You, too, can be the master of your own destiny by starting a small business if you are passionate about what you

do, according to Joel Lipchitz, a chartered account in Keswick.

This was the key message shared at the South Lake Community Futures Development Corporation Tuesday, as

Georgina residents celebrated small business week, a Canadawide dedication this week organized by the Bank of

Canada and running for 30 years.

“Small businesses are basically the driving force of the economy,” said host of Southlake Corporation, Brandon

Simon, adding most people work in small businesses as opposed to larger corporations that usually get all the

attention.

The company works in partnership with business owners, the town and other agencies in Georgina to host

seminars and events for people who either already run their own small business or are thinking of starting one to

provide people with a lot of good advice and information that will help them on their way.

Small and medium-sized businesses are the engine of the Canadian economy, data shows. They make up 97.5

per cent of all companies and employ the lion’s share of workers in Canada.

This year’s small business celebration features hundreds of activities organized across Canada and will attract

more than 10,000 business people.

During the week, entrepreneurs come together at events such as conferences, luncheons and trade fairs to learn,

network and socialize with their peers.

Tuesday’s event in Keswick had two entrepreneurs share stories about the challenges and obstacles they faced

while starting their small businesses.

Mr. Lipchitz, of the Lipchitz and Associates Chartered Accounting Firm on The Queensway, and Joanna Wiseberg,

a Queensville resident who owns and operates Red Scarf Promotions and Red Scarf Equestrian, each spoke to

the crowd for one hour.

Mr. Lipchitz took charge of the small crowd first. He spoke about the benefits to creating your own business and

why he enjoys it so much.

“You have control to be successful or not,” the 20-year Georgina resident said.

“You also have the control to run the business in a way that makes you happy. To me, if I get up in the morning

and I’m not looking to doing whatever it is I’m doing for a job, that’s work. If I get up in the morning and I’m excited

because I get to do some really great things and I get to help people, that makes me feel happy and good about

myself. It also makes my life a lot happier. As long as you’re doing something you like to do and the business is

successful, it’s great. If the business isn’t successful, it’s a nightmare.”

Mr. Lipchitz also shared his knowledge of income tax and HST and the importance of accurate documentation.

Following a brief dinner break, Ms Wiseberg came to the front of the tiny room and told her story.

She also focused a portion of her talk on the significance of learning and understanding technology in today’s

world, especially when attracting potential customers, clients and suppliers.

“I was in business for a number of years, but then experienced a downturn,” said the owner, designer and

manufacturer of the high-end equestrian luggage and travel bags. “I had to force myself how to learn a new way of

doing business. I’ve had to modify the way I do business with certain corporations for both of my businesses.

Everything is done online now. It’s no longer face-to-face interactions. I don’t like it, but it’s the reality of today’s

business world.”

Ms Wiseburg continues to participate in social media courses so she can keep up-to-date on everything going on

in technology.

She now has several online business and social networking accounts for her companies and checks each of them

frequently.

She uses the web to promote her two businesses and contact potential clients from all over the world.

The response to both speakers was positive.

“I really enjoyed both of the presentations tonight. It makes you remind yourself of how many hats you have to

wear when you first start a business,” said Trish Foley, owner of Dog Scents, a dog grooming and obedience

training business in Sutton.

“One thing I’ll take away from tonight is the importance of getting on the web. I need to start getting the word out

about what I do. I also want to get involved in the chamber of commerce, because that sounds like a great idea.”
