The Language Center of the University of Vienna welcomes you to the summer intensive courses 2018!

Since 1922, a high quality of teaching and a wide variety of courses make us the number one choice. Morethan 9000 participants attend our German courses each year. Our course levels comply with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), thus ensuring international comparability. Ourhighly motivated, educated and experienced team of instructors will enhance your learning process bymeans of communication-based and student-oriented teaching techniques. We are also an examination center for ÖSD (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom). We offer these exams on August 22 and 23, 2018.Our courses take place on the campus of the University of Vienna and at other university buildings located inthe city center.We are also happy to arrange accommodation for you in conveniently located student housing. Our summer course program is complemented by a broad range of optional excursions and leisure activities.

Afternoon activities can only be booked and paid for at our main office in Vienna.Prices range from € 10 to € 80; some activities are free of charge.

Accommodation in student residencesAccommodation can be arranged in single or twin rooms (single beds) on a self-catering basis in conveniently located student dormitories. You will find numerous affordable restaurants on/near the university campus.Rooms can only be booked for the entire course period (27 nights in July/August, 20 nights in September).Please note that arrivals and departures are only possible on the days stated in our brochure. Additionalnights – when booking two or three courses in a row – are charged separately.

Facilities • Apartments up to 4 rooms may have one shared shower and toilet.• There is a communal kitchen on each floor.• Bedlinen is provided.• Laundry facilities are available.

Kitchenware and towels are not provided.

Please note that the reservation of your room iseffected upon receipt of your payment only. Afterwards, a letter of confirmation with the address of thedormitory will be sent to you via email.Please note that bank transfers from non-EU countries may take up to ten business days.

PaymentOnline paymentsYou can pay online by credit card (VISA, Mastercard, American Express) or SOFORT banking.

Bank TransferAll banking transfer charges and fees must be covered by the participant. You are therefore requested tosend all payments marked “free of charges for the payee”. Any balance or surplus in transfer charges willbe settled in cash at our office.

Terms of cancellationCancellations must be confirmed by the Language Center in order to become effective.• Cancellation of the course • up to three business days prior to the beginning of the course – no cancellation fee • two business days or less before the start of the course as well as after the start of the course, and in case of non-attendance – full fees will be charged.• Cancellation of room reservations • up to 21 days before the course is scheduled to start – no cancellation fee

• 20 to 14 days before the course is scheduled to start – € 200 cancellation fee will be charged, the rest of the payment will be refunded. • 13 days or less before the course is scheduled to start, or in case of non-arrival – accommodation fees become due and payable in full.

Course levelsAll course levels include conversation, reading, writing, listening comprehension, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary extention activities.

German A1: Phase 1 und Phase 2 For participants with no or very little competence in German. These courses lead to Level A1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).Objectives: Reading and listening comprehension of simple texts; giving basic personal information; establishing contacts with others; taking part in simple conversations; acquiring funda- mental vocabulary and learning basic grammar structures that enable elementary spoken and written communication in everyday situations.

German A2: Phase 1 und Phase 2 These courses lead to Level A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).Objectives: Communication in familiar, everyday situations; reading and listening comprehension of the core message of texts involving topics and requirements of everyday life and familiar situations; writing elementary texts about familiar topics and personal interests.

German B1: Phase 1 und Phase 2 These courses lead to Level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).Objectives: Communication on general topics; means of verbal expression for more complex con- versations; writing of basic official documents; comprehension of general content of simple radio or television broadcasts; command of basic vocabulary on general topics.

German B2: Phase 1 und Phase 2 These courses lead to Level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).Objectives: Further development of reading and listening strategies for enhanced comprehension of complex texts on abstract and concrete topics; boosting vocabulary for clear and ade- quate action and reaction in written and spoken communication on a wide spectrum of subject matters.

German C1: Phase 1 und Phase 2 These courses lead to Level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).Objectives: Enhancement of written and spoken instruments of communication, thus enabling effective and flexible use of the language within the realm of public/professional life and/or in education and studies. Understanding complex written and audio materials from different media, participating in discussions, drafting detailed and explicit written statements and comments on complex topics.

German C2: Phase 1 und Phase 2 These courses lead to Level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).Objectives: Honing of written and spoken expression for spontaneous, fluent and to a large extent correct enunciation in the context of discussions and presentations. Focus on complex literary, scientific and geo-political texts (both written and audio) for enhanced com- prehension and expression of fine nuances.
