It has far reaching implications across a number of areas: placing advertisements in papers to recruit staff, the interview process and questions asked will be looked at, ensuring children are given appropriate responsibility and support in making decisions affecting their lives will be addressed, protective behaviour lessons reinforced and keeping parents and care givers informed of current concerns are some of the considerations to note. Pedal Prix A huge congratulations to Mr Gibson and the Pedal Prix team who competed in the WA Pedal Prix competition on Sunday. GMAS came 26 out of 43 teams which is a great achievement considering the majority of teams had pedal cars valued in excess of $5000. Thank you also to Mr David Windsor who assisted with the pit crew and Mrs Kristin Miles who helped out with the marshalling. Maybe next year we could enter two teams! Early Childhood Open Day On Tuesday we held an Open Day in Early Childhood where we invited people to “join in” with some lessons in Little Georgies and Kindergarten. It was a very successful event and hopefully this will generate more enrolments in Early Childhood. Well done to Mrs Campbell and her team on a very well received day.

Hope everyone has a great week and ‘Go Dockers’ for the derby on the weekend! Mr Phil Deroost Acting Deputy Principal

On Tuesday morning I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Early Childhood Centre during Open Day. The atmosphere of children being guided into being independent, helpful, caring and absolutely delightful little people was indeed a joy to behold. I was invited to make a hand puppet of my favourite storybook character. Now here was a challenge indeed as I was handed a paper bag and various decorative objects to complete the task. However, encouraged by Mrs Deb Harrison and my Pre-Primary friends I completed the task, "Snow White" proudly took her place on the pin up board. Walking through the Centre a sign on the door to a classroom caught my eye, it read: We are each unique and beautiful, but together we are a masterpiece! I could not agree more, well done to all at the Early Childhood Centre. Mrs Eleanor Lewin Chair of School Council

Expressions of interest are invited to be submitted in relation to joining the Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Council. In addition to the School Council appointment, the vacancy also relates to the Chair of Buildings & Grounds Sub Committee. All applications will be treated with strict confidence and will be responded to in due course. Closing date for applications: Friday 21st August 2015 should be forwarded to: Mrs Eleanor Lewin Chair of Council Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Post Office Box 920 Busselton: WA 6280

Girls Footy – On Wednesday, the GMAS and MacKillop Girls Football teams duked it out on the GMAS oval in a gritty, physical encounter that resulted in a 31-all draw on full time. The teams have agreed to a re-match in the last week of school. The ball skills displayed and endeavour to earn the ball and tackle were a credit to both sides. There was also a fantastic turnout of students, staff and parents to support the girls. I look forward to game 2. The Three Musketeers – At assembly this week we were treated to a sneak peek of this year’s extravaganza production or The 3 Musketeers. It looks set to be a ‘not to be missed’ event and tickets are still available so don’t miss out on seeing a performance where the GMAS theatrical stars will shine! Well done to all the staff, crew and students who have been involved in all the hours of planning and rehearsals that go into making events like this a success. Thanks also to the Year 10 parents for assisting with supper on the nights. Raising Boys - On Monday 7th September, we are fortunate to have Clark Wight visit the school to present an evening session open to boys and their parents: 6.30–8.00pm MAC. Clark will be covering the following areas:

“A Time to Connect: Knowing, Loving and Understanding our Boys”

What is going on in our boys’ heads, in their bodies, with their peers and all of those things they do that make you wonder … WHY?

Who they are today and how to help them develop to be men of character, love and wholeheartedness.

What parents and the school can do to foster the essential elements of growing up: resilience, empowerment, reflection and finding their own unique voice and gifts. During the day, classes will be treated to other talks by Clark on a range of topics of relevance to their specific age groups. Through a combination of Satterley sponsorship and GMAS Professional Development Funds, none of the sessions incur a charge to the students or parents (and the evening session is open to ALL parents, not just parents of GMAS), so spread the word and don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to see this inspirational speaker. Sailing away to stardom - Caelin Winchcombe (Yr 10) has been competing this week in the Laser Youth World Sailing Championships. After race 6 & 7 Caelin is now at 16th spot. After Race 5 they separated the boys into 3 Divisions: Gold, Silver and Emerald - Caelin is in Gold Division along with 2 other Australian boys. The competition concludes on Friday. An outstanding performance in an International field. Well done Caelin. Mr Steve Treloar Head of Senior School

Student Leader Profile

Hi, my name is Isabella Hancock and I’m the Head Girl of Georgiana Molloy Anglican School. Alicia Day and I are in charge of the school spirit portfolio. I like playing netball and going on relaxing holidays with my family. I applied to be a Leader to give back to the school because I am a Foundation Student, and the school has provided me with so many opportunities. The best part about being a Leader is being able to have a voice to be heard and to make the school the best place possible. Being a Leader gives me a great opportunity to build my confidence in public speaking and develop my leadership skills.

