York Region’s schools got a funding boost of $41 million over the next two years to help repair and renew existing buildings.

The funding was announced Tuesday morning by provincial Education Minister Mitzie Hunter in Vaughan at Joseph A. Gib-son Public School.

The money breaks down to $25 million for the York public board and $16 million for the Catholic board.

The minister said the cash will be used to repair roofs, update HVAC units and mod-ernize electrical and plumbing systems.

Hunter said prior funding commitments to the York boards for repair and renewal funding now total $120 million over the next two years. She added the province will invest an additional $1.1 billion prov-incewide over the next two years for school renewal to bring the total up to $2.7 billion when existing funding is added in.

“This money is urgently needed. A school with a long list of repairs is not serving our students at a level they deserve,” Hunter said.

“This funding means fresh asphalt, new flooring, enhanced play areas and more — all of the little things and some big things that exist in the background of a students everyday experience,” she said.

“It is important for people to know that

Ontario’s world-class education system is being delivered in high-quality facilities.”

She said that since 2003, “our govern-ment has invested more than $14 billion in school infrastructure, including 760 new schools and more than 735 additions and renovations. We’re in the midst of provid-ing more than $12 billion over 10 years to Ontario’s school boards. This funding will help build more new schools in areas of high growth.”

An estimated 3,000 people came out to the opening day of the Georgina Farmers Market at The Link in Sut-ton July 3.

“I am thrilled with the turnout,” said Natalia Zam-mitti, who co-organizes the event with Donna Callfas. “It was amazing and I’m so grateful for all the sup-port.”

Zammitti added the only “issue” was that some ven-dors actually ran out of product, but that only speaks to the overwhelming turnout on the market’s inaugural day.

Moving forward, residents can expect to see the market improve and welcome new additional vendors ‎in the coming weeks, as well as free zumba and live music every Sunday, Zammitti said.

Georgina Mayor Margaret Quirk was one of the lucky ones to snag a few butter tarts before they were all gone. She also cut the ceremonial red ribbon along with organizers, York-Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan and Ward 5 Councillor Dave Harding.

Quirk said she was extremely pleased by the turnout at the grand opening and she expects the market will grow in popularity throughout the summer and fall and continue to offer up a wide selection of local produce, baked goods, arts and crafts and entertainment for the entire family.

“The market is a community focal point where people can come together and enjoy what makes our town such a great place,” Quirk added.

The market runs every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the summer.

The Town of Georgina is in the process of updating its 2009 socio-economic mission and strategic plan.

This update will result in the develop-ment of a comprehensive economic action plan and is set to be completed by the end of June.

This Economic Action Plan will focus on four key strategies for enhancing the eco-nomic vitality of our community while keep-ing in mind the need to protect and provide stewardship of our natural heritage resourc-es, primarily the Lake Simcoe watershed and rural agricultural lands.

The four key strategies focus on business

retention and expansion, enhancing and diversifying the tourism product, leveraging the economic impact of agriculture and agri-tourism and ensuring an investment-ready environment.

There have been a number of key oppor-tunities mentioned throughout the back-ground research that include siting a new Civic Centre together with providing incuba-tor/accelerator space within the business park and may be a catalyst to development within the business park.

This together with growing the sport tour-ism industry and supporting an increased diversity of sporting activities are important considerations in formalizing the scope of the multi-use recreational complex.

The federal government is hosting town hall meetings to get Canadians’ views on the main challenges to Canada’s security, the role of the armed forces in addressing current threats and challenges and the resources and capabilities needed to carry out the armed forces’ mandate.

Despite fears Friday’s wind and rain would dampen festivities and snuff out fireworks, the town’s Cana-da Day celebrations at The ROC cul-minated in a well attended fireworks display July 1.

Helicopter rides also went ahead as planned as part of the town’s cel-ebration of the country’s 149th birth-day.

