1st Quarter 2015 Report

B. Six members have recently renewed, but they don’t yet show up on the “paid” list. One associate member will not renew, due to other commitments. One member has moved and cannot be located, and 3 members have not responded to attempts to contact them. One member is actively battling cancer, and we are not bothering him with renewal notices at this time. We also have a member who died several months ago, and for whom the appropriate documentation was sent, who still is showing up on the roster.

C. Recruiting and Retention

Detachment members are making personal contact with everyone we see wearing Marine apparel, or displaying Marine stickers and license plates. We invite them to our meetings and events, and pass out our business cards. Several of us are members of the North Georgia Honor Guard, and we are often approached at funerals and other veterans’ events by Marines of all ages.

Members are encouraged to renew their memberships early because of the length of timeit takes to process their renewals. Efforts to make meetings more interesting and desirable are ongoing.

D. Delinquent MembersThree of our delinquent members have not responded to our efforts to contact them. One member on our delinquent list have indicated that she will not renew. We suspect one of the members on the delinquent has died, but so far we have been unable to confirm that. We are awaiting replies from the others.

Detachment activities during last quarterSeven of our members are members of the North Georgia Honor Guard, which has been active providing honors at funerals and other ceremonies. We also held a special event this year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, with three veterans of that battle in attendance.

RECRUITING AND RETENTION:

This is still the biggest problem we have as a detachment and it is further exacerbated by our inability to get a member to serve as Junior Vice Commandant. The Junior Past Commandant and myself will have to lead the effort by doing what we can to convince all our members to play an active role in the recruiting effort. I firmly believe that if we can get prospects to visit with us for one meeting, we will succeed in getting them to become a member.

We are doing somewhat better in the retention area by attempting to have interesting programs that our members want to participate in. Attendance has averaged around 21 at meetings, but we’d still like to see it somewhat higher.

We still urge all our members to do their part in recruiting and we use many of the methods that I see other detachments use. We try to be as visible as we possibly can so that the community can’t say that they’ve never heard of the detachment.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:

Chuck Feaselman, our Junior Past Commandant and holder of the Georgia Department’s MOY,

distributed Good Citizenship Certificates to 28 Eagle Scouts at their Courts of Honor ceremonies during the quarter. I hope that every detachment has at least one member who is willing to devote as much time to the various projects as Chuck does. It certainly makes it much easier on the commandant and other officers. Our challenge is to find other members who are willing to move up the ranks as the older ones complete their terms .
