It brings together scientists from Germany and the MENA region to discuss and foster innovative scientific ideas and interdisciplinary and inter- sectoral solutions. In the scope of COSIMENA the DAAD Cairo Office realises various interdisciplinary events on current issues in science and innovation, such as workshops, conferences, round-table dis¬- cussions, the German Science Night, the German Science Day, and the COSIMENA Summer School. These activities aim to bring together stakeholders from science, business, go- vernment, and civil society, as well as support young scientists in their access to knowledge. Research interests span from the development and function of Egyptian settlements, landscapes, and ritual spaces as well as spheres of everyday life. Another important focus is on the perception of Ancient Egypt and its role in the formation of an Egyptian and European identity. The DAI Cairo has a strong commitment in capacity building, demonstrated by its annually offered training workshops and study trips to Germany. Additionally, almost each DAI field pro- ject offers training for young Egyptian archaeologists. As part of the biggest German institution in the field of archa- eology, the publication department of the DAI provides an im- portant platform for scholars to publish and discuss archaeolo- gical results with its annually published multilingual journals and monographs. With its research facilities, its important library as well as its event programme, the Cairo Department is open to scholars and the public. The event programme includes confe- rences and public lectures.

COSIMENA (Clusters of Scientific Innovation in the Middle East and North Africa) aims to tackle common global chal-lenges, such as cli¬mate change, population growth or water scarcity, by fostering scientific collaboration in the field of its seven issue-driven clusters: agriculture, cultural heritage, eco-nomy, energy, health, urbanism, and water. It brings together scientists from Germany and the MENA region to discuss and foster innovative scientific ideas and interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral solutions. In the scope of COSIMENA the DAAD Cairo Office realises various interdisciplinary events on current issues in science and innovation, such as workshops, conferences, round-table dis¬-cussions, the German Science Night, the German Science Day, and the COSIMENA Summer School. These activities aim to bring together stakeholders from science, business, go-vernment, and civil society, as well as support young scientists in their access to knowledge.

Smart Cities – Building the Cities of Tomorrow (english)

At the start of the 20th century, just 10 percent of the world‘s population lived in cities. Today this figure already stands at 50 percent. By the end of this century, humanity will be an overwhelmingly urban species. The Urban Age has begun. But what should the cities of the future look like? How should they function? Urban planners are broadly in agreement that they should be green, efficient, technologically advanced, and above all sustainable, and to this end are planning the smart cities of the future.

National Geographic Megafactories

– Almarai (arabic)

We go behind the scenes and uncover what it takes to run the largest integrated dairy company in the world. Two massive bottling plants and six Mega farms run 24 hours a day, chur-ning out milk, yogurts, juices, and over 400 other products. Starting with a herd of 128,000 Holstein cows that pump mil-lions of liters of milk each day, milk is processed in the factory, before being used as an ingredient in an array of different pro-ducts. From the farm to the supermarket shelf, the show follows the Al Marai manufacturing process from start to finish. @IMDb

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz – The Last Universal Genius (english)

November 2016 marked the 300th anniversary of the death of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. He was a philosopher, mathematici-an, historian, diplomat, lawyer and much more besides. Leibniz ranks as the last universal genius. His discoveries and revolutio-nization of the number system first made computers, the Internet and social networks at all possible. The documentary portrays the genius Leibniz in his time and repeatedly transports him to the present. Different persons whose work would be inconcei-vable without Leibniz express their views in the documentary.

Words of GreetingI am glad to welcome you to the second edition of the German Science Night in Cairo. With over 800 participants, the first edition in 2017 was a great success and we would like to build on this success. In this year we not only have a third location for the event – the DAI – but we are able to offer an interactive programme in the DAAD Science Garden. The German Science Night in Cairo is a synergy of the concept of the German annual event: Long Night of the Sciences (Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften) and the special atmosphere of long and festive Ramadan nights – hence it represents the aim of COSIMENA to foster collaboration and fuse the German and Egyptian science landscape even further. This innovative format serves to stimulate discussion, inspire ideas, and strengthen the visibility of research. The evening also aims to arouse interest and curiosity about scientific topics and a scientific perspective on everyday objects.Tonight’s event occurs as part of COSIMENA, our initiative to foster scientific collaboration on the driving challenges of today’s world in vari-ous thematic clusters. We hope that the diverse programme, with various formats and presenting multiple disciplines will spark your curiosity and inspire you.We are deeply thankful for the great support of all contributors and partner institutions, as well as the Zamalek Cinema, which made this event possible. Ramadan Kareem and my best wishes,Dr. Roman LuckscheiterDirector of the DAAD Cairo Office