Free hot dogs, bouncy castles, a kids zone at the ROC chalet and live entertainment rounded out the day’s events, which suffered a bit of a slow start due to rain throughout most of the day heading in to the 2 p.m. start.

Participants also spread their time between events at the chalet, Georgina’s RibFest and demonstra-tions at the Pioneer Village before a 30-minute firework display capped off the night.

EDITORIAL COLUMN

We can’t wait for 15-minute GO service here was some good news for commut-ers in communities located along the Bar-rie GO Transit rail cor-

ridor last month as the province announced its intent to build five new stations as part of Metrolinx’s planned 10-year regional express rail expansion.

If all goes according to plan, one of those new stations would be located at Mulock Drive in Newmarket to serve the town’s growing population and ease some of the burden on the Aurora GO station.

According to Metrolinx, the proposed Mulock station was “evaluated as offering high travel time savings and having a medi-um level of ease of construction and construction affordability.”

In response to the news, New-market Mayor Tony Van Bynen quipped that residents should do a “happy dance”.

What he should have said is “hopeful dance”.

While it appears Metrolinx is fairly confident on the demand and feasibility for a station at Mulock, there’s no guarantee of 15-minute service throughout the day as is planned between Toronto’s Union Station and the Aurora GO Station. Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor is advocating 15-minute service to his community, as have others,

but during the June 24 announce-ment of the station, Transporta-tion Minister Steven Del Duca wasn’t making any promises.

“We’re not saying no, we’re not saying yes. It still requires addi-tional analysis,” he said.

Well, that really nailed it down.Del Duca was also unable to

provide a cost for the stations or even a date for when they will be built, adding the information will become public in the weeks to come.

Here’s hoping the Mulock sta-tion will be built sooner rather than later and that 15-minute service will be part of the pack-age.

Express rail needed to come to northern York Region, not to mention other parts of the GTA, years ago and we can ill afford to wait another 10 years to get moving. With the populations of Newmarket, Aurora and, espe-cially, East Gwillimbury expected to rise considerably over the next 15 years, we need to ensure there is an adequate public transit net-work in place to make it a truly viable alternative to commuting by car, lest we invite the reality of (even more) unbearable conges-tion.

The time for action isn’t now; the time for action was a decade ago. Let’s not wait any longer and put this project, and others like it, on the fast track.

Long lineup brings out the best in all of us

Marney Beck

ave you lined up lately for a new green and white health card or your licence renewal sticker?

I have, and it was an inter-esting, frustrating yet uplifting experience.

I received an official provincial govern-ment notice in the mail a few weeks ago stating that I had exactly 30 days to convert my old red-and-white health card to the new photo ID card.

I had been hoping to avoid such an invi-tation/order, as I loved the fact that the card never expired and it had worked perfectly well for decades — providing me health care access whenever I needed it.

However, in addition to the serious-sounding language used in the Ministry of Health letter, the truth is my beloved card was dog-eared, ripped and held together with tape.

I had to admit it was nearing the end of its plastic lifespan and the new green and white card seemed a safer option.

So, I dutifully gathered the required documentation to bring to my local Service Ontario office.

‘Bring a water bottle,

you’ll be standing a long time.’

I was dreading the task, as the provincial office at Bernard on Yonge Street in Rich-mond Hill always has long lineups. Recently, it had provoked a series of letters to the editor from residents expressing outrage at the lengthy lines, cramped space and over-whelmed staff.

“Bring a water bottle, you’ll be standing a long time,” said one friend. “Just don’t even apply for the green card, keep using your red and white card,” advised someone else, who shall remain nameless.

“Go to the one on Bloomington Road in Aurora,” advised a reader, “there’s lots of room inside; staff are friendly and polite, too!”

Armed with patience and all my needed documents, I arrived at the Richmond Hill Bernard office and was almost pleased to be the first client standing outside the door. In the past, I have often joined a long line of between 10 and 20 people when I need to renew my licence, so to get right up to the door was a bonus.

