Georgia War COVID-19 Update

We are now in the third month of our efforts to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19 in our facility and our goal today remains the same: continue our preventative measures to ensure the safety of all staff and residents. We have undergone some testing of both groups and we are happy to report they have all been negative. We understand the current restrictions in place have been taxing and burdensome, and we could not have gotten this far without your commitment and cooperation. As we navigate through this ever-changing environment at home, work, and in our communities, we know that none of the freedoms we have today would be possible without the valor and courage of those who chose to defend this great nation. These are the veteran residents that reside in our facility and our communities today. Thank you to all of our residents, staff, and families for your continued efforts and flexibility in this ever changing environment. It’s certainly not an ideal situation, and we are doing all that we can to ensure the health and safety of everyone under the Georgia War umbrella. From handwashing to use of masks and social distancing, we continue to focus on our infection prevention practices at home, work, and in the community. Essential to our mission, I am proud to say that all of our departments have stepped up in one way or another to ensure that medical care, therapies, and ancillary support services continue. Volunteering to help in ways we never imagined, staff have stepped up regardless of role or job title. They have remained steadfast and intact which confirms a true commitment to our mission, and ensuring that we continue in a way that represents business as usual even though we know it is not. Everyone should be commended for their commitment to this organization. As you have experienced first-hand, this pandemic has led to new medical challenges, policies, and procedures, and we continue to remain vigilant in an effort to maintain a safe and healthy environment. Considering the restrictions, use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and demands of new protocols occurring every week, you have made it possible to stay ahead of the curve. Please know that our leadership team continues working with federal, state, and local government agencies in support of our mission. We have also experienced an amazing outpouring of support from individuals and community partners. On the next page, there is a full list of those who have provided Georgia war with Masks, PPE, Food, and other support during this time. These groups remain committed and will continue to support Georgia War through this pandemic. We are very fortunate and thankful for their partnership. Late last month, restrictions in Georgia were scaled back and we want you to be aware that Georgia War restrictions are anticipated to extend at least through May. Please be assured that our approach to reopening will be deliberate and systematic. We remain cautious in an effort to maintain as healthy of an environment as possible. We hope that you and your family will remain safe at home and in your community as we continue to fight this pandemic. Any questions or concerns can be directed to Administration. Thank you for your commitment and ongoing efforts in support of keeping Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home safe and healthy. Carlton Deese Executive Director

Chaplain’s Corner

As a Veteran, I realize how crucial it is to always remember the brave men and women who died while serving our country. It is because of their sacrifice that we enjoy some of the freedoms and liberties that we sometimes take for granted. In May, we set aside time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. We now call it Memorial Day, but it was once known as Decoration Day! This American holiday is observed the last Monday in May. Memorial Day is not just a day off from work or school for many people; it is a significant day to reminisce about friends and family who have died while serving in the U.S. Military. We remember the Veterans who died as the backbone of this country. Without them, there would be no United States of America. No Life, no Liberty, and no Pursuit of Happiness. Also, there would not be a way to ensure that our country will continue to be the “Land of Opportunity” it is known to be. I thank God for our fallen Veterans who protected our rights as Americans and made the dreams of our forefathers possible. Here is a Poem by Rabbi Sylvan Kamens and Rabbi Jack Riemer that reminds me to remember those who served with their lives at all times. A Litany of Remembrance 1

In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them. In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them. In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them. In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them. In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them. When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them. So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us as we remember them. As I remember them, I recall in the sacred scripture “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (St. John 15:13). There is no higher expression of love than to give up your very life and to be willing to leave family and friends behind. To the many brave heroes who have gone before, thank you for your sacrifice of love. I am grateful to those veterans who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. You will never be forgotten, and we, as citizens, will forever be indebted to you. Just as you have shaped our history, you will shape our future.

Blessings to all, Chaplain Timothy E. Lark

Step 1: Pre-Heat your oven to 400 degrees.

Step 2: Rinse mushrooms thoroughly until all dirt is removed. Set aside on a paper towel to

drain.

Step 3: Place a sleeve of crackers in a zip lock bag and crush into a fairly fine crumb. Pour

the crumbs into a medium size mixing bowl.

Step 4: Shred the sharp cheddar cheese into the cracker crumb bowl. About half a block.

Step 5: Using your hands combine the shredded sharp cheddar cheese and crackers

crumbs. Really get in there and squeeze them together. Once thoroughly mixed, the

combination should just hold its shape when squeezed. If it does not hold its shape add

more cheese. If it feels like silly putty add more cracker crumbs.)

Step 6: Place your mushrooms on a backing sheet stem side up. Fill the cavity of each

mushroom with the cheese/cracker mixture. Pack it in there good but don't split you

mushrooms. The mixture should mound a little above the mushroom.

Step 7: Once all mushrooms are filled it’s time to whip out the bacon. Cut your bacon strips

into squares just large enough to cover the filled mushroom.

Step 8: Place your stuffed mushrooms into the oven and bake until the bacon is cooked to

your liking. The bacon fat will cook down into the mushroom and add lots of flavor and

moisture.

Step 9: Let cool and enjoy!

Mother’s Day Puzzles

Complete the phrase on the board. The letters of the phrase on the board fell on the ground. You have to put the letters back on the board in the correct order. Luckily

the letters fell directly under the column as they were on the board.

Good Luck!

Let Me Go Christina Rossetti

When I come to the end of the road

And the sun has set for me I want no rites in a gloom filled room

Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not for long And not with your head bowed low

Remember the love that once we shared Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take

And each must go alone. It's all part of the master plan A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart

Go to the friends we know. Laugh at all the things we used to do

Miss me, but let me go.