It is going to be a fantastic show, full of fun and outstanding costumes. If you have not bought your ticket yet, please make sure you do. Congratulations to the following students who were presented with Certificates this week - Ella du Preez for a Silver Certificate and Bronze Certificates to Ashlynn Forrest, Chloe Jolley, Shenae McGuinniss, Jayden Ginder, Ashleigh Joliffe, Imogen Wilson, Nicholas Nolan, Shae Cartledge-Giovinazzo, Ava Cahill, Alex Warner, Ashley Eibrink Jansen, Abbie Senbergs, Megan Weed, Jade Connachan and Sarah Scott. St Georges College Residential Program A reminder that Year 9 students must submit applications to be part of this program to me by Friday 21st August. The aim of this program is to inspire and educate regional students allowing them to get a taste of University life whilst staying at St George’s College and enjoy an educational program involving a variety of cultural, historic and scientific sites and institutions in Perth. Middle School Leader Hi, my name is Brent Blakers and I am taking over the position of Middle School Leader for Geographe. I have been a student at GMAS for 8 years and have come to know many students and teachers along the way. I enjoy playing sports; especially soccer. I also like swimming and am a member of the GMAS Swim Club. I applied to become a Leader so I could have a say in things and be involved in helping out at carnivals and activities. I am looking forward to being a Leader for the remainder of the year.

Independence Independence has been our Primary School theme for the past couple of weeks. One way of instilling independence is to remove all support and see whether your child will sink or swim! This seems somewhat extreme and is likely to cause considerable stress and anxiety for many children. Another technique that might be considered slightly more amenable is the scaffolding technique. Michael Grose in a recent parenting article suggested the following: Initially, look for simple, safe options: Allowing your son to go to the public toilet on

his own at the local swimming pool is easier and safer than in a large shopping center. Do activities together. Making a cup of tea or baking with your daughter is a great way

to teach her about safety in the kitchen. Break complex activities into simpler activities. Catching trains with friends on short

trips is good practice for kids who are itching to do some activities with friends without parental supervision.

Obviously these can be extended and adapted to suit the age of the child and the level of independence the individual is at. Most importantly, remember that your child will need to develop their independence at their own pace, you need to encourage this. As a parent, you cannot and should not be there for them every time they face a new challenge. Enjoy the satisfaction of witnessing your child grow and flourish. Year 3M Science 3M enjoyed a Science lesson with 'Scientist Mrs Partridge' this week. We have been learning to sort and classify animals and plants. Mrs Partridge took us to the school veggie patch and we learnt what vegetables belong to what families and their scientific names. We couldn't believe bananas are actually herbs and that peanuts grow underground. Junior School Athletics Carnival Friday 21st August. See program on Page 12 of this What’s On.

I can’t believe how quickly the Term is racing by!

Kindy A headed off to the Busselton Community Indigenous Garden. Students are eagerly learning about our indigenous culture in class, making Didgeridoos, completing Dot Painting and listening to Aboriginal legends. I look forward to hearing all about your wonderful adventure.

This week we opened our Early Childhood classes to the public, to pop in and play for the morning. Thank you to all of those who came to visit. It was lovely to be able to showcase our amazing school to you. I am always so proud of our students and staff on these special days. Visitors commented on how confident and respectful our students are, and how state-of-the-art and engaging our classroom environments are. Well done GMAS Early Childhood!

Having independence and confidence as a little person is so important. It is a priority for us as educators at GMAS, to instill these vital life skills into the hearts and minds of our students.

Confidence is built upon the ability to begin seeing oneself as skilled. A child's confidence is accelerated when parents or adults place their trust and belief in a child. A child will then mirror internally those beliefs. Step by step and day by day a child develops his or her own self-confidence. So many famous individuals have explained that it is confidence that has propelled them to their level of success. Listen to a few here:

"Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself" - Sophia Loren

"Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement" - Golda Meir

"Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit" - E.E. Cummings

Mrs Kathryn Campbell Head of Early Childhood

EARLY CHILDHOODEARLY CHILDHOODEARLY CHILDHOOD

Developing pedestrian skills Children’s ability to understand and make decisions about where to walk and cross the street change as they grow and develop.

Overview for parents and caregivers Children age four to six still are learning what it means to be safe. This age group needs to walk with adults who will make safety a priority. They should always be with an adult while walking. The best way for children to learn is by repeating safe walking skills with an adult. Walk together

Children age four to six: 1. Have limited judgment, making it hard for them to know where or when it is safe to cross the road. 2. Cannot gauge the speed of oncoming traffic. 3. Can be impulsive and lose concentration easily. 4. Have a hard time staying focused on one task, such as crossing the road.

The next few days promise to be very busy: The Busselton City to Surf takes place on Sunday. It looks like GMAS have

almost 50 runners taking part – good luck to you all. Mr and Mrs McDonald from the Secondary School will seek to ‘marshall the troups’ on the day!

Tuesday will see many in the Junior School enjoying the Secondary School Matinee Performance of The Three Musketeers; due to this there will be no Primary School assembly next week.

Tuesday will also see some special guests wandering around the school for Registration purposes. Please make these individuals feel welcome. It is a great opportunity to showcase our school.