Within about five minutes, a long line

of about a dozen people formed outside behind me on the hot, humid, sunny day. One was an elderly man with a cane.

Ahead of me in the line inside the air-conditioned offices were parents with squirming children, people filling out forms at a counter and a woman in long robes covering her from head to toe seated in one of only three chairs, with a son or relative standing in line.

The languages spoken represented a mini United Nations, but everyone was polite and friendly. The Asian couple right behind me was a little too friendly, con-stantly giggling at private jokes and bump-ing into me — and apologizing — as they looked at their devices.

As I inched my way to the front of the line, I became aware that one man with a strong Russian accent was giving the elder-ly man with the cane his spot in the line.

Then came an active discussion and much gesturing with the woman seated on the chair, trying to give up her chair to the older man.

Finally, a staff person at one of the counters helpfully waved over the elderly gentleman and said loudly, so all of us could hear, something to the effect that he would be served without waiting in line.

Not a soul objected. How wonderfully Canadian it all was.

Despite the fact the government office was overwhelmed, staff and residents main-tained their composure and showed kind-ness and deference to each other.

After exactly one hour wait, it was my turn and my new health card is now “in the mail” — if we don’t have a postal strike.

ouncil will be meeting throughout the summer working on various issues and reports.

We met on July 5 and had the presentation on the economic

strategy and action plan and discussed the MURC (Multi-Use Recreation Facility).

During July and August and into Septem-ber, council will be dealing with updates on the town’s strategic plan as well as the Lake Drive shoreline jurisdiction ad hoc commit-tee.

There are also statutory public meetings on July 13 and Aug. 10; more information on those can be found at georgina.ca under the planning – public notices section:

Later in the summer, we will be receiving the long-term financial plan that will assist us in making decisions for the town’s full long-range financial picture. Also, we will be discussing staff’s review of the provincial co-ordinated land use planning review that has been working its way through a public process since early 2015.

Council will be receiving a report that will look at various options for the parking of leisure vehicles within the town. Staff will be seeking council’s direction as to the next steps in that review.

Council also authorized a ward boundary review earlier this year and public meetings will be held this summer/fall.

CCouncil has busy summer ahead

To view the council agendas of upcom-ing meetings or the post-meeting highlights, visit our website.

The town page here in the Advocate also lists upcoming meetings and public meeting notices.

Remember, our meetings are open to the public, unless we have to go into closed session to deal with issues authorized by the Municipal Act.

We welcome your attendance at our meetings or you can send any member of council an e-mail or give us a call - we would love to hear from you.

The Georgina Mayor’s Golf Classic man-aged to cut some pretty big cheques after teeing off its inaugural running earlier this month.

The amount lines were as big as the cer-emonial cheques Monday at council cham-bers when Georgina Mayor Margaret Quirk presented Georgina Trades Training Inc. (GTTI - The Training Centre) and the Georgi-na Community Food Pantry the net proceeds of the golf tournament held at The Briars Golf Club June 1.

Each organization received $18,500 thanks to the generosity of the golf tourna-ment’s many sponsors.

“On behalf of town council, I am extreme-ly pleased that these two vital non-profit organizations benefited from funds raised at

the inaugural golf tournament,” Quirk said, adding her thanks to all of the tournament sponsors, attendees and volunteers, as well as the organizing committee, led by execu-tive assistant to mayor and council Tammi Roberts, for making the event an incredible success.

GTTI executive director David Geene said the funds will be put to good use in sup-porting Georgina residents, providing them with access and training opportunities for employment.

Georgina Community Food Pantry exec-utive director Catherine Cook added her thankss, noting the generous donation to the pantry will help support its fresh food program and improve food security across the community.

The annual Georgina Mayor’s Golf Clas-sic is intended to raise funds for local nonr-profit and charitable organizations.

Firing up the “cue” for the Canada Day holiday took on new meaning during this past weekend’s first Georgina RibFest at The ROC.

