Mayor Peter Koetsier presented Perry with his 20 years of service certificate at Council on Februrary 11. During the presentation, Perry advised the Mayor:

“Your Worship, I will continue to work here with integrity, honour and commitment, as I have for the last 20 years”.

You might recognize Perry as he was an actor in the movie Porcupine Lake filmed here in Port Severn. Outside of Perry’s normal hours, staff have witnessed many heartfelt acts of charity and good will, including car detailing to raise funds for the local food bank.

Thank you Perry for the last 20 years.

92 acres of wildlife habitat protected at Ingram Biodiversity Reserve

Honey Harbour’s wildlife has a reason to celebrate: 92 acres of prime wetland, forest, and rock barren habitat is protected forever thanks to the vision and generosi-ty of a local landowner.

The new Ingram Biodiversity Reserve is situated just o Honey Harbour Road, about halfway between Honey Harbour and Port Severn. Home to a Provincially Signicant Wetland and dozens of animal species, it is a signicant conservation achievement for the area and a huge win for regional biodiversity.

Jay Ingram, (in photo above to the left) a science writer and former host of Daily Planet and CBC’s Quirks and Quarks, is the owner of the newly

protected area. He chose to place a Conservation Easement on his property through the Georgian Bay Land Trust to ensure that its impressive ecologi-cal features remain intact forever, even if the land is sold or inherited by future generations. Although the property remains privately owned, the Land Trust is responsi-ble for long-term monitoring and co-stewardship of the protected habitat. Ingram says, “it is a beauti-ful landscape, and I’m delighted that it will remain that way.”

Sheltered from severe weather coming in from open water, the Ingram Biodiversity Reserve nonetheless has many attributes in common with coastal Georgian Bay. The treed portions of the interior are predominantly mixed conifer and deciduous forest interspersed with acidic and shrubbed rock barrens. There are several healthy wetlands on the property, including a large marsh at the northern end that has been designated a Provincially Signi-cant Wetland (PSW). Although the immediate area to Ingram is known to contain the “transition zone” from northern Precambrian Shield to southern moraine, the Ingram property is rmly on the Shield.

    The property provides habitat for

seven documented species at risk which were all sighted on the proper-ty during the baseline visit. Three specimens of Five-lined Skink, an Eastern Ribbonsnake, Blanding’s Turtle, Snapping Turtle, and Mon-arch Buttery. Eastern Massasau-ga and Eastern Whip-poor-will have also been conrmed on the property by Ingram.

There has been a great deal of recreational development take place in the Honey Harbour/Port Severn area, and the remaining undeveloped properties are under pressure. In consideration of its diversity and habitat for docu-mented at-risk species, setting aside the vacant portion of the Ingram property as a Conservation Easement will provide a home for wildlife in this increasingly busy area, will add to existing local protected spaces, and will connect conservation “corridors” in all directions, a critical provision for the seasonal movement of wildlife.

Jay Ingram is to be commended for his conservation-mindedness and his generous gift to the Honey Harbour community. Thank you Jay!