Friday is the Junior School Athletics Carnival – I have no doubt Miss Reynolds will oversee another great event. Many thanks also to our wonderful Year 4 parents who will be providing a cake stall and Sausage Sizzle - Sausages just $3.00 and Cakes from only 50c! Parents are also welcome to join us for a morning tea in the MAC.

If you have not done so already, it is not too late to buy tickets for The Three Musketeers on Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening next week.

Barely 2 weeks and it will be Spring, only 8 weeks before Mr Kosicki returns, just 11 weeks until the Rugby World Cup Final and a mere 19 weeks until Christmas. Where better to spend the days than at GMAS! Mr Rob Whirledge Head of Junior School

Drama Evening

Macbeth has never seen an adaption like the one the Year 12 WACE Drama class presented to a small but appreciative audience on Tuesday night. Set in an American southern states hairdressing salon, Madigan Spooner, Indiya Webb and Emily Wood took the three witches’ scene to new heights as they turned a trip to their favourite hairdressing salon into an eerie, spine-chilling witches’ covenant - chanting their apparitions regarding Macbeth’s future, around the hot-wax hair-removal pot! They each gave very impressive performances. Tom Principe, as Macbeth, found out more than he bargained for from his three clients. He delivered his soulful soliloquy from atop a ladder with strobe lights flashing and gave a very powerful delivery. The Year 10 Drama students performed a delightful selection of comic melodramas and monologues in the Italian theatre style of Commedia del arte, which was enhanced by two of our Italian exchange students, Giulia and Marta. The Year 8 boys who attended and performed their narrative mime also did a wonderful job. Thanks to Mr Crossie, Ryan Avery and Mr Watts for their help with this wonderful evening showcasing some of the exciting performing arts happening at GMAS. Mrs Susan Thompson Drama Teacher

Busselton City to Surf This coming weekend Sunday 16th August from 8am GMAS has 45 students, staff and parents participating in the event on the Busselton foreshore. School captains on race day (your helpers) will be Mr Greg and Mrs Julia McDonald. Look out for them under the GMAS school flags at the marquee (where you can meet after you have collected your number and leave your gear) in the school alley on the day. Can all participants please wear their GMAS sport or staff shirts so you can identify each other. Trackstars Program On Wednesday 12th August, the Year 4, 5 and 6 Physical Education classes welcomed Thomas Bruins and Marc See from Front Runner Sports Coaching in Perth. Thomas and Marc spent the day with the students running a Trackstars program which included working on the principles of running technique, pacing, stretches and having fun whilst helping them to prepare for the Busselton City to Surf and their upcoming athletics carnival. Thomas is a Front Runner coaching consultant and development coach and Marc, a Physiotherapist and the State 1500m Champion who recently won the 12km Albany City to Surf. The students thoroughly enjoyed spending their Physical Education classes with Thomas and Marc and this was made possible by an Australian Sports Commission Sporting Schools Grant. Mihai Mandache – GMAS Swimming Coach One week into his new position as GMAS Swimming Coach, and Mihai Mandache, 1980 Olympian, already knows GMAS has talent! Mihai who hails from Romania, started swimming at the young age of seven. He was scared of the water and didn’t have a pool yet was still very successful at local competitions in those early years. Mihai says that when he won his first medal and it was placed around his neck, he wanted fame and to represent his family and to have a long and prosperous future in swimming. That very first medal was hung on his Dad’s wall and took pride of place. After competing and winning many international and university competitions, Mihai was selected in 1980 at 19 years of ages, to represent Romania at the Moscow Olympics, securing his position by specialising in backstroke. Unfortunately he wasn’t presented with a medal but is extremely proud to have had the opportunity. By 1985 Mihai was coaching and had stopped swimming competitively. He had graduated from the Romanian Sports Academy and Turkey employed him as their National Swimming Coach. Mihai later moved to New Zealand as a Performance Swimming Coach. Mihai is already enjoying the WA lifestyle and has many plans for the GMAS Swimming Team. In the future he would like to implement staff swimming classes and would love GMAS to have its very own swimming pool. He is keen to promote our Club and wants our students to have as many opportunities as possible. He is reaching for the stars and wants our Club to be the best not only in WA but in Australia! This week, I asked some of our students what they enjoyed most about Australia and what they found a bit unusual.

The students have been wonderful to talk to, watch out for the next update! Mrs Justine Richmond Coordinator

Luca and his host family visited Broome. He loved surfing, sunsets and the camel ride.

Giulia attended BUZ camp and she thought this was great. She has also visited the Busselton Jetty to go fishing and watched the beautiful sunset.

Ilaria found that in Australia you are able to do what you want to do without fear of getting hurt. She also enjoyed being so involved with nature. What she found funny was that we let our hair dry naturally! And she isn’t too keen on the spiders!

Marta found it unusual how we ate dinner on the sofa instead of at the table. But she did like many of our Australian foods.

Week theme – ‘Books Light Up Our World’.