Despite a soggy start Friday, the three-day event, hosted by Northern Heat, offered up plenty of sticky, award-winning ribs from Jack the Ribber, Fire Island BBQ and, new this year to the Northern Heat Rib Series, Oak & Barrell, bringing the authentic whiskey rib

sauce all the way from Chilliwack, British Columbia.

A rotating roster of bands kept The ROC grounds rocking while the kids enjoyed the inflatables and everyone sampled some of the funnel cakes, deep-fried Mars bars and bloomin’ onions, to name just a few treats.

Despite some grumblings over long line-ups and the stars and stripes being displayed on Canada’s birthday, most of the throngs of people who attended gave sticky thumbs up for the event.

First RibFest a tasty success

An estimated $30-million multi-use recre-ation complex (MURC) got one step closer to being “shovel ready” after council committed this week to nailing down a site location by early next year.

While not denying the future need for a MURC in the south end of Keswick, Ward 4 Councillor Frank Sebo questioned the “per-ceived sense of urgency” during discussions regarding the proposed recreational facility in light of a number of factors.

“Several years ago, we had the opportu-nity to move forward on the MURC, but the Town of Georgina went in a different direc-tion,” he said, referring to the decision not to partner with the YMCA on a pool facility a number of years ago, as well as construction of The ROC.

In addition, a number of departmental reviews and master plans expected by the end of this year will all factor in to the eventu-al size of the MURC with potential phased-in modules as a result and the resulting size of the property required to accommodate them — the most significant of which will address if a new civic centre should or will be built, and where, pending the recommendations of a study expected to come before council in October.

New information since the town’s 2014 recreational facility needs study, which rec-ommended a MURC facility featuring an

Council will select site for $30M recreation complex next year

aquatics facility, double gymnasium with walking track, seniors and youth lounges, fitness studio and ancillary spaces for minor sports organizations and food and beverage services, is also a factor, including the fact a third of estimated users coming from East Gwillimbury may not know that East Gwil-limbury plans to build its own recreational centre in 2020.

“This is a big-ticket item, this is a big deci-sion and we need to ensure that we assess it fully,” Sebo said. “It’s not so much a matter of being passed since we’re doing studies, it’s more a matter of prioritizing. A third of

our users aren’t going to be there and growth in Georgina is taking longer than originally forecasted.”

Ward 1 Councillor Naomi Davison agreed with the need to fully assess all pieces of the puzzle and ensure sound business and financial plans are put in place for the facil-ity, but added the “rush” applied only to a site location.

“I am getting very nervous about how we are going about getting this facility and the delays we are having with respect to studies,” Davison said, adding the longer the town waits, the more expensive the

eventual costs will be.“The reason I want us to move forward

with this big step is to become that magic ‘shovel ready’,” she said, referring to the fact potential federal or provincial grant money does not come with generous three-year windows for municipal projects.

“You have six weeks to apply and be shov-el ready and if you aren’t, you don’t get,” she said, adding location is an obvious key factor of being shovel ready.

Always slated for the south end of Kes-wick, the town has been looking in the north-ern section of the Simcoe Landing subdi-vision, south of Glenwoods Avenue, with preliminary discussions being held with the developer.

Despite the fact a south Keswick location is not central for Pefferlaw and Sutton area residents, the rationale to date has been not only does the burgeoning south end not have any town facilities, but it is also the anticipated home to much of the forecasted growth for the municipality.

“We are looking at essentially providing all of the resources missing in south Keswick and they will be noticed more once we start building up that population,” Davison said.

Despite his objections, Sebo did vote with the rest of council members in favour of a site being selected for the MURC by the first quarter of next year, as well as to include funding for a MURC design in the 2017 bud-get discussions.

It has been recommended that an aquatics facilty be part of the proposed $30-million multi-use recreation complex.

Treating customers like family is the overriding principle at Ultimate Car & Truck — Georgina’s refinishing and collision centre.

