosting 53 years of Haus und Garten Tours, we have lots of pictures of people waiting on line and of course 2012 proved no different! Here, tour-goers wait to see the recently renovated Beck Place condos, a dramatic example of adaptive use.

This year’s Tour saw the return of Marketplatz in Schiller Park. A much-loved home-and-garden-themed sale in the park, Marketplatz showcases not only unique wares but also historic Schiller Park itself.

GOOSEBUMPS GRANTEDFriends of Schiller set out a year ago to put us in the city spotlight, when the committee decided to create German Village’s bicentennial celebration. On the power of sheer grit and volunteer determination, it put together a terrific, whiz-bang weekend of activities that saw the Schiller statue get a nightlight for the first time; followed by a day celebrating the many historical moments celebrated over 200 years in the park.

Since the Schiller monument was a gift to the city from the German community in 1891, it is only fitting that the Friends of Schiller Park would give Schiller his shine as part of the city’s bicentennial celebration. The Friends of Schiller Park, led in this endeavor by Katharine Moore, Connie Swain and Ann Lilly, applied for and received grant funding for lighting, signage and landscaping near the statue.

Villager and former Columbus Mayor Greg Lashutka served as master of ceremonies for the official lighting.

Under the direction of German Village resident David Brown, One Hundred Voices sang “Shed a Little Light,” “We Are Family” and “I Call Columbus Home” as the Schiller monument was lit for the first time.

Alphorns sound in Schiller Park honoring our neighborhoods’ earliest settlers, their roots and their legacy.

Part of the weekend festivities included living history stations throughout the park. The Columbus Kinderchor helped tell the story of the Umbrella Girl.

Though the threat of rain moved the Dessert and Dancing on Deshler event off of Deshler to the Meeting Haus, the party was no less fun! Here, Kent Collins, Jennifer Li, Brigid Butler, Vijaya Iyer and Jeff Smith join in the festivities.

FOOTIN’ FOR THE FUTURE

Five Villagers ran the Cap City Half Marathon on May 5. Pictured below, Ken and Beth Flower, Director Shiloh Todorov, and Trustees Sarah Irvin Clark and Norm Hall, raced on behalf of their favorite charity - the German Village Society.

One donor, Sarah Benson, set the bar - stepping in at the top of the campaign to offer $2,500 in matching funds to spur other donations. More than 100 individual donors stepped forward to support the team, which raised more than $7,500 for historic preservation and education efforts, which included:

• More workshops and exhibits in Fest Hall to give neighbors a reason to congregate and learn together.

• Updated group tours, which started when a group of volunteers sat down to research fresh stories and continues as we create marketing tools to help invite visitors to the Village and buy advertising to spread the word that this Village is a leader in historic preservation and we are ready to welcome you here!

• Director’s outreach funds as Todorov networks with city, state and regional leaders; as well as like-minded leaders of affinity groups.

• New development tools to change our business model away from weather-dependent events.