“A lot of people know me around town and the way I do business,” says owner Bryon Terveld.

“I stand behind my work and treat my customers fairly.”

And that takes on extra meaning, especially since Bryon is the hands-on guy actually doing the work backed by more than 20 years in the industry which had garnered him a stellar repu-tation for workmanship.

Competitive pricing, exceptional work and environmentally friendly products are also hallmarks of the business, located on the east side of Hwy. 48 just north of Ravenshoe Road.

The 2,000 sq.ft. auto body centre opened its doors in 2009, specializing in collision repair, service, refinishing and body work, as well as offering an extensive line of environmentally friendly products including a water-based paint that reduces toxins and pollutants.

It was also one of the first shops to offer paintless dent and scratch re-moval.

It boils down to quality service and going above and beyond for your cus-tomers, says Bryon, adding that can be especially appreciated when it comes to handling insurance claims.

“We work with our customers dur-ing what can be a very stressful time, especially if they are dealing with out-of-pocket expenses,” says Bryon.

“There are always solutions and we make it our business to come up with the right ones for our customers.”

He also reiterates that if it’s your in-surance claim, it is your choice where you go for service.

“A lot of people don’t know they don’t have to go with the referred shop their insurance company recom-mends,” explains Bryon, adding you can choose which shop you want to perform your vehicle’s repair, even if it is an insurance claim.

Good food shared with good company isalways an occasion to be savoured.Regrettably, for most the harried lifestylesof today don’t always allow for this luxury. In an ideal world all your meals would bejoyful events; your taste buds teased andspoilt for choice with an abundance oflocal ingredients, served fresh in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Fortunately for thecommunity of Carlisle (just a few minutesnorth of Waterdown) and the surroundingarea, local resident Angela Checchia, dreamed of creating a community based, Italian inspired bistro reminiscent of old worldideals and philosophies.

Born to an Italian family and raised in the restaurant industry, Angela (mother, wife, triathlete and entrepreneur) instinctively knew that the 100 year old landmark buildingon the four corners of Carlisle was destined for greater heights. One day, whilst eatingice-cream with her 3 year old and watching the cars go by, it occurred to her that the carsgoing by could be stopping at her bistro. It wasn’t long before numbers were negotiated, permits issued and Cascata Bistro was born.

Following the farm to table philosophy which supports local farmers by using locallygrown seasonal produce when available, all of the menu items at the award winningCascata Bistro are handmade, ensuring only fresh quality ingredients are used. TogetherAngela and the bistro’s chef continuously strive to create new, delicious and enticingcombinations -often using herbs and vegetables from the bistro’s own kitchen garden.

Special events hosted include wine pairing dinners, specialty brunches and weekly liveentertainment. For contests and more information, visit Cascata Bistro on Facebook.

Fresh local ingredients mixed with the traditional flavours of authentic Italian cuisine area winning combination. Especially when paired with friendly service in an eclecticatmosphere. BIBLE PROPHECYAND BRITAINMany Christian Study Groups have maintained that Britain had to leave the EuropeanUnion. WHY? It is a matter of Bible Prophecy spoken some 3000 years ago.

There is an important part Britain must play out when Christ returns to establish theKingdom of God in Israel, and the prophet Isaiah makes reference to this in chapter 60:9 “and the ships of Tarshish shall bring thy sons from far”. They will not oppose thisnew government, but rather assist. The phrase: “Merchants of Tarshish” referred to inScripture has been equated with Britain.

However, the Bible speaks of a group of nations who will oppose Christ and Psalm 2shows how the kings of the earth set themselves against Christ and consult togetherhow to break up the rule and authority of Jesus. The book of Revelation (17:12) speaksof these same nations “shall make war with the Lamb (Jesus), and the Lamb shallovercome them, for he is the King of kings, and Lord of lords”.

We live in exciting times as Bible Students have long expected Britain to leave theEuropean Union, and the nations to line up for and against God’s people, the nationof Israel.
